Where is everybody? Am I the only member that wants to hang out in here? :D
I feel so alone.

Hopefully in the near future,k we will get this going. :)

This is my kind of music; I guess I’m stuck back in time! :D :D

The fact is not many people can effectively teach this style of playing. Most of the up-and-coming musicians are in the contemporary style of playing. The ones who can play the old school style aren't stepping up and posting more information here, which is a tragedy.
-
OK, I guess I should stop hanging with the young people and come in here lol
sure, I love the traditional style of playing and all those wonderful chords that really bring an uplift to the music. Ole songs like:
I'm so glad Jesus lifted me
I was glad when they said unto me
You don't know like I know ( what He's done for me)
Saved by His Power Devine
Real, real Jesus is Real to Me
Can't Nobody do Me Like Jesus
I cried and He delievered Me
I'm so glad that the Lord saved me
Wonderful Jesus is to me
In the morning when I rise
and many more.............

Is there anybody else? :)

Love the contemporary and progressive. However, my roots are old school and traditional which I love the most. This is the basis of it all. Count me in for real.
I've been doing it a very long time. I can get as contemp as can be and can also do the same for old school traditional. It is nice to be well versed in both.

I love all kinds of music but my church is stuck in a time warp.....LOL. Naw I'm joking...but I would seriously love to get more info on traditional music. I am still trying to learn more about playing hymns and things of that nature, there are some pretty good posts in the Gospel Keyboard forum. I've been trying to study Mr. Tolberts materials in order to make my hymns sound better. I think that the traditional songs usually use the 1-4-5 progression...correct?
-
I am trying to learn all I can. We have to keep this alive. Anybody else out there?
-
Thank's SisterCM for your call. I too would like to keep this forum going. I was glad to see this forum created but I seldom post and I have never posted in this forum ... never knew what to say.
We mostly sing traditional songs in my church. Here's some of the songs we sung in church last night ....
In the Word of God I've Got a Place
Jesus Is the Light
It's Nobody's Fault But Mine
I Love To Praise Him
Glory, Glory Hallejuah
He's Sweet I Know

I'm new to this site, but not new to the traditional style of music. I love all kinds of music, but traditional music (in which I play) moves my soul. Traditional music gives me that uplifting I need to get through life situations we must face. There's nothing wrong with new music and music styles, but we can't forget the songs and hymns that paved the way for our parents and grandparents. This is like ignoring our history, our foreparents, our culture, and the foundation our families established which was built on faith and God's righteousness. So traditional means more to me than "the Old Songs", because these songs expresses feelings, real meanings, and tell a story. Some of these songs were created by our oppressed relatives suffering with civil rights issues, racism, and slavery. So when you hear those "old songs", remember it was those songs that helped our families get through those oppressing times, to allow us to be where we are today.

Welcome! :)

Is there anybody else? :)
I definitely prefer traditional over contemporary, but I rarely check this room because of the lack of interested people. :( I guess I'm not really helping the situation. :-\
-
theres nothing rong wit some good ol fashion music back in the daytime music... Im still looking for those songs .....
-
Im young but i think those old hymns are the songs when a organist can show is talents the best because the old songs have meaning and when you play it good it brings the meaning out more but in the new gospel its more of sound good thing!

Does anybody know the lyrics to "In the word of God I've got a place. Thanks,
-
We sing this song often. In fact, it is a favorite song of one of deacons. This is how we sing it:
In the word of God, I've got a place
In the word of God, I've got a place
In the word of God, I've got a place
I've got a place in the word of God.
Then we improvise
In the word of God, I've got joy, etc
I searched the internet for lyrics. I came up empty. I hope someone will come up with more complete lyrics.
-
Thanks teresac for the lyrics.
-
Quieter,
You're welcome.

:D The Deacon sung "Word of God" tonight. Some of the lyrics he sung are
Deacon: I may have to moan sometime
Congregation: In the word of God
Deacon: I have to moan sometime
Congregation: In the word of God
Deacon: I have to moan sometime
Congreagation: In the word of God
ALL: But I have a place in the word of God.

I am young but I like those traditional songs and hymnals. I grew up in churches that sung those songs. A couple of weeks ago I had this song in my head. I knew i heard that song before. It was "Lord keep me day by day" by the Caravans.
I need to learn more traditional songs.
-
CreneeW,
Welcome to LGM. I once was young but now I am older. We still have young people in our church, growing up still singing these songs. ;)
-
I'm with you SisterCm, I check this site often and no one appears to be interested. Traditional takes me back. Does anyone know the lyrics to this song with a line or title, "The little old church by the railroad".
Thanks!
-
Hi Quieter,
I'm not familiar with this song. I did a search and came up with "Little Old Church By the Road" Maybe another LGM member will be able to help.
-
This is my kind of music; I guess I’m stuck back in time! :D :D
No wonder you look so young on that pic! 8)
It's alllll startin to make sense now!

The traditional songs are always a blessing to hear. They remind me of growing up in my Baptist church in Houston. I believe that it has more feeling in the music and the voicing of singers. It also depends on how you were raised in the church. Some songs always hit deep in the soul. When newer groups sing those old hymns they are still great. With music in mind, If we don't know where we have been, then we don't know where we are going.

:) SisterCM, When ever I come on the site, this is the first place I click. Some years ago, I ordered a pianist hymnal and received Vol 1 & 2. This was the greatest investment. It has over 500 hymns/traditional songs. If you're looking for a traditional song, there is a great chance its in the book. Be blessed!

Quieter,
I went looking in my collections of music books. I have Great Gospel Hymns the accompanists edition. It has 150 hymns. What is the name of your pianist hymnal?

yes, I would like to know the names of the hymnals both of you have and where I can buy a copy. :)

It is the African American Heritage Hymnal/Keyboard Accompaniment Vol 1 & 2. I ordered it on-line. I'll check where I got, its been a while. Will let you know. Be Blessed!
-
I have the basic African American Heritage Hymnal and it has quite a few keyboard arrangements.
The Acc. edition has more?
-
Quieter,
Thanks, I found the African American Heritage Hymnal/Keyboard Accompaniment at Amazon. It cost $50.
betnich,
I already have the basic version. The advantage of using the Accompaniment version over the basic is first of all it is spiral bound for easy reading. But the most important reason is that the arrangements are for keyboard whereas in the basic hymnal the arrangements are SATB.
If I had known that there was an accompaniment version, I would have purchased the accompaniment version instead of the basic version. So tonight, I just had to order the Accompaniment version of the African American Heritage.
SisterCM,
The name of my book is "Great Gospel Hymns, the Accompanists Edition" . I don't remember where I got it. I did see the basic version at Amazon. Buy the African American Heritage accompaniment edition, then you don't need to buy "Great Gospel Hymns".
