"The Old Rugged Cross"

When I was young I attended a church that would sing this every week...all versus...and they drug it out so terrible, that I would be nodding off while standing by the end of the song...lol

When I was little, I'd occasionally be forced to go with my grandma to church.  She went to one of those ol' Baptist churches like the ones the comedians make fun of, with Dr. Rev'um DoRight.  Dude had a Jeri Curl too I think.

Anyway, it seemed like everytime I went there some old dude would fire up this hymn that sounded like some sort of death march...

He'd be like "HH-IIIIIIIAAAAAAAYA KNOW DA LAWW'T, HE WEELLL AN'SA PRAYYAYAYAYAYAAAAAAA" and the rest of the congregation would join in moaning a slow-motion version of what he just said, one syllable at a time, each syllable lasting like a full 10 seconds at least...

HHiiiiiii-IIIIIIIIIIIIIII-AAAAAHHHHYAAAAAHHH...
(deep breath)
NNN-KNOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU-uw-WUUUUUUUHAAAAA
(deep breath)
Da'AAAAAHHHHHHHHH
(deep breath)
LA-HAAAAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWD
(deep breath)
WEEEEEEEEEE-uuuuuuuuuhhh-EEEEUHYUHHHHHHHHHHHLLLL...

...and so on and so on.  And there were MULTIPLE "verses" of this "song".  Good LORD that was ETERNITY for a kid.  They all sounded like the dead unearthed itself.  And I just sat there like "WHAT THE HAM SAMMICH?!?"

Well, that's how it played out in my young mind anyway.  I know someone in here knows exactly what I'm talkin' about.

I also got tired of that Shirley Caesar track (I say track cuz it wasn't really a song) about Shoutin' John... well, not so much that I was sick of the track, but moreso that I was sick of every ninja that ever listened to it talkin' about "HOL' MAH MULE!! HOL' MAH MULE!!"  Made me wanna tell them to shaddap and saddown.

I have a few exceptions myself, the Mighty Clouds being one. But MANY of them are annoying at times. Maybe it's because I live in the south...home of the DEEP Baptist Church and therefore home of every Quartet known (and some unknown) to man.  :-\

"Rough Side Of The Mountain"

"Struggling & Strainin"

"Because Of Who You Are" (only cuz it was being oversung)

"I Will Trust In The Lord" (again cuz of oversinging)

Most of Keith "Wonderboy" songs

That's all I can think of right now.

OH YEAH!?

Well you should be at the Black History program at GPHMBC every year when the lady over-dramatizes the "Story of Dr. Watt" and how he came up with that garbage musical artform.  ;D

In between every verse comes a dramatization, then they go into "take me through Lord" (the ever-more countrified version of "Walk Wit' Me Lord")!

AGONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Lawd please let them skip over that this year.  I skipped it INTENTIONALLY the year I was chairperson.  Now I'm going in as a guest and I'll be at their mercy!

I'm with ya on this one bruh... my only difference is that I can't mostly ALL Quartet singing.  It should be banned... black marketed!  :D :D

"Never Would Have Made It"

I can’t stand most male chorus/quartet songs, with the exception of “I made it through another day’s journey God kept me here” other than that, down with quartet songs. (Speaking of, one of the male chorus members gone say to me yesterday “We still waiting on ya” I looked and said “waiting on me to do what”  :-\  ?/? and I started laughing.  I can do Dr. Watts meter hymns, before I can do quartet.

Anyway, right off the top, I can’t stand

Cooling waters
Long as I got king Jesus
I have a testimony
Oh sweet wonder (Ricky Dillard)

Well you should be at the Black History program at GPHMBC every year when the lady over-dramatizes the "Story of Dr. Watt" and how he came up with that garbage musical artform.  ;D

If he hadn't come up with that "garbage" musical artform as you so "eloquently" put it, it would not have progressed into the current style of gospel music we have today. How someone could call something that praises God garbage is beyond me.

When I was little, I'd occasionally be forced to go with my grandma to church.  She went to one of those ol' Baptist churches like the ones the comedians make fun of, with Dr. Rev'um DoRight.  Dude had a Jeri Curl too I think.

