Until Fred's remake, I couldn't STAND 'This is the day'. >:(
Now, I ONLY like Fred's version. 8)
Agreed. He made that joint Fiya!!!
Well, that's how it played out in my young mind anyway. I know someone in here knows exactly what I'm talkin' about.
I also got tired of that Shirley Caesar track (I say track cuz it wasn't really a song) about Shoutin' John... well, not so much that I was sick of the track, but moreso that I was sick of every ninja that ever listened to it talkin' about "HOL' MAH MULE!! HOL' MAH MULE!!" Made me wanna tell them to shaddap and saddown.
I also dont like those "Sister Act" type songs or those old baptist songs with 5 guitar players on one track.
And i hate funk style gospel music
I can't stand a lot of Quartet songs because they all sound the same. Same progressions, same words, same everything! That's funny. I love Quartet songs (Mighty Clouds of Joy etc.) THey have some tight pocket.

"Rough Side Of The Mountain"
"Struggling & Strainin"
When I was little, I'd occasionally be forced to go with my grandma to church. She went to one of those ol' Baptist churches like the ones the comedians make fun of, with Dr. Rev'um DoRight. Dude had a Jeri Curl too I think.
Anyway, it seemed like everytime I went there some old dude would fire up this hymn that sounded like some sort of death march...
He'd be like "HH-IIIIIIIAAAAAAAYA KNOW DA LAWW'T, HE WEELLL AN'SA PRAYYAYAYAYAYAAAAAAA" and the rest of the congregation would join in moaning a slow-motion version of what he just said, one syllable at a time, each syllable lasting like a full 10 seconds at least...
HHiiiiiii-IIIIIIIIIIIIIII-AAAAAHHHHYAAAAAHHH...
(deep breath)
NNN-KNOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU-uw-WUUUUUUUHAAAAA
(deep breath)
Da'AAAAAHHHHHHHHH
(deep breath)
LA-HAAAAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWD
(deep breath)
WEEEEEEEEEE-uuuuuuuuuhhh-EEEEUHYUHHHHHHHHHHHLLLL...
...and so on and so on. And there were MULTIPLE "verses" of this "song". Good LORD that was ETERNITY for a kid. They all sounded like the dead unearthed itself. And I just sat there like "WHAT THE HAM SAMMICH?!?"

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus by timothy wright. dont get me wrong, I love jesus but I cant stand that song
I can?t stand most male chorus/quartet songs
OH YEAH!?
Well you should be at the Black History program at GPHMBC every year when the lady over-dramatizes the "Story of Dr. Watt" and how he came up with thatgarbagemusical artform. ;D

I can't stand that song by the Florida Mass Choir about the old lady that gets put out of her house and winds up on the park bench. That songs offers no hope at all yet it was requested every day on the local gospel station here.
That's not the whole story. In a newer song, there's an update given about the old lady. After she gets on the park bench, some guy comes along from the government or something and gives her a house. See? The hope is there, I guess that was an attempt by the choir to "Soap Dramalize" gospel music.

I can't stand to hear
"Strugglin and STrainin" "Mama Drug me to Church" and "I'm Smoothin up the Mountain" Just don't let me hear about the Canton Spirituals right now
Now I have always liked hold my mule, but I REALLY CAN'T STAND "you tellin lies but I know the truth" I DISPISE THAT SONG!! >:( ::) ?/? >:( >:( >:(
I just thought of another one I don't like very much...
Valerie Boyd's Get Me Out, Jesus...
UGH!!! I can't stand that song!
For musicians GET ME OUT JESUS is the only song I could play with confidence in the beginning stages. Lol.
Is this the song where someone talks about looking at someone's pager and it had the code 69 on it?

