Here's what I'm burning on

When will teams learn that "close but no cigar" is not good enough to beat the New England Patriots. Is it me or are teams continuing to get a false sense of security when they have a lead going into the 4th quarter? Last nights game is exhibit A of why you have to play 60 minutes of football in order to win the dawg gone game. Ok I'm finished now......LOL :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

you and your pats gas can is looking like its burning low...
don't be shocked if the pats go home first round...

NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN. ::)

What do you guys think about the calls that the refs made last night? The Ravens said that the refs were verbally abusive.... ::)

That's why I find all of these crazy celebrations when teams score so uncalled for. You can do a great end zone dance and still lose if your defense aint worth a blip. It doesn't matter until you actually win the game.

Well, Jim Rome, ::) the thing about penalties being called is timing. The same pass interference call in the second quarter always looks suspect to the losing team during the final moments of a close game.
But, the fact of the matter is: pass interference IS pass interference; especially the call at the end of last night's game.

I absolutely agree with you. I think that the Ravens are sore losers. Close but no cigar is not good enough....bottom line. I think that out of all the mistakes, the Raven's coach made the biggest one by calling that defensive time out....
-
i hate the pats its like i knew somehow they would win but i wanted them to loose i bet if they loose they wont be the same just like the colts ;D
the only team i see maybe beating them now is the steelers or maybe the giants or maybe the dolphins will do like they did a few years back and pull a upset on the pats
THAT WOULD BE NICE
-
Was anyone else amused by Harrison and Bellicks little exchange of "kisses" during the game? :D :D
-
I think the coach (RAVENS) needs to be fired. :) Why would you call timeout and your defense is man handling the best offense in the NFL???? ?/? ?/? ?/?

I thought that was one of the coordinators who called timeout. Whoever it was, that sideline was maaaaaaaaaad.

It was the defensive coach..He was yelling time out in the refs ear.... It was a stupid move..

My guess is the Steelers will prolly be the ones who lose by 20 or 30 points or more...who knows :-\
The key to beating the Pats is getting to Brady and scoring points without mistakes. Until someone does that....FORGET ABOUT IT!!! ;D

that is so true. but trust me, if the Pats go through the regular season unbeaten. I think they will not win the superbowl.
and another thing. the refs, made some terrible calls all game. especially the so called game-winning touchdown. THAT WAS NOT A CATCH!!!!!!

Ya know what I am sitting here watching the replay of that catch on ESPN's First Take and I don't think that it was a catch. But you know what though, the Ravens made a lot of mistakes before that call. If they had've taken care of business and not called that stupid time out then maybe it wouldn't have came down to that one play.....who knows. Either way, an L is an L and a W is a W... :-\ You feel sick to the stomach about the way they lost, I would rather be blown out than to lose the way they lost.

Yea, you right. I rather lose by 100 than 3. But I think in the last min of any game (NFL, NBA,NCAA) just let them play. Did hear what the ref was saying to S. Rolle. He was calling him a boy, and told him to shut up and play. Couldnt have been me, LOL!!!!

The refs should always be seen and not heard. Having said that, last night I thought that the Ravens were just sore losers but the more I look at it today...I see how they could have a beef. I would have went nuts on somebody if I put my heart and soul into beating someone and ended up losing like that. That game last night was the Ravens Super Bowl and to lose it like they did was a sickening feeling. Nobody gave the Ravens a dogs chance to even get within 20 points of the Pats and boy oh boy....

How fitting would that be if the Dolphins would get their first and only win this season against New England?

You know, while that's cute and all, I just don't see the Pats allowing the 'Fins to let that happen.
All that said, they'll probably put a hurtin' on the Steelers and have another close one against the 'Fins.
Can't you see Mercury Morris coming off the sidelines and hittin' Randy Moss in the mouth before he catches the game-winning TD pass? :D

Nah, they scratched the new version of 'Gladiators' because they couldn't come up with the money to pay Arsenio Hall as the co-host.