Well, that's how it played out in my young mind anyway.  I know someone in here knows exactly what I'm talkin' about.

The proper name for those is "Call and Response" hymns. We did one yesterday, we always do one for Black History Month, the congregation just eats that stuff up, I think they just want an excuse to wail and scream without being in the choir, lol. The stuff I don't like is some gospel rap. I realize that it's the new direction gospel is taking for future generations, but I just can't get into it. I also don't like most of Israel Houghton's stuff. I like "I am a Friend of God" and "We Worship You", but that's about it.

I can't stand that song by the Florida Mass Choir about the old lady that gets put out of her house and winds up on the park bench.  That songs offers no hope at all yet it was requested every day on the local gospel station here.

That's not the whole story. In a newer song, there's an update given about the old lady. After she gets on the park bench, some guy comes along from the government or something and gives her a house. See? The hope is there, I guess that was an attempt by the choir to "Soap Dramalize" gospel music. Also, have you noticed Shirley Caesar's new "Shouting John" has only aged 3 years, some 20 years after the original was released? lol.

I'm gonna cosign two and add some more:

1. Cooling Waters ( ?/? ?/?)
2. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus by Timothy Wright & NYFC
3. Uzziah by Donald Lawrence & Tri-City (that song irks my tiniest nerve)
4. Shirley Caesar's No Charge

Just about any song with a spoken story (except Hold My Mule... I love that one)

1. the one where the lady has a car accident and goes to a stranger's house to ask for a closet, and goes in the closet and calls out to Jesus... ugh!

2. Carlton Pearson's one where Mother somebody asks him if he's yet holding on and gives him a quarter... ugh!

There's another one that I can't think of right now... I just hate all those story/songs...

Not that anyone asked, but one of my favorites in terms of lyrics is that one that Marvin Winans wrote for Twinkie Clark... she recorded it with FAMU, I think... isn't it funny, how we've all changed; why I remember if you weren't holy, in the choir, you couldn't sing; and now we go for almost anything... we've changed  The part I love is where she says why I can even remember when, women were women, men were men, and now you can't hardly, you you you can't hardly, you you you can't hardly tell a her from a him....  :D :D :D (it's so funny to hear her do the runs and riffs in that classic Clark style...)

Don't be dissin' my boy Timothy Wright on Jesus, Jesus, Jesus...lol

Anyways....thats you opinion and I respect it.

There is one I don't like and that is "Walkin' Around Heaven"  Especially since Patti LaBelle re-did it.

That song gives a false view of heaven because you are not just going to be walking around heaven.

And another one somebody said:  "Cooling Waters" - I do not understand the rationale of that song.  What does cooling waters have to do with the Gospel??? ?/? ?/?

I said what I said and I meant what I said.

I believe when they play some of those songs over and over and over, they tend to loose their luster or their flavor and they become bitter tastes in our mouths so to speak.

And as my homegirl said, ANYTHING by Jeff Majors makes me turn the station immediately.

I think some songs get so overplayed that people get tired of them (theme from TITANIC, anybody?)

Being an unheard composer you may struggle to be heard, but at least you don't have to worry about overexposure...

I cosign on that Timothy Wright "Jesus Jesus Jesus". Good grief, what is it with these little old lady story songs? Oh and cosign 2 on Jeff Majors.  Even my father (who has conservative music tastes) has such disdain for that man and his coma-inducing "music" and personality.

I don't know why but Israel's "I Am Not Forgotten" makes me grit my teeth.

And I have come to detest "Alabaster Box" because I have heard it sung sooooo many times with soundtrack and no emotion.

Trinitee 5:7 "There He Is" because it's repetitive and sounds like an R. Kelly song.

I have to admit I like that Alvin Darling song "NO BODEEEEE! NO BODEEEE! BUT THE LAWD!"

The reason Trinitee 5:7's stuff sounds like an R.Kelly song is because they've worked with him in the past. R.Kelly and Kirk Franklin produced their first album. I think they still have a connection to him despite Matthew Knowles being their new manager. They even re-recorded R.Kelly's "U Saved Me" possibly as a nod to him? I hear their version on the radio every now and then, but I change it to something else instead.