I can no longer stand "I Won't Complain." Not because of the song itself, but when someone tries to sing it, they try to sound just like the record. Screams and all.
"Never Would Have Made It" - Marvin Sapp is slowly climbing the "Church songs I don't like" list right about now cuz everybody and they grandma sing it. >:(
WOW....Yall are surely dissing some songs.....LOL. ;D
Don't be dissin' my boy Timothy Wright on Jesus, Jesus, Jesus...lol
Anyways....thats you opinion and I respect it.
There is one I don't like and that is "Walkin' Around Heaven" Especially since Patti LaBelle re-did it.
That song gives a false view of heaven because you are not just going to be walking around heaven.
And another one somebody said: "Cooling Waters" - I do not understand the rationale of that song. What does cooling waters have to do with the Gospel??? ?/? ?/?
Yea, this goes right up there with "His Eye is on the Sparrow". ::)
Ditto!!!
So it's not the songs but the wannabe Diva performances you don't like?
And as my homegirl said, ANYTHING by Jeff Majors makes me turn the station immediately.
And another one somebody said: "Cooling Waters" - I do not understand the rationale of that song. What does cooling waters have to do with the Gospel??? ?/? ?/?

What kind of song is it?
That ain't a gospel song.
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :oAre we still talking about gospel songs? I think Yall just wanna get my threads locked :D :D
Yes it is.
Slippin and slidin'
Creepin' and hiding'
YOU'RE BEEPIN' AND CREEPIN'
Ya gotta get on out. :D :D :D
Kinda makes me rethink putting my songs out there. You aim to bless lives but end up turning stomachs.
Okay....I really TRIED to like Israel's "I am a Friend of God" but couldn't!
I cosign on that Timothy Wright "Jesus Jesus Jesus". Good grief, what is it with these little old lady story songs? Oh and cosign 2 on Jeff Majors. Even my father (who has conservative music tastes) has such disdain for that man and his coma-inducing "music" and personality.
I don't know why but Israel's "I Am Not Forgotten" makes me grit my teeth.
And I have come to detest "Alabaster Box" because I have heard it sung sooooo many times with soundtrack and no emotion.
Trinitee 5:7 "There He Is" because it's repetitive and sounds like an R. Kelly song.
I have to admit I like that Alvin Darling song "NO BODEEEEE! NO BODEEEE! BUT THE LAWD!"
(slinks away into corner)
What kind of song is it?
I'm sick of Jesus Oh what a wonderful child at Christmas time.
I'm sick of Jesus Oh what a wonderful child at Christmas time.and Go tell it on the mountain
I'm sick of Jesus Oh what a wonderful child at Christmas time.
and Go tell it on the mountain
Indeed.
Depends on the version. :-\
Ok, as much as I don't like the song, my wife is looking for, "I won't Complain", for one of her students.
They're looking for the version with a male lead (who's introduced by a woman).
Don't look at me like that, that's all the info she gave me. :-\ :P
GASP!!!! YOU OLD HEATHEN!!! ;D ;)
In reference to "Cooling Water"
Like he said, if it's not a gospel song, then what is it? I looked up the lyrics, and it's a song about baptism. It talks about being delievered from sin, and has the line "They took me down in the water". Sounds like baptism to me.
That's the original by Rev. Paul Davis.
That's the original by Rev. Paul Davis.
"Rough Side Of The Mountain"
"Struggling & Strainin"
"Because Of Who You Are" (only cuz it was being oversung)
"I Will Trust In The Lord" (again cuz of oversinging)
Most of Keith "Wonderboy" songs
That's all I can think of right now.
JESUS OH WHAT A WONDERFUL CHILD IS STILL THE CHRISTMAS ANTHEM.
"I won't Complain" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow": I don't really understand this song...I mean, I know the scripture but the song is kind of weird. It seems to be more about a bird and less about God. It's not that I don't like these songs, moreso than they are sung TOO MUCH. Everytime someone sings a solo it is one of those songs. It doesn't help that people have to yell their way through the songs, too. Why so loud?
You mean Rev. Paul Jones
JESUS OH WHAT A WONDERFUL CHILD IS STILL THE CHRISTMAS ANTHEM.
Yes, thank you.
THAT I'M SICK OF HEARING!!
and Virtuenow, you like all Keith Wonderboy's stuff, but not Yolanda Adams?!? WOW, not even "In the midst of it all"? That song sends me in just typing the title.
Well, how about Beau Williams' "Holy Ghost Work Me Till I Sweat"? I think he watched "The Steve Harvey Show" too much, sounds a lot like "When The Funk Hits The Fan", lol. I'd never heard it before until our minister of music let him come to our church and sing it as a special guest. Everyone in the church was aghast! Looks of disbelief, those us in the choir were trying not to laugh, but when he brought that whistle out, it was all over!
**Gasps** at T-Block, I love "Rough Side of the Mountain", and all of Keith Wonderboy's songs!
**Gasps** at T-Block, I love "Rough Side of the Mountain", and all of Keith Wonderboy's songs! You know me, I can take it back sometimes! Anyway, I don't like Yolanda Adams songs. She sounds like she is oversinging--almost yelling throughout all of her songs. It is so annoying. I also don't like that style of singing where people do alot of runs and yelling. Very annoying and unreal. I don't think of that as singing.
Anything out of the hymnal with five versus!!!!
**Gasps** at Virteunow, I can't believe u love "Rough Side Of The Mountain". Why the heck do you purposely wanna go up the rough side of a mountain? That to me is insane and idiotic.
And Keith Wonderboy need to change his style cuz if you heard one of his songs, you pretty much heard em all.