Hey..............REX RYAN MADE ONE MISTAKE AND HE SHOULD BE FIRED?.......Oh no! not after all the good work he's put into that D'!!!!!
If I didn't like my defensive alignment on 4th and short in the fourth quarter....I'D CALL TIMEOUT LIKE HE DID!
This thing you guys have with it now is just a matter of what didn't happen that would've happened if he hadn't called the T.O........But how could he have known any way?
And I think the bigger mistake was going deep with 10:40 left.
okay her's what I say!
#1 The Ravens had it in the bag........but somebody held (Scott I think)
#2 The Ravens had it in the bag........but false start is not a declinable call
#3 The Ravens had it in the bag........but they were greedy with 10:40 left
#4 I don' care what nobody say.........GAFFNEY BOBBLED!!!!!
Here's a good shot! It'sat 5:53.

The Gaffney catch was wierd........................
1- How do you determine what control is?? Some can control with fingers, some with hands, some with body.
2- that wasn't gettin reversed, it wasn't enough evidence. They had to stick with the call on the field. If it was called incomplete, it wouldn't have been reversed either.
man, everybody has their bad games. I personally can't stand the pats but I respect it. Mike Ditka even said that his 85 Bears defense would have trouble wit the pats this year.

Ya know......
Mike Ditka can be smart in the simplest way sometimes. or maybe he's simple in the smartest way!
I'll never be too quick to take to anything he says........
Homeboy traded away his teams entire draft just to get Ricky Williams!!!
Well anyway he was taskmaster style of coach to begin with.
Okay maybe he's not that smart
He's discrediting that '85 Bears D' just a li'l bit don't cha think?!?!?!
And I don't know what he's talkin' about he didn't coach that Defense...........Buddy Ryan coached that Defense!!!!!
I thought I saw Baltimore get to Brady a few times..........
No way........NO WAY that Pats O' Line would block Dent.....and Singletary.......and Marshall.......and then McMichael.......and then Hampton.......and the occasional Fencik!
NO WAY!!!!!
-
I hope that they go undefeated in the regular season and then get beat in the playoffs. That would shut them up like Randy Moss said that the Pats shut the Ravens up...::) How heart breaking would it be to be perfect in the regular season, just to end up like the Colts were that year they got beat in the playoffs. Having said that, I personally don't think that the Pats are going to lose because "close but no cigar" is not a win. Until these teams learn to control their emotions, limit their turnovers, and stop having a false sense of security...no one will beat the Pats. Brady could throw 5 INTS and get sacked 10 times and still find a way to win, as long as the other team continues to make costly mistakes.
-

I don't know about NO way; but, it'd be an interesting matchup.
And, be careful, sounds like you're trying to put the 85 Bears D up there with the 'Steel Curtain' D of the 70s Steelers. :-\

They could...........because the safeties would HAVE to play two deep (unless they want Randy to burn them) so some of the 46 is gone right their. New England spreads the field out a lot so Singletary and Marshall would be forced to play coverage smetimes. They wouldn't blitz as much due to the threat of maroney burning them. Also, most of NE's plays come from the shotgun/pistol, giving Brady some more time. SO basically you got 5 OL's plus an ocassional RB blocking the front 4. You see that the team that actually relied on passing (the dolphins) were the only ones to beat them, and that receiving core aint got Randy Moss......................

On Sunday who ya got? Steelers vs Pats

Don't blame that on passing!
It took one of the Greatest minds in Pro Footbal history in Don Shula calling plays with one of the greatest arms in history in the game Dan Marino.
Don Shula was able to put anything together with any team against any team. Belichick is a great mind in Football but nobody is Don Shula!
Except Don Shula!

Often times we think in terms of "THE OFFENSE IS JOKER".............The "46" wasn't about answering the offenses moves....it was about the offense answering their moves.
The main thing about the "46" was the thought that "YOU BETTER NOT SPREAD OUT UNLESS YOU WANT THE QB TO DIE!!!!!"
The front seven was fast enough to get to the QB before the WRs could get any separation.......
Just look at the highlight reels......those QBs were on the turf before they could set their feet to throw.
So cross out that thought of throwing it to the RBs.......They gotta stay back and at least keep the QB in good enough shape to wake up th next morning!