LOL, I like that Alvin Darling too. What about that beginning? "Di-di-di-did you know that Jesus was the one that died on Calvary?" :o ;D

In reference to "Cooling Water"
What kind of song is it?

Like he said, if it's not a gospel song, then what is it? I looked up the lyrics, and it's a song about baptism. It talks about being delievered from sin, and has the line "They took me down in the water". Sounds like baptism to me.

Well, how about Beau Williams' "Holy Ghost Work Me Till I Sweat"? I think he watched "The Steve Harvey Show" too much, sounds a lot like "When The Funk Hits The Fan", lol. I'd never heard it before until our minister of music let him come to our church and sing it as a special guest. Everyone in the church was aghast! Looks of disbelief, those us in the choir were trying not to laugh, but when he brought that whistle out, it was all over!

"Rough Side Of The Mountain"

"Struggling & Strainin"

"Because Of Who You Are" (only cuz it was being oversung)

"I Will Trust In The Lord" (again cuz of oversinging)

Most of Keith "Wonderboy" songs

That's all I can think of right now.

**Gasps** at T-Block, I love "Rough Side of the Mountain", and all of Keith Wonderboy's songs!  You know me, I can take it back sometimes!  Anyway, I don't like Yolanda Adams songs.  She sounds like she is oversinging--almost yelling throughout all of her songs.  It is so annoying.  I also don't like that style of singing where people do alot of runs and yelling.  Very annoying and unreal.  I don't think of that as singing.

"I won't Complain" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow": I don't really understand this song...I mean, I know the scripture but the song is kind of weird.  It seems to be more about a bird and less about God.  It's not that I don't like these songs, moreso than they are sung TOO MUCH.  Everytime someone sings a solo it is one of those songs.  It doesn't help that people have to yell their way through the songs, too.  Why so loud?

Also, someone said "Cooling Water".  I have always disliked this song by the Williams Brothers.  It's something about the tune and the words.  Israel and New Breed, "We Worship You...You are Good".  One of the most annoying songs ever.  Good words, but I have to pretend to like it- or trick myself into liking it b/c choirs sing it so often.

;) I grouse at church when we play a hymn with 5-6 verses!
Often the Pastor will take one look and say 'Sing Verse 1,3,5'
But since we're doing a Choir processional this Sunday, guess it makes more sense in that case...

Haha, I like your perception of the "Roughside" song T-Block.  You have to know it's not on purpose.

Wonderboy has that gospel quartet feel.  It is very inspirational to hear.  It takes you "down home".  You can't get that feeling and that same jump w/new age music.  It's just different.  That hand clapping, foot stomping, make you wanna run around the church kind of music.  (*hint, I'm giving u a chance to change your mind).

As far as Yolanda, I almost forgot how much people like her; but I'm just not a fan of her style.

I hate 90% of tracks where the artist talks for a long time...

That goes for Israel, Kirk, Kurt, Carlton... if you're gonna talk, put it on another track so I can at least skip it.  After you've heard it 59 times if it WAS ministering, it stopped at about the 5th spin, but I still have to endure it and it sounds more rehearsed every time, lol.

I understand what u saying, and I do actually like the quartet style, if I'm playing the bass.  But, I can't take a whole CD full of it cuz it's like listening to the same song over and over and over again in different keys.  Plus, there is better hand clapping, foot stomping music out that I can listen to other than Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson.  You need to expand your horizons young lady, LOL.  ;)  :D

I totally agree with you... I hate when they don't make it a separate track.

And in the 10% would be the James Hall tracks where Kevin Bond (or James himself) is ministering... I could listen to those over and over... actually, I think I know all of them by heart... LOL.

I also like the ones Marvin Winans had back in the day... can't remember the name of the CD, but the one with Perfecting Church and Now Are We.

**Gasps** at Virteunow, I can't believe u love "Rough Side Of The Mountain".  Why the heck do you purposely wanna go up the rough side of a mountain?  That to me is insane and idiotic.

