Title: Getting Fired????????
Post by: earlk on October 31, 2007, 08:17:07 AM
Hey Lgm whatsup?

I wanna know has anyone been fired from a gig or know some1 who has been fired before?
Cos i see sometimes drummers with an artist and then next recording you find someone else in the drummer seat.....how do they tell someone that we got someone else to play it seems cold in the gospel scene doesnt it?

example "chris coleman for new breed another level" and then big mike for everything else.....

let me know

peace

Sometimes a change is just a change.  When someone gets replaced it's not always because they've been fired.  Somtimes they just leave.  Creative differences, other opportunities, scheduling conflicts, etc.  Anything can happen.  Sometimes cats just get tired of playing with someone and want to move on.

...first of all, let me clarify this before the LGM Rumor Squad begin making phone calls....

Chris Coleman DID NOT GET FIRED FROM NEW BREED!!!  He left New Breed on HIS OWN TERMS!!!!

...now that that's out of the way....it all has to do with Producers and what they want.  You can get fired by not doing what is asked of you or not being a team player or just plain old talking junk about the band on your myspace page.

...Now, this is Music Business sooo, if they want you to play for a Recording: A. Play  B. Pick up your check.  C. Move on to the next thing.  D. Make sure you get your check. LOL

Somebody did that?

It can be a number of reason like J said.

Honestly, as I start to venture out into my song writing and producing. I wouldn't say I fired anybody because at some point I would use them again. When I right songs I am looking for a certain sound. So I am going to use the musician that provides the best sound for what I am looking for.

Now if I fire you it was for a reason....Music can go from rec to biz...Some people cant handle the pressure that comes with the biz so they stay doing it for fun.

not to start any rummors  ;D wouldnt like to do that but i read an article in i think sabian magazine sometime ago and it explained that John Parris (EWF) was FIRED from previous gigs becos he couldnt play shining star and then ends up being their (EWF)drummer. That is an amazing come back wouldnt you say  :)

I understand the bussiness side of music .....but i have been shown away from like church choir gigs before and man church "brothers" made a meal of saying we dont need you we got "such and such" to play cos he can play that better than you can.

and then this is me  :'(  :'(  :'(   :'(  :'(  :'(   :'(   >:(  >:(  >:(  ?/?   ?/?  ?/? ?/? why lord why  :'(  :'(  :'(   :'(

but you know i picked myself up and started doing more rudiments and stuff and it wasnt long before i was a bit more fluent.....but that experience both hurt me  :'( and taught me alot about not giving up and staying humble.....

I remember getting fired from a church because I wouldn't wear a tie. This church was old and set in thier ways. I came their because my boy had gotten the MOM gig there and wanted to bring in some up to date musicians there.....They wound up firing him because he wore a sweater one Sunday. A....When I witnessed how badd they treated him because he was young with some great ideas, and how badd they treated the entire band he brought in, I wore one as well. I got a warning from the head Deacon. The next Sunday I wore another one on purpose....The next thing I know. I got a letter in the mail and a check...LOL

"It is with great regret......"

I was like YES!!! finanally it's over....

These churches trip me out...

I got the boot becos i wasnt "keeping up" to the choir masters standard of drumming. You know like i said they told me "such and such" can play it better than you so you got to go!!!! The problem they saw was that my drumming wasnt exciting enufff like with chops and licks and stuff...i nailed the timing i know i did becos i would play along to the origanal record. and i nailed the timing and played what i had to play and all i could play. like i said i think they werent excited by the disciplined playing

but the manner in which they let me go was boderline demonic man LOL

its true what fred says "sometimes in the body of christ we mean and then prophecy on top of all that meaness"

Well man just continue to stay disciplined. Sometimes small time choirs want you to "WoW" them but big time choirs want discipline.

...man, if another hott drummer was to come to my church I would be out of the Lead Chair too.  The point is that you don't need to sit there bummed out.  What you need to do is continue to work out and get better.  In other words, ENTER THE WOODSHED. (The original.) LOL

...if they treated you disrespectfuly then that Choir either isn't for you or the M.D./M.O.M/Director etc. needs to learn Human Resources Skills or he gets the boot.

I agree with JFunky, If a hot drummer was to come to my church and replace me, that wouldn't be a bad thing. Sometimes you just need to sit back, listen, and ask questions. By doing this you will find out what makes them in demand. ME PERSONALLY, I know when certain drummers come to my church I let them, almost MAKE THEM play, so I can find out how to play different songs.

Personally, I think replacing a musician with the "Hot Musician" is a bad idea because they typically will not be there that long.

I was talking to someone the other day and they said that there chior did not have time to develop musicians because they are to good, I was like "That's why you haven't had a musicians for 3 years".

People tend to forget that "When I am weak, HE is strong".  You can still save souls without being the best.  Through out the bible GOD has always used the weak to do his bidding.