You're cute with only looking at the Pats for the last three weeks. ::)
As for the 85 Bears D vs. the '07 Pats offense, there's no way to tell. All we have is our opinion(s) on the matter.
But, I'll say this; the Pats, as it stands right now, are undefeated. The Bears lost one game that year.
Somebody figured out that vaunted '46' D.8)
-
Randy Moss is light years in front of ANY receiver that that bears d played............Irving Fryar in the Super bowl? NO! Marinos boys? NO! Okay lets say that NE goes double tights wit a single back.......I STILL take Randy Moss over their corner..........in the 46 that safety is tooooo lose to the line to get back into coverage............and whiles hes no Jim Brown, Laurence Maroney still has to be respected in the play action. There aren't that many coners all time that can see Randy one on one deep..............and the bears corners got covered up for by a killer front 7. A lot of defenses have that happen......The Bears defense was good...........probably the best.........but not by far like everybody thinks they were

Of course......anybody's gonna take Randy over the Corner. But time and again it's been proven that all you have to do is double him. If you double Moss he often has a bad game. The Pats won't have anybody gettin' loose fast enough for Brady to get the Ball off.
And no I'm sorry but Maroney...............wait,wait,wait.......PLAYACTION PASSES WOULD GET YOU KILLED AGAINST THE '85 BEARS!!!
It's not just the Blitz......It's the respct of the Blitz.......For the '85 Bears it worked like a defensive playaction.......
Here they are lined up 7 across and then they only rush 1.......WHO WOULD GET TO THE QB!!!......The RBs would be left blocking nobody!
You're still ignoring what the D' does......You seem to be in thought that the Bears would bend.....But aggressive playcalling is how they caused the offenses to bend and audible out!

ARE WE PLAYING CYBER FOOTBALL???

For real though.................this is sports. ALL ABOUT MATCHUPS!!!! In order to play the Pats you GOTTA have some serious athleticism at ya DB's (Baltimore and Philly :-)). I dont care how good ya front seven is (Dallas). Take the 2000 Ravens......you had Tony Siragusa and Sam Adams on the line, Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, and Adalius Thomas on the LB squad. Rod Woodson (HOF) and Chris McCallister at DB...........They could at least tame the receivers enough to let the front 7 work.thats the one thing you never hear about a bears D, their DB's. Even the old Bucs defense with Simeon Rice, Jonh Lynch, Ronde Barber, Dexter jackson, Warren Sapp and thhose boys would have a shot with the Pats

The two of us have very different outlooks on Football. I guess that's why they call the ultimate TEAM game.
You like matchups! that's good they go a good distance.
But the team that beat the Bears that year was the team that could avoid their rush! Nobody beat their DBs 'cause they didn't have time to get open! Do you honestly think the Dolphins had the best reciving core at that time..........I don't think so....that must've been S.F. AND THEY HAD THE GREATEST!!!!
Oh yeah S.F. was held to 10 points that year........... ;) And please don't compare Moss to Rice..........ever!!!
By the way.......................Adailus Thomas played in 3 games and tallied 1 tackle in 2000. that other LB was Jamie Sharper!!!!
Gotta ha' yo history straight if you gon' make reference of matchups!!!
Oh yeah and how many games did B'More loose that year?
And Chicago of '85 lost 1!
AND NEITHER TEAM HAD MUCH OF AN OFFENSE TO SPEAK OF!
So don't compair The '00 Ravens D' to the '85 Bears D'!