I think i figured it out if you go up the smooth side theres nothing to grab on to so you almost gotta go up the rough side plus when you get tired or the "Chilly Winds" start to blow you can just hide behind the mountain lol

I'd have to say "I Won't Complain". Only because it had been done to death. If someone starts to sing that song, I don't care how well they can sang, I'm taking a water or bathroom break.

LOL, I've seen some pretty good renditions.  I was in Vallejo a little while ago and this guy did a mix of that song and "Thank You Lord For All You've Done For Me" (don't really know the real title), it was pretty good.  If only he wasn't trying to be a vocal acrobat during most of the song.

One song that annoys me is "The Struggle is Over" by Youth For Christ.

I'm listening like, "God told you what now?  The heck he didn't tell me for?!"    :D

They lied to almost everybody.  There's really no good time to listen to that song.  Or maybe it was supposed to be a funeral song and it went over my head.  Ah well, it tends to annoy me anyway.

"We Fall Down"....not for the song itself, although, it can get annoying. When I think about that song I think about a church I visited. The praise dancers decided to dance to that song. :o ?/? ::) More power to ya if you can change the movements but the dancers at that church did not. Fallin down and getting up over and over again takes a lot of energy and some dancers got tired :D :D :D

You mean "Listen"?  With all the songs Trin-i-tee has had, "Call His Name", "My Body", etc you'd think they'd go look for them.   :-\  They do the same thing with Vicki Winans.  It's a shame because they slighted her Christmas album.  They played the single and after the Vicki Winans contest was over I didn't hear the song again.  I wish they would add, "Oh What Love" to the playlist.  I think I'll email them about it later.

Faithful is Our God- Hezi..... that song is just too long and repetitive and overplayed. and everytime the youth choir sings it, they sing it for the entire length of the song

That song. YOu know. "It's the GOd In Me. I"m so fly, I"ms o blah blah blah". That song, IMO, is a disaster.

Why?

FYI - I think we discussed that song here once before, and came to the conclusion (maybe not collectively, but I don't recall exactly how it went down) that the song wasn't bad at all, but people didn't hear the lyrics in context.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The theme of the song is that you see what you think is success, but nothing they got was got without much prayer and a relationship with God so please let people know that we're nothing without God. I'm cool with that... (and this is coming from a NON-fan).

I never really fell in love with "Give Myself Away" like most people.

Kiki Sheard released a song called "Boyfriend" that is the most blasphemous thing I've ever heard.

Alot of emptyness inside. "Have you ever gave God a chance?"
(As if you're lovin' someone else.) To be your man...He's my boyfriend.
Don't miss out cause I didn't.

He's my boyfriend.
My bestfriend.
My boo.
He is(My everything)

I must have missed that discussion. =\
I think I did hear it in context.  The type of language used in the song is just too ambiguous for me to subscribe to. I was very surprised (but then not) that it was so handily received by the general christian populous.

To answer your question of "why?" probably for the very reasons that you guys explained away in your discussion. =\
Ummm... have you heard the rest of the song?? O_o

lol, but I'm not a big fan of that one, either. Sounds too "marriage"y.

Yeah, I've heard the entire song - a zillion times over... I hated it from the first time to the last... I just think it's a dumb song.

It's like how your father gives you away to your husband.

I give myself away (from selfishness, my old life, my old habits, etc) so that I can be used by God for His glory.

Have I sold you on the song now Layla? LOL!     :D
Title: Re: Are there any Gospel/Church Songs that you Dont like???
Post by: LaylaMonroe on July 10, 2012, 09:25:06 PM
I can't explain it.

It just isn't natural English to say directly to a person that you're giving yourself AWAY - TO that person.... that's not away. I really can't explain it. I just don't think that before that song, there was one human being on earth who ever uttered those words. If I'm talking to you about God, I might say "I gave myself away to God." But if I'm talking to you about you, I would never say "Sketch, I give myself away to you." The natural words to use would be "I give myself to you."

Idk. It just bugs me.

"He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it." - Matt 10:39

Giving away your life is relinquishing the things you like to do, that take time away from serving, for the things of God. He wants to use our time, lives, and resources to advance His kingdom, but often we're unavailable because of crap we're involved in that sap our energy and our time. It kind of the same concept when one is married, they give their lives (the old single lifestyle and activities that accompany it) for the spouse.

