Title: Official LGM Jam #2
Post by: jlynnb1 on August 31, 2007, 11:21:04 AM
Ok guys, here's some tracks to choose from. Let's try and choose by MOnday if possible, that way we can get going on it!!

Would love to see more of you get involved, it was fun seeing how guys approached the last track. Let's use this to learn from one another!!

I like the "Funk Track," personally. I think we can all do a lot of branching out on that one. Even get into some effects, maybe... (I don't know "wah" I'd use on that one lol...)

Jam Track 54 wouldn't play. I just got digital noise (R2D2 on speed).

So, unless Jam Track 54 is killer, my vote's on Funk Track.

i'll see what's up with that one track, but I don't know that it's a mind-blower or anything.

Yeah, it seems like the last week no one's been on here...

C'mon folks, I'm needy, I need social stimulation lol (I'm kidding, btw)...

Hopefully they roll in. It's a busy weekend for a lot of folks.

yeah, i hope so, i'd really like for everyone to be involved. if there were any gospel backing tracks out there we could do some, but they just don't exist. and most of the midi's aren't very good. if it's a style thing, someone speak up, we'll try to figure something out.

Dave,
That was real cool. What software/hardware products did you use to lay down and mix those tracks? I like the mix.

On another forum I belong to, we do a monthly jam and whomever wants to participate, does and does so at their own pace through the month.
Maybe that's a plan for us as well?

i'm up for whatever would have people involved. a month seems a little long to me, maybe every 2 weeks or so....but seriousy, if a month would get people involved i'm up for it.

i guess my thing is i'd just like to get some input from the guys around here, some involvement.

Yes, feedback can help all of us. One thing we on the other forum have is a mutual trust/respect for each other and we're open to both give and receive constructive criticism without offense. Several of the players are very grateful to have the criticism as they don't have the luxury of having a teacher to give them feedback on their playing and their progress.

I've no doubt that the same could help all of us here, too.  8)

Dave, could you share the name of this other forum with us?
Thanks,

It's called Cyberjammin. It's made up of primarily former members of Harmony Central's Veterans forum from several years ago...now called Cool Jam.
Cyberjammin is an invitation-only forum, it's fairly heavily non-Christian and made up of players from hacks to pros, many of them using the forum as more of a social medium than a musical one...which is typical of most forums I know of.

the bible does say that "iron sharpeneth iron"....

another set of ears will always hear something you can't.....it's not always easy to hear constructive criticism, but it's essential to develeloping as a musician. i know it was a great help to me to have strong mentors that would tell me if something i was doing didn't sound good or needed to be different.

Unfortunately, some people have a hard time getting their criticism into a constructive form... It's honestly easier to take const. crit. than it is to give it.

But, like stated above, if we all give the benefit of the doubt, and take what is said into a peaceful consideration... that would be great.

I know I can handle it.

You would think on a Christian forum this would be easier, but... well, we won't dig stuff up, but I've seen people on here come "this close" to unlacing the gloves...

I'm sure we're all better now, right, folks?

How's this going for everybody?

I'm not gonna' lie, I'm having a hard time with it... and I voted for it! lol. I think it's the long change to E... I run out of stuff and meander off, then I lose my focus.

I'm going to chalk it up to an "off day." and try again later...

When was that deadline? lol

I'm gonna' take a vitamin tomorrow and hit this again.

on the song page on soundclick, there should be a link for you to download the MP3 without having to laucnh the song player. there are a couple of links with each song, such as "hifi" "lofi" and "download", if i remember correctly. you might try that, even though i'll still see about getting it hosted.

For this one we're doing the "funk track" (not the Funky BT...).

Currently, I'm stuck lol. I hope to work on it more tomorrow.

We've been trying to get more folks into this, I think we had about 5 for the 1st one, and only 3 for this one.

GET IN HERE FOLKS! It's not a competition, it's so we can feed off of each other, and maybe be able to give suggestions that would elevate our playing.

Besides, the dudes (and ladies) on here are gonna be a better ruler for your talent that your spouse lol.  ;)

Jam for the growth of His glorification.

That's the unofficial slogan I just made up lol.

i just can't get the time to throw anything down, lol. God has been really blessing me, I've gotten so many calls in the last 2 weeks to play for people or do session work it's crazy. I've got 3 out of state gigs to learn stuff for, some things i'm leading worship at here, and at least 2, maybe 3 full-length cd recording sessions coming up....not to mention I'm about to be full-time staff at my church taking over as student-pastor/technical arts director while remaining in charge of the band.

I'm thankful the Lord's blessing me, but I just want 30 minutes to lay something down on this thing, lol.

That is AWESOME! It's a total blessing to be able to indulge in what you love for not only your worship, but for some income as well.