Brady in that shotgun, plus chippin' a lineman before going out into the flat is enough to slow down the Bears D.
And, just win they think they'll jump the pass out in the flat.....BOOM, Wes Welker (who's speed is underrated) OR Donte Stallworth (who's fast enough) catch the pass on a crossing route (with some decent YAC ;) )
And, just when you think you have that figured out.....BAM!, ya hit Randy burnin' the snot outta the safety for '6'. 8)
You said the ONE thing that ends this argument and tips the scale in the Pats favor (not that there aren't others, but for the sake of time):
The Bears offense was offensive (as in horrible).
Jim MacMahon; really? ::)
Pats win, in a close one, 17-14 ;) 8)
BTW, the 2000 Ravens were 12-4. ;) 8) Four teams figured out THEIR D, too. ::)
Oh, and you make another point, how can the 'Fins of '85 manage a feat NO other team could that year (this is the season with Montana and Rice, mind you), but you give the Pats NO shot. What ARE you smokin'? ::)
-
stallworth gots to be the fastest on the team i remember when he played for the saints he smoked the whole d

My point here was that the '85 Bears D' was better than the '00 Ravens D'......as evidenced by 4 losses to only 1! without the offense!

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT COMPARE RICE TO MOSS????? The thing that made rice a great receiver was dedication and perseverence, NOT PHYSICAL SKILL!!! There has never been a physical specimen like Randy Moss that played receiver let alone football (Probably Jim Brown, GO CUSE lol). The Bears would NEVER see anybody like him because back in those days 6'4" + 40" vertical=BASKETBALL! Ask anybody who REALLY knows football regardless of the qb or system who would you take, Randy or Jerry and I GUARANTEE you get more randy's. Jerry played in the west coast w/ all kinds of good receivers and rb's and 2 HOF qb's, AND a bangin defense toget the 3 and out. Then he went to oakland and STILL played with a throwing offense and another HOF 1000 cathc receiver, with a good qb (gannon). Randy played with Chris Carter (end of career) and robert smith (end of career) and Randall cunningham (end of career). You cant even say Daunte because you see where he's at with no randy.

Uh, you may be reachin', chief. No one in their right mind would choose, in his prime, Randy Moss over a, in HIS prime, Jerry Rice.
What Randy has in physical gifts, Jerry makes up for in:
a. dedication to preparation
b. incredible route-running capability
c. the willingness to go over the middle
d. an awesome off-season workout program that players TO THIS DAY use to prepare for the next season.
Let Randy get a couple of rings (and into the HOF) before we try comparing him to the INCOMPARABLE Jerry Rice. ;)

Uuuuhh excuse me brother........
All that separation you see Moss gettin'.........Jerry Rice was gettin' that kind of separation past his 15th year.
Rice was smokin' young cats when he played with the Raiders.
Let Moss............wait,wait..............all this talk about how good the Patriots and now you're trying to discredit that talent? Moss has talent around him as well. HE JUST PLAYS WHEN HE WANTS TO!
By the way........I'll add this......Jerry Rice made players around him better (Yong, Taylor, Craig, Garner, Porter).
That's what Moss would've been doing in Oakland (Jordan?, Curry?, Walter?, Entire O-Line?) if he'd played 100%!
You mean to tell me Moss couldn't run nothin' but a weak limp of a Fade in Oakland......but all of a sudden he goes to New England and he's having a hall of fame year?????? I don't think so!!!!!!! That's evidence that Moss needs Brady! Either that or he just takes plays off or years!
In reference to your comment about height..........Look up a guy named Harold Carmichael!
-
Answer my question though...............REGARDLESS of the system or qb, who would you take???????? Rice had 2 HALL OF FAME QAUTERBACKS dude..............2......are you saying that Jerry has Randy SPeed???? Dont think so..................Not taking ANYTHING away from rice but he is a system player who ALWAYS benifited form the second and third receivers.......his last couple of years randy didnt have that and he STILL killed...........NO WAY he would have every record like that if he wasn't.......I SAID his dedication is what made him who he is..........they both are comin out of college (dont forget Randy wasn't a slouch) who do you pick???????
-

