Title: Abe Laboriel Jr. LEARN......
Post by: Audiocr381ve on December 28, 2007, 07:51:23 PM
I found this video and it is the perfect example of the last thread "advice from audio" I posted. I've learned a lot by watching this thread, I hope you do.

This man was hired for a reason! This is what we practice for. To be so mentally and physically prepared so we can walk into a situation and be completely natural enough to play for the song.

Ask yourself, would you of held back and let the song breathe like he did? He was completely natural. He was listening so closely to the song he wasn't even thinking of how loud or balanced he was, or if the rhythm was right. It flowed out naturally because he spent time soaking up as much knowledge as he could, and taking the time to develop himself.

You might think you'd never be put in a musical situation like that. Why not?

That was great. It's like he only filled in the spaces that were there, he didn't try to create any extra spaces himself. Like you said, letting the music breathe. It's not so much knowing what to leave out, but knowing what to put in(if that makes any sense :-\). It's not like it's boring the way he plays, but you can to tell that an understanding of placement and approach like that is something that comes with experience and study. It can't just be mimicked. And when that kind of approach is copied, it's completely unnatural. It would take me 4 hands to count how many 32nd or 64th note fills I'd try and throw in that song right there :D. Thanks a lot for the share, his playing is very inspiring. This challenges me to go to another level musically. GB ;) :)

I love that video. He is sick. Man he let that song breathe. His groove was sick. His playing just seemed free. Very inspiring. GB.

I wonder what Mics hes using..

From what I can see, here is what I've gathered:

Toms: Sennheiser MD421 II - one of my favorites
Hi-hat: Shure SM81 (I think)

But of course, that's only 25% of the picture.  50% is EQing and 25% of that is microphone placement.

...Abe is the man.  That "One Take" clip is sooo on point. Gotta let that song breathe for real.  I see too many drummers my way choke the mess out of every song. LOL