I'd be really interested in hearing the CD project when it's released. Keep us posted.

And, as always, if you know anyone that needs a crazy, semi-sloppy, quasi-Wylde-ish lead player...  ;)

it is a blessing, and it's alot of fun. the session stuff is such a different animal. learning stuff for church or for other people to play live, you have a template there already, and you can either play it the same or make it your own, but the idea is still there......doing it from scratch it;s all on you to be creative, and to turn the producer/artists ideas and constructive criticism into something cool....it can be a challenge, lol. especially when you what in your head sounds cool but they want to go in a different direction.

anyway, i'm not complaining at all, but it is  an interesting challenge.

Dave, I think it's your take that's throwing me off lol.

My creative gland is all "What am I supposed to do now?!?"

And then I'm all "I don't know, creative gland, we'll think of something."

And then creative gland's all "Well, you're on your own, hot shot, cause I'm out of here!"

And I'm all, "But I love you, I'm sorry..."

The creative gland slams the door--he didn't even take a sweatshirt with him...

Then I cry for a minute, try to play guitar, and occasionally--only occasionally--I'll take forum posts WAY TOO FAR. LOL  :P

My bad. It's been an odd day.

Did you hit your head or something?  ;D

I was told by my mother that when I was a young child, I use to play Superman off of the couch--once resulting in three stitches in my lower lip...

Not sure if that has anything to do with my quirkiness today or not lol.

Have I hit my head recently? Not that I recall... I get swung at occasionally by the wife, but those are usually chest and stomach blows (I'm KIDDING).

I still haven't got this together yet--my weekend turned out a ton different that planned, free time went to car maintenance, etc.

Hopefully get it done in the next day or so.

Oh, and Dave... your enclosure has been hand painted, cleared, and awaits labeling... I've got a few shipments I'm waiting on, and it'll be under the iron.

You want teaser shots, or are you a suspense fan?

jlynnb1, yours is next. I didn't want two projects going at once.

Dave, it's no problem. I will let you know as soon as it's fired up, and get some sound clips for you if possible.

I'm still waiting on a few parts I didn't have "in stock," but then I'll have it done within a day or so of that.

So... here's my submission. I might do something else with it, but I was having such a hard time the other day, I think this is it.

I had to put new strings on the Tele--and even whipped out the good mic--for inspiration.

I'm pleased with my tone, but there are a few bugs in the playing: a few off-time things, one or two goofs.

I threw that little slap guitar thing in there because I'm always fooling around with it, but never use it (a while ago there was a post about playing with your fingers, and the difference in speed... listen to that first change to E, that's all picked with my fingers  :P lol ).

I did break my one rule about recording, though... and I ask for your forgiveness ahead of time... I overdubbed a lick--just one, that's all.

It was way off time, and I really liked the rest of the cut. Sorry.

This was all one take (minus the one lick), and I think it was the 2nd one.

Let's see what y'all came up with. I'm getting antsy now lol.

you overdubbed?!?! oh the shame, i'm reporting you to the elders, lol.....

nice take man.....was that your tele?? for whatever reason it didn't sound like one to me. sounded great, just didn't sound "tele-ish". Always enjoy hearing your stuff man.

Now i have to come up with something....i think i might use my semi hollow.....we'll see, lol.
Title: Re: Official LGM Jam #2
Post by: JayP5150 on September 17, 2007, 04:37:39 PM
Yeah, that was the Tele. It has a SD Lil' 59 in the bridge, but that neck pickup I started on was stock. I'll never change that--I love that tone.

I do eventually want to wire in a second on and be able to switch it in and out (reverse wound), so I will have stock Tele neck p/u, and big-ol-fat neck p/u. I can't even fathom what two Tele neck p/u's as a humbucker would sound like. But we're talking a giant mod (and I don't own a router lol).

I appreciate the compliment, man. I was hoping to do more with it, but there it is, I guess.

the biggest problem i have with this track is that i want to do more with it than it lets me....i want to build a little melody/motif over the first pass and then expand on it, but there is no time because you are twice through it and done.....

ctrl-c, ctrl-v, my man lol. (I guess it's "command" if you're on a Mac  ;) )

Copy and paste.

I had to extend that last one we did because I forgot to stop playing, so I tacked on a few seconds, and faded 'er out.

Ha, I was simply having a hard time with this--now listen to jlynnb1; "I'm having a hard time because there's just not enough space for me to even begin to stretch my musical legs." lol

I am totally just kidding with you. I understand what you're saying. I think that's why mine was kinda all out from the go. Something will hit you. And I'm sure I'll be blown away by it.