Work me till I sweat?! Are y'all aware that today is NOT april first? Stop playing!
Let alone unbiblical. Why climb mountains when I know someone who can move them. :)
And can someone please post a link so I can hear "Work Me Till I Sweat." I have to hear that song. That title leaves so much opportunity to wind up on the "Quiet Storm." I can see it now.........Shhhhh, turn the lights down girl. Check this out. WHAT? I thought that was a slow jam.
BTW, "When The Funk Hits The Fan" is my JAM!!!!!!!! I'm going to find some kind of way to burn that song to a CD.
Let alone unbiblical. Why climb mountains when I know someone who can move them. :)a tru ting man!

That reminds me of this song the Sr. Choir used to sing long time ago. "Lord, don't move my mountain, but give me the strength to climb, Lord, don't take away my stumbling block, but lead me all aroung"
Here's a clip on Amazon's site to hear a sample of it...but I think it's best if you can hear the whole song (although just hearing the hook was enough for me to turn the station :) )

I hate 90% of tracks where the artist talks for a long time...
That goes for Israel, Kirk, Kurt, Carlton... if you're gonna talk, put it on another track so I can at least skip it. After you've heard it 59 times if it WAS ministering, it stopped at about the 5th spin, but I still have to endure it and it sounds more rehearses every time, lol.
Let alone unbiblical. Why climb mountains when I know someone who can move them. :)
Wonderboy has that gospel quartet feel. It is very inspirational to hear. It takes you "down home". You can't get that feeling and that same jump w/new age music. It's just different. That hand clapping, foot stomping, make you wanna run around the church kind of music. (*hint, I'm giving u a chance to change your mind).

I totally agree with you... I hate when they don't make it a separate track.
And in the 10% would be the James Hall tracks where Kevin Bond (or James himself) is ministering... I could listen to those over and over... actually, I think I know all of them by heart... LOL.
I also like the ones Marvin Winans had back in the day... can't remember the name of the CD, but the one with Perfecting Church and Now Are We.
Now are we is that Jam. The yong lady that led that Kayla Parker went home to be with the Lord not to long ago. I like worthy is the lamb off that one to.

I'd have to say "I Won't Complain". Only because it had been done to death. If someone starts to sing that song, I don't care how well they can sang, I'm taking a water or bathroom break.

