Man, after trying about 10 different types of strings I think I've found MY strings.
They're crisp, warm, and sound GOOOOODDD. I don't think i'll be buying anything else...even though I know people with some "hookups" on all types of brands.
Try them out if you haven't!!!!
-
Those are gonna be the next set of strings I get, the last time I went to purchase strings, they didn't have Fatbeams, so I settled with LowRiders, then my wife bought me some Dean Markley Blue Steels, but I still wanted to get my hands on the fatbeams.

he LowRiders are good, but they aren't on the level of the fatbeams IMHO.
The fatbeams have excellent tension and they just sound like BUTTER not to mention the over feel of the string is great. The tension is very balanced across the strings. I'm using a 34" Jazz bass.
If these didn't work out i was going to try out the elixirs, but I don't feel that urge anymore.

+1 on the fatbeams

As the youngsters say now-a-daysREAL TALK!!!
With that being said I played them in service yesterday and THEY WERE ROCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The definition in the highs is amazing. And you can be so mellow that you'll have the mothers board bobbing their head.

I'm using them on my MIM V String, and they do sound good, because I really wasn't a fan of DR's but these seem to be ok.
-
Yeah, I'm looking to buy some in bulk now. I figure if I get 12 sets that should last me a little over a year.
-
whats up JR im going to hae to try those out!!!!! i use DR high beams and theyre a bit edgy till you wear them in....so you say the fat beams are mellow???????

They are MELLOW doc.
My lakland could get almost a flat wound kind of mellow, so not as mellow as my lakland with lakland nickels, but still very mellow. VERY diverse strings doc!!

The Hi-beams are indeed edgy... I'd describe them as being very "accurate" strings, crisp, defined and super clear. The fatbeams give you that clarity as well but smoothed out a bit with booty on the low end. Trust us, you'll love the fatties!
-
I have a set of Marcus Millers that BassbyGrace sent me last year. I am going to put them on a Fender fretless Jazz bass sometime this month.
-
The Dr Fatbeams are the Marcus Miller signiture strings. I honestly did not know they were called Fatbeams, until today when I went to go buy a set. Those are the string I use also. When I buy them I just had always asked for the Marcus Miller set, never read the box. Excellent strings!
-
Is the Fatbeams roundcore or hexcore... i use the lowriders because i like my tension really tight and it has that hexcore feel
-
Yeah after further review, they have become my go to strings. I think bcause I had them in Iraq, the weather conditions were jacking up how they played. As Jeremy stated, they are very versatile strings. I just live the slap feel of them. The strings have a natural groove tone to them.

Thank you brother..For months Ive been flying around with steels thinking that they are for me But DR Fatbeams are 4 real..Thanks

Jeremyr, Greetings my brother I know you speak of the Lackland in this thread but I'm curious I cant make out the Axe in your avatar, it doesn't look like a Lackland.
What Bass is that?

The Axe is "Hot" if you'd be so kind as to post a shot of the Bass from nut to bridge it would be most appreciated.

It was time for a string change on the Marchlewski, so I stripped off the Ken Smith Rock Master Mediums and put on DR Fat Beams. I took the opportunity to do an A/B. I played a couple tunes that I've been working on for service, first with the Smith strings, then with the Fat Beams. I did one song fingerstyle, thumped out the other one. All tone settings on the bass, preamp, and power amp were exactly the same. The Zoom H2 I used to record was set at the same levels and in the same position.
I must say I didn't notice much of a difference in the fingerstyle tone of either set of strings. For slapping, the DRs seemed to be a bit tighter and more focused in tone than the Ken Smiths. Some of the difference is no doubt the age of the strings. The Ken Smiths have been on for a few months. On the other hand, I haven't played this bass a whole lot in those past few months, so they still had some life left in them.
Feel free to listen and draw your own conclusions.

This is probably a stupid question but are the fatbeams great on Bs
-

Pretty sure the Fats are roundcore. I've been thinking about these, but I'm pretty set on the Sunbeams on my jazz and Lo-Riders on my 55-02. May have to try these jewels next time I change strings.

Did you modify that line or is that the way the song actually goes? That sound is so SOS-ish. Man, I love it!

I guess all I can say is I played it like I heard it. I did not intentionally add or drop anything, but I wouldn't swear that it's note for note.
Peace,

JUST BOUGHT A PAIR....THEY SOUND GOOD....
-
How do they feel?
I tried some LowRiders back in the day (Loved the sound) and they ripped my fingertips to shreds.

......They feel lighter than I thought they would. the sound is very balanced as a set, meaning the G's quality is in line with the other strings without any adjustment.
I will post something tonight maybe

I didn't know that you had The J(unk) as well.
-
Jeremy gets to borrow all kinds of cool toys.
That is the original J(unk) proto, I learned alot from building it and made significant improvements in the actual production models. That one features 60's style pickup placement, as a result of that Maurice and I developed the "two-seven" which features a 70's placed bridge pickup with a neck pickup that is a little closer to the neck. It's the ultimate slap J bass, but thanks to Carey's proprietary pickups it tracks and cuts amazingly in session and live situations. The "fingerstyle" tone is super sharp and defined. Very articulate and "burpy" on the bridge and super fat in the neck. Honestly, I didn't take these basses too seriously because I'm not a huge J fan (there are so many great ones out there I didn't know what I could contribute), but we created a real monster with the finished versions. Many thanks to Maurice and Owen Biddle for helping to get these going and dial them in.
The one in Jeremy's picture was a "quick-built" concept proto designed to get feedback.
That particular bass features the first pair of Nordstrand Big Splits.
I'd be interested in knowing what Jeremy thinks of Maurice's "real" one, but from what I hear Maurice isn't willing to share it!
Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I like the low-riders but the sunbeams are my favorite strings in the DR lineup. Carey turned me on to these and they have a real even sound and a great feel.

I've tried the low-riders, but I don't think that the sound is as balanced as the fat-beams. I also like the slightly lower tension of the fat beams.

they really are a great set of strings, and mine are STILL sounding hot to death!!!!
-
Once my Fender Jazz gets here tomorrow, I may have to put some DR fatbeams on her and try her out. I was about to try out some D'addario Pro Steels. I heard they sound good, but all this DR talk gots me thinking. I've found the strings for my schecter though. I'm using Ken Smiths medium lights and she sings a sweet tune.

FAT BEAMS ON URIAHS BASS (http://www.uriahsmusic.com/FATBEAMSDEMO.wmv)
I Love the sound of DR strings period man, either Low Riders or Fat Beams its all good, But Uriahsmusic I thought you were gonna allow the little one to rock the Axe I saw mad interest.
All things in due time I guess, God bless you my Brother.
-
This thread provoked me to take some DR Low Riders, that I had as back-up strings, after I removed them, and put them back on my bass, after a 15 minute soak, in a pot, of boiling water. ;) Instantly fell in love all over again. (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=49787396&blogID=213595989 (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=49787396&blogID=213595989))
I think I am home with DR, no more experimenting. Except for the Fatbeams next.
-
Put on some Fatbeams today.... couldn't tell a whole lot of difference from the Lo-Riders
-
I used to use Fat-Beams (and Low-Riders) before I tried the High-Beams. The Fat-Beams are a little too boomy for me.
High-Beams are perfect for my setup!

I have heard good things about these DR Fatbeams and with that said I will give them a try next. I am currently running Ken Smith strings on my 5-string TUNE and was thinking of running MTD strings next; but with reading this post; I will be trying the DR Fatbeams next.
Thanks everybody for chimming in.