I didn't explain myself clearly.

Giving yourself to God is definitely not my hang-up with the song. I have given myself to God, and I continue to give myself to Him daily. I get that part.

I won't try to explain it, because as I said, I really don't know how to articulate it. It's the 'away' part.... and it's a language hang-up, not a concept hang-up.

This little light of mine

any other slave type songs

Song                                                    Artist                                        Reason

Just havin chuch'                           Chester Baldwin                  It doesnt say anything about God. It just encourages being old & black.

Hosanna                                          kirk franklin                          Hosanna meas "please save us" its not Jesus' name as KF says

Stomp                                              Kirk franklin                       what the heck does stomping have to do with Christian living?

Cant nobody do me like Jesus                                        "cant nobody" is a double negative and i means someone can do you like Jesus

They got the word                        MMC or dorthy coates          The bible doesnt say gabriel will direct a concert or that you get shoes

ANY SONG BY................................ISRAE L HOUGHTON        He never mentions Jesus by name and just yells random words into the mic

Love Him like i do                           Mary&Mary                   God is worthy of love because of who He IS not because of your $$$$$$$

Its the God in me                           Mary&Mary                       Same reason as above

He is Worthy                                 Hezekiah walker           It just repeats the same 3 words with an overly noisy beat.

Worthy                                         Smokie norful                WHY DOES HE WHINE SO MUCH.....SING LIKE A MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need you now                            Smokie norful                  I H8 THE SAXOPHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Israel Houghton "Who is Like The Lord":

What can separate us from the love of Jesus;
'He will keep His promise,'
'there's nobody like Him,'
'nobody like Him, oh.'

Just if you were wondering. Probably doesn't make a difference. Also, "Alive","We Have Overcome", "I Know Who I Am", "Your Name is Great", and "Nothing Else Matters" to name a few. Just so we don't have erroneous blanket statements uncorrected.

As well as the alternative rock style he plays.

Very lazy!

I'm not an Israel fan, but I will say this: his formula works for him. He's a very successful artist and has contributed a great deal to modern P&W. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that for this generation, he's probably contributed more to P&W than any other gospel artist.

Yeah I don't get into the technicalities of genres. The only differentiators I use are gospel or CCM (or if its absolutely necessary, inspirational).

Not true. Well, at least, in my case at least. I just thought the statement was a bit too generalized and unfair. Hm, interesting observation. What makes it lazy? Because he's black? Or because the way he plays it doesn't do justice to the style?

The arrangements certainly aren't lazy (more like overly complicated =\)
The hipster in me wants to say that that very thing is what makes him worthy of being reviled, but... I actually like the musical style. And the songs with more meaningful lyrics are pretty good. I think most people consider him more "urban P&W" than "Gospel" artist, though.

Israel houghton is probably biracial....when i first looked at him i though he was mexican

I have several vidoes on my youtube account about this very topic.....the ODR is false.

But as far as his music goes....it ALL SOUNDS THE SAME TO ME.......alternative rock!....a few guitar licks here and there but very little chord progression...and it all blends together blandly

I dont judge quality in terms of popularity....kim kardashian is popular and makes money as a successful tv personality but i wouldnt call that quality....Justin beiber has defined the tweens of our day but i wouldnt call that quality either.

Ummm, first of all, welcome to LGM.

Secondly, I didn't say anything about quality - and I hate to break this to you, but non-musicians (who, by the way, make up the majority of an artist's fan base) couldn't care less about chord progressions. Most don't even know what that means. My comment has nothing to do with whether Israel puts out what you define as quality music (you do realize that that's pretty subjective, right?) and I never mentioned anything about his popularity. My comment is giving due respect to the person who contributed significantly to the introduction of what we know as P&W music as a genre. I'm not a fan, like I said, but I do believe in giving credit where it's due. I believe Israel Houghton is deserving of credit for what he has contributed to Christian/gospel music, not for record sales, 'quality of music,' or number of chord progressions.

just to chime in,

If you wanna hear how israel really gets down check out his "Timeless Christmas" there's a lot more to him than "I am a friend of God."

