Title: THEY MAKE MY JOB AS A DRUMMER SO MUCH HARDER!!
Post by: yamahaboy on November 20, 2007, 11:26:38 PM
Ok, theres a 17 yr old guy at out church who has been at the Organ for about 8 mo. He is VERY good a backing up a preacher but thats about it. Last Sunday the choir sung an older song, so he jumps on the organ and just starts playing awful chords that were totally WRONG! He does not listen to direction because he thinks he know everything. My dad who has been playing since he was about 4 yrs old can't even help the guy because he thinks he knows it all he thinks everyone is wrong but him! Ive been playing over 16yrs and Im still LEARNING. The funny thing is, he has a Keyboard Account on LGM :D.. How should I let this dude know? I cant figure out a good way too tell him because HE'S MY SECOND COUSIN, and we are close. :-\ :( ?/? It drives me nuts because he has a swagger like he is just a Monster on keys.. His playing makes me feel like I have to work even harder to fill in the music. On top of all that, his step dad started playing organ and he is three times worse, but the step dad is a MONSTER ON THE BASS :o. Me and my dad are getting fed up and I want to just blow up on the guy but I know there is a better was to handle this. Thats why I came to LGM!

Do you guys think that a bad musician can make you job as a drummer alot harder than its has to be?

in a Michael Jackson voice.."You are not alone...." I'm going thru the same thing. We just got a new organist who should really be playing piano. He can't go a song without messing something up. He'll either not watch and forget the key, cut a section off by a bar or just misses whole sections of a song. He doesn't know how to back up the preacher, so the preacher can't get into his groove like he wants to. Any new song that he introduces is from 1988, and the other church members can't stand his playing. The only reason they haven't let him go yet is because he signed a "binding contract".

BOY stop gossiping.... LOL! j/k

On a serious note, considering the fact you said your cousin has an LGM account, I think you have made the first error in communication “ Going public.” What if he visits the drummer’s forum, you do have your “baby” picture in your avatar so there’s no denying that fact. Your father should approach your cousin’s father in regards to the matter. You stated you and your cousin are close than there should be a line or level of respect established amongst you two-talk to him. Honest communication is the key to any healthy relationship regardless to whom or what…

Boy welcome to the real world! Step up and be the man you’ll “someday” become. LOL!

Also, make sure you approach him from a standpoint of LOVE.  He's trying, he's putting forth effort, but it sounds like he needs to be more humble.

Didn't Jesus give us that example.  Does this person BELIEVE what he reads in His Bible?  Is he a SPIRIT- filled TRUE worshipper (in Spirit and in Truth?) who is ignoring/grieving the Holy Spirit w/ his actions and attitude OR did your church give this incredibly important role to "any old musician".

Brothers, we have to take positions in the church VERY seriously. Where is the reverence for GOD?   Where is the yearning for Excellence IN ALL THINGS for the Most High?

He either believes his attitudes and actions are in line with the Bible (see I Chor. 13 -- the "Fruit" of the Holy Spirit) or they are not.  He should feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit, but if he IS oblivious, we should lovingly ask "why?"....

I don't know what you guys think, but isn't your answer found in the Word -- how can he deny that?   One must know the word however, to realize that -- look at some of Pauls letters to the churches!

Also, its important to pray fervently for this brother.  God will work on His heart, but you should be praying for Him, again out of your Love for Him.

God Bless.

If you think you've got problems now, just wait until you try to be a musical director as well as the drummer.

One thing you can do is let him get into a situation where he's all by himself so he can show errrrbody just how bad he sounds.  I used to do this as a horn player in the marching band.  When somebody acted as if they were the best of the best when they weren't, I would find an opportune moment especially on a difficult part of the song and I would conveniently have to cough or drop something so they were out there by themselves.  Needless to say, when they got put on front street, the problem ceased.

Good question!

From what I'm hearing Sister Monroe (She's NOT the one to gossip) said it wasn't pretty. Details later, Sister Monroe (She's NOT the one to gossip) is still on the phone. It's been about 3 hours now...

After reading the posts, it sppears that Cherri is only having friendly banter with Yamahaboy.  Also, the last time I checked, you don't have to know someone to gossip about a person.

Educate yourself (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/gossip).

The first time I told him he brushed it off because he thought I didn't know about playing. The second time my dad and Aunt told him. They basically said that the whole band needs to play TOGETHER and that we need to get together as a whole and talk about the situation, He took it well when my dad told him.It is getting out of hand yall, he is loud and doesnt know when to control the volume of the service :(... I hope this Sunday is better... Ill update you all Sunday!

This shows how the drummer tends to not be considered a "real" musician with knowledge by some people(your cousin).  We just beat drums.  Hopefully he will take your words a little more to heart now that your father and aunt have backed you up on this point.  Your cousin is young, so hopefully he will calm down and learn what being a musician really means and realize that the drummer can know what he's talking about.

Very good point man! Tomorrow will tell if he took heed to what we told him. He doesnt realize that LOUD doesnt always make it BETTER. If we play together then each musician wont feel like they have to "Out Play" Each other! That is when the music is pure chaos!

Yamahaboy, can I ask a question? I honestly know where you're coming from but what does the Pastor have to say about how your cousins playing? Besides you and your family does anybody else feel the same way about him? Just remember that aside from you 2 being musicians, he is your cousin (your blood) & keep his feelings in mind. You're close, dont let the devil come in between you 2 and start no mess. If you're saved and not just a musician occupying a spot in church, you'd pray about it & let God guide you in what to say (that's if He has you say anything at all). Be wise.  ;)
