Title: theory question: Shekinah Glory modulation
Post by: glorydweller on November 20, 2007, 10:20:29 PM
Hi LGM. I sat down today to figure out the chords on the modulation from track 2 to track 3 on Shekinah Glory Live - Disc 1. They're going from F minor to C# minor with this really cool, really powerful modulation. Here are the chords:

LH note/RH chord:

F/Fm
E/C#m
A/A
Eb/Eb
Ab/Ab
C#/C#m

Can someone explain what's going on here harmonically? I see that the last three chords are 2-5-1 in C# minor. Is there just a sequence preceding this? What do ya'll think?

From what I hear, the first chord is the ending of that key.  Then, the next chord is the pivot/modulation  chord to the next key.  The rest of the chords are there to establish the new key.  Illustrated version:

F / Fm  *end of old key, Fm (Ab major)

E / C#m  *pivot/modulation chord to new key, C#m (E major)

A / A
D# / D#sus7
G# / G#
C# / C#m

The last 4 chords represent a 6-2-5-1 progression to establish the new key C# minor.  Hope that helps.
