you know what I noticed though... Is that even some professional gospel musicians can't play in every key..... I was listening to Presence of the Lord by Byron Cage and I noticed that the song kept going up half steps, until it got to the key of Eb... I was thinking to myself, "I bet you won't modulate to E natural (which is a hard key to play in for many gospel organists).... and sho' nuff, they skipped that key and went straight to F!!!! (I wonder why???)...

I've heard several songs that skip keys like D,E,A, and B... alot of songs skip from Bb to C and from Db to Eb and so on....

You're absolutely correct. I noticed that too, but I didn't try to connect it together.

You're exactly right....that's why those musicians need to come to LGM so they can learn from people who are masters of every key. ;) My goal is that I will know how to play something in every key by the end of this year. I just started really learning to play progressions in every key in July and I am determined to be more than just an average musician. Please pray 4 me because it gets frustrating at times but I ain't gone quit though  ;D

I've been "playing" for almost 20 years. I didn't get serious until 5 years ago.

For some reason, G is harder for me now than B.

I remember when I could play in most other keys, but could only play basic chords in C and G.  Other musicians would say playing in C and G was easy...but (I guess for that reason) I didn't take the time to transpose what I knew in other keys to those keys.  I think one problem with musicians playing in D, E, A, etc., sharrp keys is relative to sharps or flats...at least for those who also read music.  I feel more comfortable reading or dealing with music in flat keys, rather than sharp keys...I just don't like reading music in sharp keys and I guess it rolls over even when I'm playing by ear.

Even though I can play in all keys now...I still prefer playing in flat keys rather than sharp keys.

I've noticed that for a loooonnngggg time.  Like on the new Marvin Sapp CD, on that song "Shout Unto God", the song ends in the key of A, but then whoever was playing modulated back down to Ab.  I was like "What da ham sammich?", I guess A wasn't his key, LOL.

That's what I've been told too. I am a geek though so, I decided to write down a song that I know that's easy to me and then I transposed it on paper until I had it written out in every key. Then I went to the keyboard and started to play it in what I call my "trouble keys"....now I am atleast able to play something in every key. I am trying to do that on simple songs first and then I'll go up the food chain.. ;) ;) Everyone calls me a geek for doing this but if you want something bad enough, you'll do whatcha gotta do to get it.....can I get a AMEN!! ;D **runs to the organ to hit that Bb shout**

I agree that people r tired of the same ole same ole....I just wish I could play better in those keys. I do ok in the key of B but not in shouting music though  :-[ For some reason shouting music has puzzled me...

Does anyone play shouting music in the keys of B, E, F, or A...??

There are some licks and runs that I can do in other keys but those particular keys give me a very hard time. I'm confident though that with more practice using those keys, that I'll eventually get better. ;)

If we all want to master this craft that we have been bleesed to learn and use for the glorifcation of GOD.  Lets all go back to the basics.  Pick up that sheet music and learn to read all over again.  I have been playing for some 20+ years and I find it very benificial when I can sit down and tackle a hard classical peice and then transform it to a fabulous gospel.  That is truely the way to be versitile and learn all the keys.  Think of your ochestra's as a lead keyboardist you read a dirctors copy and every instrument on their has different instramentation so you get a lot reading done in just a short session.  Sit down and site read in all these different keys and you as well as I will learn to master them to his pleasure.

TheBig listed letter names of tones in the minors in NATURAL minor, which agrees with the key signature and shares the pitch vocabulary of the relative major. Or in syllable terms (solfeg), majors go do re mi fa sol la ti do, and minors go la ti do re mi fa sol la.

But the minor used by far the most is HARMONIC. It's seventh tone is raised a half tone orf half step, making it closer to the top or upper tonic, and creating that "snake-charmer" gap between the sixth and seventh tone, and of course (this is why it is called harmonic) giving us a MAJOR DOMINANT chord!

So, for example, the pitches in C minor would be C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B, C.

Try learning the progressionso of the songs rather than learning a whole song.  With progressions, they can be transposed rather easily into other keys.  I am not saying it will be a 5 minute process (unless you really are good at transposing that quickly) but it does help when you have a limited time to learn a song.

If you know how far the next chord is from the previous one and its tonality, you can zoom through transpositions and modulations with ease (once you practice at it)