And I do agree a lotta israel/lakewood stuff sounds the same. But as a music director that sees to the needs of the congregation and not my uber-musical tastes, his/Lakewood's stuff "congregationally" works, and works well.

and hes White/Jamaican, i believe.

I love Israel.  Sometimes it's love/hate, LOL.  But he's good, and I believe he's genuinely himself and genuinely a worshipper, which is another rarity.

One of my FAVORITES. I play that joint year-round.

In fact, all of Israel's studio work is a better representation of his musical capacity than his live stuff. His team writes good MUSIC...but they're usually found on his less-popular projects and not all of them are "sunday morning"-friendly.

But as far as his music goes....it ALL SOUNDS THE SAME TO ME.......alternative rock!....a few guitar licks here and there but very little chord progression...and it all blends together blandly

sounds a bit like "I Give Myself Away" and songs of that ilk...

Why does him "defining a generation" mean he deserves credit?????

If he didnt define it well then he doesnt deserve credit in my opinion

Luther Mano Hanes had a big hand in the production. I do like this project though.

I agree. The simplicity of his "Lakewood Stuff" works very well.

Not to sidetrack things too far, but hallelujah is literally a command or exhortation to praise God. It's like me shouting "Shut the door!!" and instead of shutting the door, you holler back at me " Shut the door!" So, what we are doing is shouting, "You, praise God!" to each other. From Wikipedia, "Hallelujah, also spelled halleluiah, halleluyah, and the Greek and Latin form alleluia are transliterations of the Hebrew word הללו יה (Modern halleluya, Tiberian halləlûyāh) meaning "Praise ye Yah" or "Praise Jah, you people"."

As to what is really the "Highest Praise", I am not sure. It may be that for us humans, simple obedience is the highest praise. However, as far as I can tell, the highest praise mentioned in scripture is found Revelation 4:1-9. I don't think praise gets higher than that!!

I'm probably playing sematics here but in my opinion worship is the highest praise because to me, worship comes before praise. I worship God simply based on who He is and His worth to me. Therefore as I worship God with my life (as you noted) through my giving, living and serving I'm offering God the highest praise which is my life as a sacrifice to Him.

It probably doesn't matter but it looked too good for me to be quiet....LOL!!

So, you're saying when people say 'Praise the Lord, Hallelujah' (or vice versa), they're saying, 'Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord'?

Exactly, they are not literally saying the equivalent of "God I praise You" when they say hallelujah, They are literally saying, "Hey all of you people praise God" But I don't think that's what people think they are saying.

Steelpulz is right. I thought we went over this before on LGM but maybe not.

But yeah, he's right. I think the reason people say hallelujah is the highest praise is that it is the highest praise of all praises one can give. For example, you can praise your children for being obedient. You can praise your employees for a job well done. You can praise friends for accomplishments. But the highest praise you can give is one you give to God.

However, in the way that it has been taught in our churches, as though there are 10 praises you can give to God and hallelujah is the highest one of the ten.... that's not true and there's nothing in the Word to indicate that it is.

Hmmm not stir the pot anymore.....That is the epistemology of the word Hallelujah.....but if we want to get in to sematics then it would be the highest praise because according to semantics people define what a word means outside of the epistemology....the feeling a word takes on or the meaning given to it by the majority is what its "true meaning" is. Okay that was a really academic explanation but #IJS

Songs I don't like, don't get me started but:

Lord I say Thank You x Lisa Page Brooks
Better than That x Phil Tarver
I won't complain x Paul Jones (I Think)

So meanings of words are not absolute but socially constructed? Or is that just in the context of semantics?

#Ifeelmyacademichelpcoming  ;D

I learned this in Communications, but I'm too lazy to find the notes and give a detailed answer. It's something about signified and signifier. If I say "beast", what do you think of? The word beast is the signifier and whatever you think of is the signified. This means that if I say "beast" to 12 people, they're not all thinking of the same thing. Same word, various interpretations. Thus, language and definitions are culturally constructed.

Maybe this is why the Bible says man looks at the outside, but God looks at the heart. He's more concerned with intent than semantics.