I was in Vallejo a little while ago and this guy did a mix of that song and "Thank You Lord For All You've Done For Me" (don't really know the real title), it was pretty good. If only he wasn't trying to be a vocal acrobat during most of the song.
Anything that John Legend sings makes me want to run in the opposite direction.
I like that song. Especially the john legend version

Kevin Bond is HILARIOUS on James Hall's stuff...my favortie quote is on the introdution of 'We Are At War' whe he says.........."DEMONIC PITBULLS" I was in tears the first time i heard it
I don't like any of those Shirley Caeser "Momma" songs. :D :D :D
I was thinking about "No Charge" one day and how kids I know would react to it. After the mom finishes the chorus the kid goes, "Cool! So um...about that allowance."LOL, so true.
One song that annoys me is "The Struggle is Over" by Youth For Christ.

I was just talking about this song to one of our deacons, last night.
*singing*
Never wanna hear it.....again.
>:( >:( >:( Thanks, bruh...that version will be stuck in my head all day today. :D :D :D

"We Fall Down"....not for the song itself, although, it can get annoying. When I think about that song I think about a church I visited. The praise dancers decided to dance to that song. :o ?/? ::) More power to ya if you can change the movements but the dancers at that church did not. Fallin down and getting up over and over again takes a lot of energy and some dancers got tired :D :D :D

Oh yea, before I forget...I know I've said this like a year ago in a post, but there's this song (I don't know the title)where there's this part that goes, "the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone's connected to the hip bone, and so on..." That Trin i tee 5:7 song Listen.... not only do they play it too much up here Still :P, the music is just Annoying! I definitely don't want to "Listen Here!!" >:(
I usually like a lot of Trinitee's songs, but since the radio station here in Philly seem to only have 4 Top Favorite Songs going on for the last Year, it plays everytime I happen to turn on the radio!! lol
You mean "Listen"? With all the songs Trin-i-tee has had, "Call His Name", "My Body", etc you'd think they'd go look for them. :-\ They do the same thing with Vicki Winans. It's a shame because they slighted her Christmas album. They played the single and after the Vicki Winans contest was over I didn't hear the song again. I wish they would add, "Oh What Love" to the playlist. I think I'll email them about it later.
Right!! Vickie's Christmas album had a Really pretty song on there. they played it once and I never heard it again on praise 103.9. I work in the building where Praise 103.9 is located. Radio One been firing a lot of those ppl. Hopefully they get a new staff that'll put some variety in the playlist!
variety on the radio? Good luck with that.yeah i know.... setting myself up for disappointment :-\

Wow. I wonder how often they go through interns. :-\I wish someone would step in there and get some things stirred up at the station!
I was thinking about interning there because I want radio to be my back-up career (and to help bring more a variety of music), but since I haven't done any interning for my plan A I've decided against it.
Faithful is Our God- Hezi..... that song is just too long and repetitive and overplayed. and everytime the youth choir sings it, they sing it for the entire length of the song
COSIGN!!i forgot about that song lol

Shifting the Atmosphere (but of course you knew that already)
Show Me Your Glory- E Pugh
Broken But Im Healed - Byron Cage
if the ask me to play this one more time during offering. -_-this song must come on Praise 104 like 20 times/day
I love Broken, But I'm Healed. Although I think it's kinda weird to be both broken and healed at the same time, but hey.... whatevs... :D^^^
Wait, what God in Me fiasco???
And I agree on how very annoying The Jesus in Me is.... my goodness gracious if I NEVER hear that song again, it'll be too soon. Same with I Need You to Survive. *sticks finger down throat*
That song. YOu know. "It's the GOd In Me. I"m so fly, I"ms o blah blah blah". That song, IMO, is a disaster.