And I'm sure I'll be blown away by it.

lol, nah, it just feels like it needs some structure to play off of, and there isn't much time to develop it...i think it's because it's just kind of repetite musically, so i'm trying to make it more interesting, lol. we'll see what happens.....i had a cool idea for it but it didn't quite work, the song was a little slow for what i wanted to try....

How hypocritical did I sound by telling you to hack up the track after whining that I overdubbed one lick? lol

I just realized that.

As for the speed... speed it up (I'm kidding!).

Looking forward to whatever you've got in store.

Where is everyone else?

All in good fun, guys.

Oh, I knew you were joking, but you might be right. lol

I hope they all know we're kidding.

You know, there was this dude in high school that made it his personal agenda to--at least once a day--tell me that Clapton had died.

It would be before 1st period, and I'd be walking down the hall (possibly clutching my copy of Clapton's biography "Crossroads" by Michael Schumacher), and I would hear--from all the way down the hall--"DUDE!!! Jay!!! Did you see the news? Clapton died last night!!!! It's crazy."

Of course, I had to defend the fact that Eric was still with us lol. It would go back and forth for a few minutes.

Oh, and there were the times that my friends insisted on trying to convince me that my Tele was a re-labeled Mexican--not an Am. Std. at all...  >:(

Jealousy... psh.

I hope we're not "that guy" lol.

Thanks about the avatar. That was from my dad's annual Labor Day cookout/jam session. It was a grainy pic, so I just antiqued it lol.

Thought it was time for a change, and I think it's one of the very few pics of me playing slide.

I put a pic of my "live" setup on my myspace, too. Check it out.

BTW, back on topic... did you listen to my clip lilbb? It's a few posts up.

I wish we all had the time to dore more of that type of stuff (and, um, that everyone would get involved).

Don't be shy, folks, we are all mature musicians here. No one's going to throw stones, etc.

I'm going to download photoshop just so I can stick Prince's head on my body lol.

No, better yet... my head on his. I'd look good in a purple body suit. It would match my car.

lilBB... the pic was necessary. It's funnier that way.

I had that as my avatar for a while, but I don't think anyone got the humor in it, so I changed it lol.

Although, I do have a friend that calls me "yogurt raisin"... think about it.  ;)

jlynnb1... I thought that's what we were doing... I need to redo mine then. I'm kidding. That's all I had to fit that. I got something on tape that was almost cohesive and I was like "done!" I'll def. check later for it.

Ok, here is my oh so sloppy take. Has its moments, but was defnitely hoping for more, lol. I shouldn't have used so much delay, i had a cool idea for it but the song was a little slow for it to have the effect that i wanted. oh well, at least we powered through this one,  ;D.

it's obviously the one title, LGM Jam #2.

thanks man, i appreciate it. it has it's moments i'm pleased with, quite a few i'm not, lol. my timing was a little suspect in parts...and that semi-hollow wasn't really made to shred on, lol. overall i can live with it though.....i definitely appreciate the kind words...

Good take, man. That tone is killer. It's creamy, but still very defined and clear. That's a hard one to nail.

I've said it before, but anytime I listen to you or Dave, I realize how much how much I need to work on SOME SORT OF melodic structure in my playing lol.

Sorry it took so long to listen to this. It's daughter weekend; don't get to check my messages much. Also, her birthday was Wednesday (she's 2), and we had the party on Saturday, so I wasn't home at all yesterday.

thanks jay, i appreciate man. that semi-hollow sounds surprisingly good with gain. it's got that warmth that you mentioned, but it cuts like no other. i played my eclipse for the first song at church today then switched to the semi, man it was like night and day. it's just such a versatile guitar. i might try to record another take with a different guitar just for fun.

i guess that's all the tracks we can expect, so we need to start selecting a new track. if ANYONE has a track or song they'd like us to tackle, please share. I REALLY want this to be something we all take part in.

Guys, should we start a post that compiles all of our cuts?

yeah, that might be cool. it also might be a good idea to have a seperate thread for all tracks from now on, might make it easier for everyone to hear the different takes. it would be ALOT easier if one of us had mod priveleges so we could edit the original post in the "tracks" thread and just add each new track in that first post.

just took care of it....it would really be nice if we could sticky things....I just pm'd a mod about it.

come on guys, lets get some more submissions here....gibby, track man, bb, uriah, rown......anybody, let's hear it.

also, i'll be adding some new backing tracks to the soundclick page later so we can get going on the next one. again, if anyone has any suggestions/requests, please share....i really want this to be something we are ALL involved in and can ALL benefit from.

Good deal.

I need to get my green stars lol, I don't even have edit capabilities.

It's on the list, but as everyone knows right now, the mortgage biz is a bit snug right now (I'm a closer for a title agency).
