Title: Solo performance
Post by: Hotsticks1 on September 23, 2007, 09:42:31 PM
Wasup guys, I have a performance coming up that I've really been thinking about heavily. It's going to be a solo deal in front of about 1000 people in my highschool gym, and I wanted to hear some opinions about how ya'll think I should do this...

1. I could do a straight drum solo and end with something big, just showing off what all I can do

2. I can play to a track or maybe put a couple together to get people up out of their seats and dancin

so whatchall think?

Personally, I find number 1 to be the harder option so I would choose that to push myself to try and pull it off & particularly in a pressured situation like that (big crowd etc) makes it even more harder (Note: I'm a fan of the iron sharpens iron school of thought).

Also, are they a musical crowd? That's another factor... no point in trying to do a straight drum solo if there isn't an audience to appreciate it.

Otherwise just do the lollipop stuff that gets peoples toes tapping (Afro-cuban type drumming always gets people toe tapping & head bobbing).

That's a good point

But that's another good point too...

HhhhhmmmI really gotta think this one through. Personally I think they're musical (as in they know every song on the radio) but when it comes down to real instrumental stuff I think they just see someone going crazy on drums, and not actually feeling the musicality in the solo

Play from your heart.  Let the moment dictate what you play.

Track option 1If you have some production skills, I'd make a track that feels like a live concert. You know with all the orchestra hits and stuff.

Track Option 2 Do a medley of popular songs (Although...the "hype"ness that may occur from your peers hearing their favorite songs may detract from your performance  :( )

Solo Option
GROOVE A LOT!!!! lol Oh yeah and do some fast single stroke rolls around the toms. Non-drummers like those lol  :P

BTW this was a pretty cool solo I saw recently. http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=18035007

Lol...............(you already know why I'm laughin).  Dude just rip.  Do whatever you feel like.  Put it like this: The crowd (or most of it) aint gonna notice the difference between you hittin a solo or groovin to a track.  I mean dont wild out or nothin but let em know that you reppin that LW sound BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make their heads bob and necks break FIRST then hit your solo and nd it big. Do not got past 3-4 mins overall because they will loose interest. Keep he solo musical and related to the track so that the crowd has a eference point. That way the feed bak you get will be more relative and honest.

Man I would just get a couple of current tracks that are "Hot" in there eyes. Mix them up and rock off. You gotta remember alot of them aren't like us. They don't look for certain things. Soon as you start doing a chop they like "OHHHHHHHH". Doesn't take much to please them... ya dig?

HAHAHAHAHAHA....Man I see that everytime I go back home. I don't care what time I arrive at the bus terminal. It's somebody banging on drums or homemade drums.

Thats another valid point, so your saying give them a lil taste of both...I respect that