I must have missed that discussion. =\
I think I did hear it in context. The type of language used in the song is just too ambiguous for me to subscribe to. I was very surprised (but then not) that it was so handily received by the general christian populous.
To answer your question of "why?" probably for the very reasons that you guys explained away in your discussion. =\
Ummm... have you heard the rest of the song?? O_o
lol, but I'm not a big fan of that one, either. Sounds too "marriage"y.
I just thought it was funny how you were asking "TO whom??" when it's right there in the next line.
It's like how your father gives you away to your husband.
I just find the song boring. :D
I LOATHE "God has not forgot" by Tonex. FORGOT???? PLEASE USE PROPER GRAMMAR IN YOUR SONGS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just wanna slap Tonex every time I hear this song.....
"He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it." - Matt 10:39
Giving away your life is relinquishing the things you like to do, that take time away from serving, for the things of God. He wants to use our time, lives, and resources to advance His kingdom, but often we're unavailable because of crap we're involved in that sap our energy and our time. It kind of the same concept when one is married, they give their lives (the old single lifestyle and activities that accompany it) for the spouse.
You know, I'm about 99.9% positive I've said the same thing on LGM. I even asked once "am I the only person who can't really get with a song that has a blatant grammatical error?" I'll see if I can find that post. But yeah, I totally agree with you. I really hate that song, and only for that very reason.
That reminds me of one of my pet peeves. I meant to ask Nessa and Jonathan if they have the same issue, but I always forget. No matter how hard I try, I just cannot get into songs that have blatant grammatical errors (such as "God Has Not Forgot" or JH & VOC's "If You Praise Me" (hate it)... and there are plenty more on the list.

James Fortune = YIKES.
>:(
Some of the church songs that I really dont like are:
Wade in the water
This little light of mine
any other slave type songs
Song Artist Reason
ANY SONG BY................................ISRAE L HOUGHTON He never mentions Jesus by name and just yells random words into the mic
He is Worthy Hezekiah walker It just repeats the same 3 words with an overly noisy beat.
I need you now Smokie norful I H8 THE SAXOPHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd be okay with James Fortune if he didn't TALK THROUGH THE ENTIRE SONG!!!!!! I'm like "aye brah...shut up!"
Never was a huge fan of Mary Mary...wife loves them...the majority of their songs seems to be programmed by a drum machine or something.
Because of who you are by Vicky Yoie...it was cool the first 1,000 times...but now let's leave it alone.
Nobody Greater...too much air time...
It's the God in Me....ya know...any "gospel" song that is played on a radio station during a slew of rap and r&b songs
drake song -> Lil Wayne song -> Marvin Sapp song -> R. Kelly song -> Nicki Minaj song -> Mary Mary song
aint that the majority of hez's songs?i can take Faithful is Our God, it's Grateful that gets me. That song was strangled by it's own reprise, lol.

What can separate us from the love of Jesus;
'He will keep His promise,'

'nobody like Him, oh.'
Just if you were wondering. Probably doesn't make a difference. Also, "Alive","We Have Overcome", "I Know Who I Am", "Your Name is Great", and "Nothing Else Matters" to name a few. Just so we don't have erroneous blanket statements uncorrected.