...whoa!!! The Big Boss is here. LOL

...okay, maybe I was in a hurry when I was typing and didn't really think things through......if there was a hott new drummer at my church, I wouldn't lose my Lead Chair cause there's still a process plus a "Trust Factor" but he would be very popular. :)

...I strongly agree that God puts up and takes down no matter who is the hottest sooooo, yeah....strong points "4"....I'm in agreeance. (sp?)

i jus wanted 2 say that just becuz u got chops dosent make u a undisciplined musician. musicians should have chops and technique....the discipline comes in when u know when and when not 2 use it. there are times when it is ok for u 2 strech on kit, and other times when u dont. sum songs do call 4 a bit more energy from the drummer.....

...it really doesn't have to be chops though.  In my case, the Lead drummer before me had crazy grooves and worked his fills around 'em.  That's what made that cat a strong force musically.  Actually, any drummer really.

...a lot of cats can play a 6/8 ballad.....but can they make it Swing?  That's a different story.  The nuances, the "feel"....etc.

....Ray Luzier (Pro Drummer) said in his clinic that he had to replace a drummer in the studio for a song that required to play a mean Shuffle.  The drummer didn't get fired because he is a member of the band but he did not get to play all of the tracks on his bands CD because his feel was not right for some songs.  So, to sum it up, it's not always a chops thing that can get you fired.

I remember in my mid teens i was playing at a church for couple years i went to music  school, learned how to read and write drum music. One Sunday night before church got started, one of the choir members relative/uncle came to church with the BASS PLAYER. I was asked to step aside and let him play, the church was pedominately West Indians, they love calypso and reggae. I played those styles of music, but i guess it wasn't good enough for them, i admit he was good with those styles. I sat there and watch him play and learn, after service he got alot of praise for his playing. I remember his neice coming to me and said that is my uncle. BOY!! >:( i was upset deep down, but it made me practice those styles harder. One night i played and that same drummer was there, and after service he came up to me and said that i am talented and better than him. Use every  disappointment as motivation

Yeah, although, its more disheartening when our lifestyle (ie church) does this to us.

With other musical styles & genres musicians CAN have their emo moments... We have to remain obedient, patient & compromising.

Now I've been in the game for a while now....but the thing i can't stand is when another cat comes to your church out the blue....and plays one song and the cats you play with are hollaring all over the place....and I'm watching as well not in anger but sometimes in awe, it's just that I'm not gonna run to the other side of the church and back like I got my first kiss from a girl or something...LOL but it bothers me sometimes cause they fail to recognize my committment and dedication, but those things don't make me go to the woodshed becuase the spirit then becomes an I'l show them spirit...which I don't allow myself to reduce to, I just keep working on the things that I feel I need....not them...

First of all Eric my man, let me drop acoule little diamonds on you fam, although I understand how you feel. But on some real talk for a min. If u r setting the bar high, strong, right, and musically confident (no matter who comes there to play) they will never be able to intimidate you because, you've already set the tone of the enviroment so no other man or woman can change it. And remember this "Everybody will always play different, more exciting, and possibly be more creative than the next guy " BUT! 9 x's out of 10 they're not playing with your people or playing the music you've rehersed with ur choir or praise team, they're probably playing some other music that they're choir or praise team is singing. So remember "Different Players fit Different Enviroments" and again you're probaly the perfect fit for your church and him for his church! And its always good to hear someone elses translation of the music every once in a while. Don't be moved by ur people (fellow band members or other musicians) screaming and yelling over the other drummer, scream and yell right along with them! Appreciate the difference in other people because eventually even they would get tired of hearing that all the time and then they'll be calling you back to come and play because they will miss the consistant sound and vibe you bring to the enviroment! It happens all the time homie trust me!!!! Let the "Show Boats" show! And you continue to show GOD! You want to please him with ur gift and not the crowd!!!!!!
Holla Fam! Stay encouraged!!!!

Hey whats up peoples?!! Ive been reading this site for a while and just now registered. First let me say that this site is great and a blessing to me. I feel like I know some of you personaly just by reading your post. EricT don't feel like the Lone Ranger dude. It can be tuff on musicians in the church. I kinda know where ya comin from but agree with the above post. We gotta acknowledge when someone is good or dare I say better than we are. I go through this alot. At our church I am one of two drummers. I was the primary drummer for about 2 yrs. The church uses my kit and gear. My man "T" came and started playing with us about 9 mths ago. I can honestly say that there is no jealousy on my part. The dude actually is one of my best friends now. I feel very blessed cause we don't try to compete but help one another. I fully realize that his skill level is higher than mine and since he started playing it has really helped me in trying to step it up on my part. So just go with the flow man and be blessed. Remember if God put you there as the drummer aint nobody gonna take you out unless God has something else for ya
