...as a drummer, not knowing what song the choir is gonna sing until the organist starts! Man I can remember like it was yesterday! You watch the director make communictaion with the organist and they never say a word to you! :D The coldest feeling ever, like, I hope I know this one! :D
Alright yall, I want to hear some good ones! Testimony service is now open to each and everyone of you... :D

Alright...I am at a musical a while back, and the way the stage was set up resulted in the drums being in East Cupcake somewhere, away from the choir, and the musicians. Now my mom is the minister of music as well as the keyboardist and she writes most of our songs, so it's not like I remember a song off CD or anything like that. So I see her talking to our director and they decide on a song...WITHOUT TELLIN ME!!!! ::) So I'm like waving my sticks to trying to get somebody's attention, but I was so far away nobody could see me. To top things off, there were A LOT of drummers there and everybody felt the need to use every single piece of their own hardware, cymbals and snare. So not only can I not get anybody's attention, I'm trying to throw my snare and kick on at the same. Luckily, there's a little intro to the song that bought me some time, but I still couldn't recognize the song itself!!! I finally get my equipment right, and the choir starts. Fortunately, this was a slow joint we were doing so while I listened to the first verse to try and remember the song, I just played some little accents trying to play it off (you know how when you have absolutely no idea what's going on, so you just start accents as a fallback LOL!!!!!! When in doubt, ACCENT!!!!!). By the middle of the first verse I recognized the song, but stuck with the accents as if I meant to play those in the first place LOL SMOOTH 8)) By the time the chorus came around I was gravy...that's how you come through in the clutch BABY!!!!! LOL ;D :D

Or even worse, when the MD organist or whateva pulls a song from like centuries ago, (not to mention not planned ) and then on top of that he gives this 15 sec solo as the intro to (IMO) show off for some strange reason and I don't know what dude was playing until he really got into the intro, and on top of that the group had a puzzled look as well while all of this was going!!!! asked why he did what he did after the service, he said it was "God" led ?/? ?/? ?/? ?/?, what ever happened to decency and in order....Geesh >:( ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bruh this is an everyday event at our church, and just like you I can't stand it!!!!
I'm like jeeze can yall give me a few minutes so I can find it on somebody's iPod or something...lol

LOL! When in doubt accent! I usually do cymbal swells! Thats works as well! :D

Ha ha haaaa! That is the coldest feeling ever! The whole time youre waiting to hear familiar chords :D
So what do you guys do? Do you inch away at the drums until you figure out what song youre playing or do you just pound away with confidence? ;D

I mean come on, Does the song Amazing Grace really need a Rattle Snake shake for half of a verse?

What about when youre visiting a church and they ask for a volunteer drummer cause their drummer got arrested last night, and they do the weakest song ever! And on top of that, the musicians are horrible and they make you look and sound bad as well! I would usually do a few unessasary tricks when the song was over just so everyone knows that I can really play! :D These were my younger years :D Anyone else guilty of doing that? ;D

The bold is mine frequently. And to add to that i remember one time i listened and practised to a song that we were supposedly going to sing one Sunday, and so comes then, and all of a sudden they decide to change the song and not tell me but tell everyone else. >:(

Yea I'm definetly guilty LOL...like this one time this keyboardist lady was like "this song has a bit of a carribean feel to it." Im like ok no problem. Then she bust out with oldest quartet groove known to man, I'm thinkin, "what carribean you talking bout????" LOL, so after the catastrophe, I played this COMPLETELY unecessary lick mad loud LOL. It was so stupid but I wasn't goin out like no punk!!!! ;D :D

Man, Im guilty as charged with the last sentence man ;D I didn't think anyone else done that!. What about when you get on the kit and you do a double on the kick and the really famous "Double Stroke Roll" On the Hi Hats!
Man, I hate when the Choir Director picks a song that I don't like playing >:( I really don't like playing that song "Faithful Is Our GOD" by Hezekiah Walker and it seems like everytime we play somewhere with mad drummers, We decide to play that song. *GRRRR ,Hsss,Snarle* :D

Im wouldnt call myself a "beast" or whatever but u just gave me an idea lol.
Ay man, I ain't a beast either lol, not even close. I'm a decent drummer. But anyway, I just love to throw cats off who are like STARING at you when you're about to play. So I hit each drum, one at a time, almost like "oh, so that's what that drum sounds like". You'll be able to see dudes snickering and making faces right away, then once they hear that you're actually a decent player, their like OOOOOOKKKKKKK....LOL

