Greetings Fam! This is actually my first post in the drum forum, but I have been a long time reader of different posts and have enjoyed them to the fullest. Now I'm calling on some of you all to help me deciding on something....
Our church is in the process of building a new building and we're looking to get new musical equipment, including drums. Since I'm the drummer, I have been taking it upon myself to do some research on what would be a nice kit to buy. I have looked at all the big names like Yamaha, PDP, Mapex, and Sonor. The only reason I didn't look at Pearl is because that's what I'm playing on now and I want to move on to something different. Try a different flavor. Plus every church around here now seems to have a Pearl kit. There's nothing wrong with the company, but I just want to go to something else and stand out from the crowd a bit.
I'm down to two choices: Mapex Pro M and Yamaha Tour Custom. I need help on deciding which would be the better fit. I'm leaning more towards the Yamaha kit right now. But it's hard finding individual drums to buy such as different size toms. The one thing that would make me choose the Mapex is that it has a wider variety of colors. Plus it would be easier to get all the drums I'm wanting. But I'm struggling in my choice right now, lol. :)
I would love to test these kits out and see them in person, but the problem is that the little music stores around here don't carry them. There's one that does carry Mapex, but not the higher end stuff.
So any and all opinions would be appreciated! ;D
Be blessed...

...dude, Mapex Pro M's are hott. What's hotter than that is the Mapex Saturn Series. Get the kit with no matching snare and purchase one of the Black Panther Series snares and you're good to go.
...Yamaha Tour Custom's are aiight. Nothing to brag about really.
-
I don't have experience with tons of kits. A budget for the rest of the guys would help.
I play the new Gretsch Maple Renown kit and it sounds great. Real decent price on these drums.
I also play Yamaha Oak Customs. They cut through real nice and have a warm powerful tone.

Cool. Thanks man. I've heard good things about Mapex, but I just wish I could try them for myself. Or at least see them in person.

Yeah, I looked at Gretsch too. I forgot to list that. I've heard good things about those too.

...alright man. What's your budget and then we can try and help you put something together for your church.
..by the way, what Pearl kit do you use?
-
I forgot to add too that we could probably go up to $1100, or a little more for a shell pack. It's not a big budget, but that's what we are working with. But after doing some more thinking and looking, the Pro M's are looking nice!

whats y'all price $ budget then go from there

...alright man. What's your budget and then we can try and help you put something together for your church.

It's actually a Forum kit. We got that a couple of years after I had started playing for church. And I thought that at the time, that was a good kit to buy, because I didn't know any better. And we let our minister of music at the time talk us into getting it. But I know that the Forum is the lowest of lows, lol. I actually can't stand playing on that kit now. That's why almost anything right now would be a sure upgrade. I'm ready to toss that kit clear out the window! I would use it for fire wood if I could. ;D
Oh, and the budget is mentioned in the above post...

go with mapex pro m or dw pdp line and if you going with some budget cymbals go with sabian pro sonix
-
For your budget range, SONOR FORCE. Hands down. IMHO

...dude, you guys fell for the Minister of Music knows it all thing too, huh? LMBO A lot of those guys don't even know how to work their own ES Motif 8's and they're going to tell you what drums to get. ::) We're glad you're here. As a matter of fact.....for any future purchase.....consult the LGM Fam. first. Even for vocal mics. or tambourines. LOL "Don't" know it all M.O.M.'s get on my last nerve. They're the ones that spend the churches money and then go be the M.O.M. at the church down the street. >:( ;) ;D
...okay so the Pearl Forum shouldn't even be considered a Pearl IMHO. Dude, Pearl Visions kit is also a very good kit so don't judge Pearl by the crappy Forum kit. I can't stand those either.

...so let me get something straight....this budget is just for the drum-kit and no cymbals, right? If so, get the Mapex Pro M. That's a very good kit.
...If you want to be different, sound good and have the kit look like a high-end kit....get the Sonor Force 2007 (100% Birch Shell) This kit is too nasty!!!
...other options for you: Pearl Visions, Mapex M Birch, PDP MX, LX line, Clearanced but brand new Pearl SBX kit (Sick sounding kit. If you find it, buy it.)
...STAY AWAY FROM DDRUM. >:( ;D ;D ;D

LOL @ your comment about Ddrum! I looked at them for a hot second and decided against them quickly! But yeah, the budget is just for the drum kit. Actually the shells----no hardware, no cymbals, etc. Plus I'm going to help out by purchasing a lot of the hardware myself. But the more that I look at my options, the more I'm drawn to the Pro M. But now man, you got me thinking about that Sonor!! ;D Thanks for making the decision just that much tougher! ;)
-

I've heard sweet things about Sonor man! I'm going to be looking hard at those for real. Hopefully I can come to a decision soon...
-
Thanks for making the decision just that much tougher! ;)
...dude, I'm known in these parts for making decisions tough. LOL
...I was talking to bigblackdrummer the other day and he schooled me on something that I've never really thought of and will like to pass it on to you. It's like "Common Sense" but we don't really think too hard about it because we're in a "New Drum Kit Honeymoon." :-\
...bigblackdrummer (Mapex Sponsor - For now :-\ ;D) told me that whatever kit a church purchases they'll need to make sure they get very good, solid hardware. Churches have different drummers play the set and they also need things to hold up and last. Sooooo, durability is "A MUST" in Urban Churches. With that said, make sure that you don't go cheap but neither super expensive on the hardware. Look at the "New Hardware" Thread so that you too, like Yamboy, can do your research on what's been provided in that thread.