Jerry Rice was nobody's system player! Please count the number of Hall of Fame WRs and Hall Of Fame RBs Rice played with....the wole career.
I'll do it for you.......Rice played with Tim Brown at the end of his career. Tim Brown is the only H.O.F. WR or RB he's ever played with!!!! that's not good enough surrounding talent to call Rice a "system player"
In reference to him playing with two H.O.F. QBs.
Montana was good without him......but the 49ers started blowin' teams out when they got Rice.....that's how they became the team of the '80s.
Young is in the Hall Of Fame because he had Rice to take attention from other okay players making them good players. i.e.
And this is gonna be my bigger statement of the day!
In '06 Randy Moss didn't crack the top 50 in receptions leaders.
In '05 Randy Moss was tied for 42nd in receptions.......tied for 42nd
In '04 Randy Moss once again didn't crack the top 50.
But back in '03......when Randy felt like playin'.....He ranked in at 2nd in receptions.
RANDY MOSS PLAYS WHEN HE WANTS TO!!!!!
AND HE SUCKS WHE HE DOESN'T WANT TO!!!!!
-
I'll make my last point on Randy Moss before it appears that I just don't like the guy.
Moss is not good as the leader of a team.
Example: Jerry Porter showed so much promise as a young reciever when he played under Jerry Rice and Tim Brown
Rice and Brown retire
enter Moss
.....And all of a sudden Porter has the nerve to let his attitude stink?!?!?
-
Yo i NEVER EVER EVER EVER said anything about effort, or leadership, or any of that, Im talkin bout a player gfted to play WR, not who works or tries harder, OF COURSE its jerry on that. How many players absolutely SUCK but are great team leaders? A LOT. How many players are absolutely wonderful but the worst leaders ever? A LOT....How can you say he wasn't a system player?? In college HE was the whole team......in the NFL he had all kinds of weapons......more than Randy could dream of. The 49ers of his day were comparable to the patriots today in the fact that you just COULD NOT guard them, and he had the D to back it up to keep his offense on the field over and over. Back when he played their was no heavy league wide emphasis on the Cover 2 or really strong physical corners.......not including Brady, His qb's (young, montana, gannon) are WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than randy's (culpepper, cunningham, whoever at oakland

Dude, you can't make that argument. You're trying to take away from Jerry Rice because of:
a. where he was drafted
b. his teammates (mainly his QBs)
Rich Gannon, dude; seriously? He belongs in the same category with Culpepper and Cunningham but with a better arm, that's it.
I take Jerry Rice over Moss, even coming out of college because you CAN'T throw out the intangibles of a player.
Being a WR isn't JUST about how high you can jump or how fast you can run. It's about playing ALL facets of the game EVERY down. You NEVER heard about Jerry Rice taking a play off or playing when he wanted.
Steve Largent held all kinds of passing records UNTIL Jerry Rice came along. Largent was definitely NOT the fastest or tallest receiver in the NFL in his day. ;) 8)
JR could beat you downfield OR go across the middle (a feat that Randy REFUSES to try unless absolutely necessary, just check out some game footage ;) ).
The interesting and boring thing about conversations like this is the fact that we have hindsight. Knowing what we know about these two gifted WRs is:
a. One is in the HOF
b. One will be in the HOF
c. One has more Super Bowl rings
-
forget randy moss t.o. is better and he played with jerry rice

how do u get green stars ?/? and what they mean

i hope the pats go undefeated. i'm tired of those old cranky man (fins) every year breaking open champange to celebrate. have they done anything else in their pitful lives since the 70"s?
also, who ever thinks that moss is better then rice, i got a drug test i want to give you.
lastly, not being a homer, i saw the 85 bears up close and personal. some of their players could ball today. wilson and marshall had the speed and skills to cover tight ends and backs. dent could pass rush w/the best of them (should be hof). hampton was a beast, fencik, great saftey. decent corners. they were able to play man to man because of that great front 4. the 46 with good to great players was made to stop any offense. hard to throw off of your backside. that being said, the pats (2007) might be the greatest complete team ever. time will tell.

Yea, I swear I said somewhere in this thread that this just might be the game the Patriots came to their senses.
Could it be that the Patriots play to their opponents? :o Time will tell. 8)

...and if you're gonna talk smack, do it right.
You don't get in the guy's face and then back away while putting your hands into the hand-warmer draped around your waist. I bet the convo went something like this...
Tom Brady: Nanny nanny boo boo...hehehehe
Anthony Smith: ....the 9. F. H. did you say?
Tom Brady: *skipping away backwards* We just scored a TD on you! *sticks out tongue*