Not true. Well, at least, in my case at least. I just thought the statement was a bit too generalized and unfair. Hm, interesting observation. What makes it lazy? Because he's black? Or because the way he plays it doesn't do justice to the style?
The arrangements certainly aren't lazy (more like overly complicated =\)
The hipster in me wants to say that that very thing is what makes him worthy of being reviled, but... I actually like the musical style. And the songs with more meaningful lyrics are pretty good. I think most people consider him more "urban P&W" than "Gospel" artist, though.
I'm not an Israel fan, but I will say this: his formula works for him. He's a very successful artist and has contributed a great deal to modern P&W. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that for this generation, he's probably contributed more to P&W than any other gospel artist.
I dont judge quality in terms of popularity....kim kardashian is popular and makes money as a successful tv personality but i wouldnt call that quality....Justin beiber has defined the tweens of our day but i wouldnt call that quality either.
just to chime in,
If you wanna hear how israel really gets down check out his "Timeless Christmas" there's a lot more to him than "I am a friend of God."
I love Israel. Sometimes it's love/hate, LOL. But he's good, and I believe he's genuinely himself and genuinely a worshipper, which is another rarity.
But as far as his music goes....it ALL SOUNDS THE SAME TO ME.......alternative rock!....a few guitar licks here and there but very little chord progression...and it all blends together blandly
Ummm, first of all, welcome to LGM.
Secondly, I didn't say anything about quality - and I hate to break this to you, but non-musicians (who, by the way, make up the majority of an artist's fan base) couldn't care less about chord progressions. Most don't even know what that means. My comment has nothing to do with whether Israel puts out what you define as quality music (you do realize that that's pretty subjective, right?) and I never mentioned anything about his popularity. My comment is giving due respect to the person who contributed significantly to the introduction of what we know as P&W music as a genre. I'm not a fan, like I said, but I do believe in giving credit where it's due. I believe Israel Houghton is deserving of credit for what he has contributed to Christian/gospel music, not for record sales, 'quality of music,' or number of chord progressions.
Why does him "defining a generation" mean he deserves credit?????
If he didnt define it well then he doesnt deserve credit in my opinion
just to chime in,Luther Mano Hanes had a big hand in the production. I do like this project though.
If you wanna hear how israel really gets down check out his "Timeless Christmas" there's a lot more to him than "I am a friend of God."And I do agree a lotta israel/lakewood stuff sounds the same. But as a music director that sees to the needs of the congregation and not my uber-musical tastes, his/Lakewood's stuff "congregationally" works, and works well.and hes White/Jamaican, i believe.
Ah, now I remember. It's "He Reigns" by Kevin LeVar. Yeah... that song is really spooky...
LOL bc I see what you meant. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
LMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D
LMSocksO I don't think it requires explanation. LOL
*proverbially biting my fingers to keep from explaining it*
Yeah, for the record, I have no idea what ghost lions are either, but it sounds like one more thing to worry about when I'm trying to go to sleep, so I'll pass on the explanation. :D
curious, what is it?
curious, what is it?
Good question. If not 'Hallelujah', then what is the highest praise we can shout unto God?Not to sidetrack things too far, but hallelujah is literally a command or exhortation to praise God. It's like me shouting "Shut the door!!" and instead of shutting the door, you holler back at me " Shut the door!" So, what we are doing is shouting, "You, praise God!" to each other. From Wikipedia, "Hallelujah, also spelled halleluiah, halleluyah, and the Greek and Latin form alleluia are transliterations of the Hebrew word הללו יה (Modern halleluya, Tiberian halləlûyāh) meaning "Praise ye Yah" or "Praise Jah, you people"."

As to what is really the "Highest Praise", I am not sure. It may be that for us humans, simple obedience is the highest praise. However, as far as I can tell, the highest praise mentioned in scripture is found Revelation 4:1-9. I don't think praise gets higher than that!!

I'm probably playing sematics here but in my opinion worship is the highest praise because to me, worship comes before praise. I worship God simply based on who He is and His worth to me. Therefore as I worship God with my life (as you noted) through my giving, living and serving I'm offering God the highest praise which is my life as a sacrifice to Him.I do not disagree :-)
It probably doesn't matter but it looked too good for me to be quiet....LOL!!
So, you're saying when people say 'Praise the Lord, Hallelujah' (or vice versa), they're saying, 'Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord'?Exactly, they are not literally saying the equivalent of "God I praise You" when they say hallelujah, They are literally saying, "Hey all of you people praise God" But I don't think that's what people think they are saying.
stirs pot................is it really necessary? ?/?:D :D :D :D :D :D

Hmmm not stir the pot anymore.....That is the epistemology of the word Hallelujah.....but if we want to get in to sematics then it would be the highest praise because according to semantics people define what a word means outside of the epistemology....the feeling a word takes on or the meaning given to it by the majority is what its "true meaning" is. Okay that was a really academic explanation but #IJSGood point.

Songs I don't like, don't get me started but:
Lord I say Thank You x Lisa Page Brooks
Better than That x Phil Tarver
I won't complain x Paul Jones (I Think)
So meanings of words are not absolute but socially constructed? Or is that just in the context of semantics?
#Ifeelmyacademichelpcoming ;D
I would say in life, that is true also. Think about the N word. Is that what does that word really mean and does it really matter what it originally meant anymore?

Sorry typo! Wow. That was convoluted. ;D But you get my point.
@blyempowered No, I mean what it meant before that. The root of the word is actually negroid which isn't really offensive at all and is a scientific term.