And you guys know that the drummer always tries to start up the song again after its over so you hurry up and try to get on so you can kill the reprise! :D Not to show the guy up, but so that everyone can hear an advanced contribution to the song! :D :D :D

AWW MAN!!!!! Guilty as charged!!!! The choir before mine sang "praise is what I do" and dude played the entire vamp with like NO ENERGY!!! So I get on and dude on the organ does the "dun dun dun dun DUN!!!!" (Yall know what I mean lol) and I was like "nice 8)". LOL ;D ;) :D

LOL! this thread is too funny...But how bout this one....theres a dude on drums thats not all that good, but he thinks he's so nice.....and he saw you walk in with your snare and stick bag, so he knows that YOU play drums....so every time he does a lick, descent or bad, he looks at YOU too see if you're in awe of what he did....then when it comes time for your choir to sing, you eat his business! And you go even harder than you would have if it wasn't for is prior actions....and all he can do is feel stupid for trying to show you up...lol

Yeah I feel you on that NJ. I used to keep an eye out for cats that I looked up to. They would give me the nod, like, either "good job" or "dude what are you doing!" :D

Haha, and when they do the part in bold, sometimes idk what to do and i might mess up more.
Off subject but: I have a vid. of that dude on keys that i was ranting about, ill get someone to upload it for me so yall can crack up lol. ;D If you look closely at me you might can tell im ticked off a little.

OMG dude.....whenever I'm at my choir practice and some other drummer comes in to check it out.....I play the simplest I can....I guess i don't want people to think im showing off...this also happened to me when I went to my convention this thanksgiving......we practiced the songs with the m.c. before the big service....there were drummers behind me just checking me out....I ran through the songs before the service so cheap....haha....like I played them with no energy and no cool stuff....they were expecting me to bust out chops and stuff....whenever im at the gig though....I do my thing....I just block anyone thats there watching me and expecting me to bust chops and concentrate on the music...if i do chops it's beacuse I feel it in the moment...but i must admit i have done some chops on purpose so people dont think im wack...lol....it feels and fits so much better when chops come out naturally....

I had this time that I was playing a huge convention and it was the alter time and everyone was in worship and I was in the middle of drumming. The seat I had was a DIXON with the back (anyone know it?) lets just say not up to standard....The rivet in the leg busted and I went down backwards flat on my back! I went down so hard I knocked out the wind out of myself. The sound man was a drummer, saw it and thought "WOW CURTIS WENT DOWN IN THE SPIRIT WHILES DRUMMING, THATS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE"! Dang! The worse was trying to find a stack of chairs to sit on in 30 seconds. That's the other thing, ever go to a Church to play and all they had was one flimsy wood chair with the skinny metal legs, a CB 700 kit with the toms angled right down to the ground, and a Camber crash ride and hats. AND usually that Church's drummer thinks hes the best thing on drums and hes going to show you.

this is the worst for me im at this district meeting didnt even know i was gonna end up on drums but the praise team leader was like"yo you gonna ply for us or what" so whatever i go up there then he is running thru the song with the organist and praise team and im tryna ask like what song are yall singing! he said"get on the drums man we bout to start and runs up on the stage. then on top of that! the organist was like"can you count it off" so i count it off and totally start playin the wrong beat EVERYONE looked at me and there was mad drummers in there. then on top of that this lil kid comes up before offering "ay lemme get offerin man" so i get up he MURDERS BYRON CAGEs BLESS the lord" so the choir director comes up AFTER I ALREADY rehearsed the choir song and tells him the song cuz shes over here thinkin i cant play on beat.moral that i learned that day was HUMILITY im 20 yrs old! got embarrsed by a 13 yr old lol every lil fill he did EVERYone was jumpin up and down goin crazy ill never forget this day!!!

No, how about you rehearse a certain set of songs, get all the accents and the band researsal is TIGHT and you come to church as a unit, ready to "Kill" and the MOM says, "the Lord is leading me in another direction". And picks a song like "Khumbiya..My LORD"....Then we all just play the song with no feeling at all....then as a "GET BACK" to the MOM we all start taking SOLOS in between the song and he looks at us like, "WTH"...ROTFLMBO......LOL

I went to this church once and beside me was this really tall column...well I tried to get up to move my monitor closer to me and I tripped and I though the column was planted not to move. Then the thing fell over and ther was some flowers on top of them thenthe flowers fell onto to pulpit and at the same time they were introducing our group and the singers and organist looked back at me and I was laying on the floor....I laughed all the way home....

I wouldve yelled, "what are yall singing!!" if nobody answered before it "got all quiet". U barely see "HGD" anymore because theres too much dumb stuff goin' on these days, that dont make sense.
