In most of the black churches I've been to, The women outnumber the men. Why do you think this is?
-
That's a good question. It seems to me that women are very passionate about their relationships period on all levels. Friends, spouses, God, etc. I do however see more of a change in that in my latter years of my life. It's kind of like you used to didn't see men shout as much in church as women but now I am starting to see more men shouting now than I ever have.
-
In my church the men out number the women significantly.
-
Women always out number men in everything, workplace, church, grocery store, choir, classroom, etc. Just they way of the world. Take notice.

Not the one that you opened for in ATL... (not calling any names though ;) )

Men don't go to church in general. They've written a book about it. I think it's called Why Men Don't Go to Church. It's pretty interesting. It's a good read. I had a copy of it and of course, a man lost it. LOL!!

...because men think they already know what to do and don't want to be told what to do. Real men dont submit!!!!GRUNT...GRUNT....SCRATCH...

Good point. Men and women have problems submitting to God and to man. Could it be that we think we know more than God?

Go to the early service!!!I love football too but football season doesn't last the entire year!!!

HERE'S WHY...
MEN LIKE TO WATCH FOOTBALL AND DRINK BEER! SO....
Instead of having 1 men's choir or male chorus, churches should have 2. They should dress in FOOTBALL UNIFORMS (with helmets) and "duke it out" to see who goes to the SuperMaleChoirBowl in January. Whoever can squall enough to make the most women shout -or- whoever can sound just like R. Kelly but still be anointed WINS!
THEN...to satisfy the beer drinkers....serve communion in those beer cups they use at football games (the little thing that sits on your head and you sip through the straw whihc is right at your mouth).
NOW....we still want to promote "salvation"...so, the idea of a lady in a hooter's outfit reading the announcements is out. Sorry guys!

On the real.....
One men's month at GPHMBC I did one Sunday (as chairman) where the men all came in khakis and their favorite football team jersey. Consequently, there were more men there that Sunday than there had been since the 1st Sunday we went in the new building.
It's like all the homies called their partners and said "yo dude....li'l herm wants us to sport them jerseys Sunday...rep yo set homie".....
There was MOSTLY blue and grey (Cowboys). What was funny (and I did NOT plan this) is that most men who had on jerseys for the same team sat together!!! Pastor hated the idea of them wearing khakis and football jerseys, but he was glad (in the end) to see the fellowship (like jerseys sitting together) and the OFFERING!!!!!!!!!
He preached "Whose Team Are You On" (from the scripture about no man serving two masters). It was "nice".
The climax of men's month was the following Sunday and.....the women came out more than we did! Go figure!

I was attempting to answer this question, but as I was typing it, I realized that my "theory" really sounded ridiculous and would subject me to some major grilling and teasing, so....
I started looking around online for another way to say what I was gonna say, and lo and behold, I actually found an article that had the same exact theory I had!!! LOL! :D :D :D
Here it is (http://www.churchformen.com/forwomen.php)

EXCUSES!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think church should be "changed" to make men come! If you can't come just because Jesus said so, then you're already headed in the wrong direction! Real talk.

I don't disagree with you. Anyone who has listened to or read me knows that I tend to deal with hypotheticals a lot. I'm not saying these are the reasons men don't come to church. What I am saying is that they are possible reasons, and valid enough to consider.
My first thought when I opened this thread is that men (primarily those who aren't born/raised in church) don't see a lot of opportunities to participate because most of the ministries ARE nurturing ministries. And a lot of men aren't down for that kinda stuff, especially not those who are unchurched.
From a sociological perspective, the church does tend to be a more feminine environment.

For real?
Which adds to the myth that if you shout or praise God, you're a punk or want to be a woman. It adds to the old addage that "real men don't cry".
It would seem to me that all men would therefore go and join my granddaddy's church where you can't preach, lead, or do anything if you ain't a man. Seeeeee!!!! Another reason why men CAN go to church. The traditional Baptist church, especially! LOL!

Ummmm, no... you took that in a whole different direction... lol. The article clarifies what I meant by a "feminine environment."

I hear ya, Rue. But if the sanctuary was pink and white? OK! I could go with you. But most churches are like purple, mauve (the "man-pink")....I just don't see that!
And to say that MUSIC is included in the list of feminine things in church? I think whoever said that must have been looking for an excuse not to go...and that was the best they could offer at the time.
I honestly did the "jersey" thing as a fundraiser, period. I was clever. I knew it would work and it did. But to literally CHANGE CHURCH just to make men come is absurd IMO.
I think you should, just because the Lord said "Forsake not". Everything He tells us to do is NOT something we "like" per se, but doing what He says in spite of how we feel is how we unlock blessings...right?

I think men tend have a different need when it comes to church. Most men need strong leadership along with a strong message. Thats why you see men in the "Nation" in abundance. I think some Christian Pastors can be to weak. Men need to be discilplined. A man needs someone he can respect. Someone that will sit you down, if your in leadership & he finds out you're not living right, & doesn't care if you're tithing one dollar or hundred thousand dollars. If you look at your strong Pastors, you will find men in abundance.

I don't want to be under some *in Arnold voice* girly man, but I DEFINITELY don't want to be under a task master!

Put a preacher on the football field and they'll come to the game late. Face it. Men (myself included) can be stubborn. We don't do what ain't in our hearts to do. Sadly church ain't in a lot of their hearts. THERE WILL BE EXCUSES FOR NOT GOING AS LONG AS WE ACCEPT THEM OR PACIFY THEM. Maybe my disgust on this subject is showing....as for some of the ones I know, get them drunk and they'll tell you the whole Bible from cover to cover....but sober they're like the boy on The Omen. It's a sad thing. It's disgusting. It angers me deeply!