It's actually a Forum kit.
Aww, that don't even count - that's the Hamburger Helper of Pearl. You haven't even tried the Filet Mignon yet. *lol*
I'll let the guys give their (http://www.cymbalholic.com/forums/images/smilies-cymbalholic/twocents.gif).

LOL!!!
Yeah our MOM didn't " Dip Set" But he sure likes to spend a pretty penny on a nice organ, pianos, and " Wireless Mics" >:( Then Im stuck with colapsing gear! :-\

You may want to consider the Pearl Export Custom series as well. They have seriously stepped up the quality of the Export series with this one. They are 6-ply maple shells. Maple shells are great for a live setting. Pearl is a great company to stay with despite your experience with the Forum series.
Check out the official site just to learn more about the opitons that you have overall wth shells, hardware, etc. When you shop armed with knowledge, it goes a long way.

...the thing with those is that Pearl never gave them a Hardware Upgrade. They still have the same Export Hardware while the Visions Series won an M.I.P.A. Award for their hardware. In other words....the Visions due to their hardware is their better mid line kit right now and...........the numbers state it. The Maple Export's are in the same category as the Mapex Pro M and the Pro M's are whipping their butts and Pearl knows it. I hope Pearl discontinues the Export Maple and take make it a Visions Maple with the Visions Hardware. It's 2008 and they need to "Export" the Export kit. ;D

hey leave the export kik alone... that's been my baby (1st drum kit) for 16 years now... and it's still sturdy
-
I just got a new Kit at my church... pastor told me a had a 1,500 budget for cymbols and hardware ;D.... which QUICKLY dropped to "OOOO no we can't spend that much..." :-\
ended up getting a Yamaha Stage custom 5 peice with 10" 12" toms and 16' floor tom.... and it sounds GREAT... also got to talk him into buying 1 crash cymbol due to the fact that the previous drummer cracked both crashes so i got a 14" sabian AAX of course i had to by the rest cymbols myself so i ended up getting the sabian AAX pack from Sam Ash for 499...
-
Go with the Mapex Pro M. Its the best buy for the money PLUS you get a free 13X6 Maple snare with it which you can keep for yourself. Listen the M Birch is a killer too, I own one personally. I wanted a birch kit for recording so I got one and man Id put the sound up to any high end Yamaha birch kit (I use to own a back in the day Yamaha birch kit so I know what Im talking about!) Also with the M Birch you get a free tom. My new Saturn Laser Canary Yellow kit should be here this month. And yo! Check out Stagg cymbals!! They are the same as Sabian and Zildjians but for less money... You just have to get to know the different lines, they are totally being slept on.

...that's not the same "kit" we're talking about though. Pearl's New ECX (Maple Shell) needs New Upgraded Hardware if they're going to sell it for the listed price. ;)

I truly appreciate everyone's input on this critical decision I must make! ;D Everyone has had good ideas and good suggestions. I'm not against Pearl, but I just wanted to move on to something different. It could turn out that I end up with another Pearl, but I'm hoping for something else.
So with that being said, I'm now deciding between the Pro M and the Sonor 2007, maybe even the 3007. The one that E.R. brought up is a pretty sweet deal! But I'm still trying to come to a concrete conclusion. This could actually be a very long process, lol. I just want to make sure that I pick the "right" kit and not have regrets later. Because whatever I get, it will be bought site unseen with the exception of the pictures on the internet. I can't see these kits in person. But I can't do anything about that. So I want to make a sound decision and the right choice. ;)
Thanks again for all the responses!!
-
Oh, and throw the M Birch in the mix now too.......... ;D
I'm suppose to be chopping the list down, not adding to it! Lol! But I do appreciate the help! :)

...dude, the "right kit" would be a DW Collectors, Pearl (Maple, Birch) Masters or Reference, Mapex Saturn, Gretsch New Classics, Yamaha (Maple, Birch, Beech) Nouveau Series, Sonor SQ2, Delite or S-Classix, Tama (Maple, Birch, Bubinga/Birch) Starclassics....
...again, we're not telling you to get a Pearl but to me, playing a Pearl Forum is like playing a Walmart kit with a Pearl Logo head so you can't really say you've played a Pearl. LOL That's the truth and not an opinion.
...look man, all the kits you've mentioned are good kits. You're not going to regret it. This isn't the 1920's. You're going to get a good sound with good looks. The rest is up to your playing, tuning and proper head selection.
...Sonor 2007, 3007, Mapex M Birch and Pro M's are good solid sounding kits. Once again, make sure you get "solid and durable" hardware. That's it.
....one more thing.........THE KIT HAS TO MATCH THE CARPET!!!! LMBO

Again, to all those who have given me the variety of options, I appreciate you! But now I'm choosing between the Pro M and the Sonor 3007. I'm going to be thinking about this hard over the next couple of days and surely come to a decision very soon. When I do, I'll let you all know what I came up with! :)

Agreed. Sonor Force 3007 is definitely a sweet kit! I will be buying one in the future, for my house.

Yeah, E.R. can slip that Delight to me for a low fee! ;D
The colors on the Mapex line are so nice. I love that blue, although it is on the M Birch line. The midnight fade on the Sonor as well. The only thing is that I like to have a hint of wood grain showing. And I can't see any in the midnight fade. But all those colors are lovely! Jesus help me!!
