Post by: George Spanky McCurdy on February 23, 2008, 04:42:36 AM
Yo LGM Fam wats gud!

Ive been listening to the same gospel albums FOREVER! I wanted to know if their any new albums out that are musical, mature, and most of all anointed. In my ipod u'll see: Tye (rehearsals and underground stuff), James Hall (1st album is HALL OF FAME), Marvin Sapp (Thirsty,,,absolutely amazing....the production!!....this is what its about right here.....) New Direction (I love my boi Lil Scooter on here, sounds really good), Larry Trotter (Calvin.....another HALL OF FAME), John P Kee (Calvin....HALL OF FAME) LET'S JUST GOHEAD AND INDUCT CALVIN IN THE HALL OF FAME NOW! lol....and last but not least KIM BURRELL - EVERLASTING LIFE - MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GOSPEL EVER! Andrew Ward...Track 6.....man, i think it went over alot of people's heads but the stuff he played on that album was totally next level. Wasnt a roll or extra supa fancy hi hat work, it was sooo different......man o man, lol.....

okay, of course we love Kirk's Records and we aaaaallll love Terry Baker......

but what else is out there yaw? i just wana hear some dope bands.....i wana hear BANDS WHO DONT SOUND LIKE OTHER BANDS, I WANNA BANGDS WITH THEIR OWN UNIQUE SOUND AND BLEND. I know alot of bassists and keyboardists love parris and terry but im tired of seeing clones. I wanna hear something different. so whats new? what records should i go check out?

O WAIT I JUS FORGOT.....I JUST GOT JONATHAN NELSON'S RECORD.....MY BOI MIKE REID SOUNDS AMAZING ON IT, THE WHOLE BAND IS SO ANOINTED AND THEIR ALL GOOD FRIENDS OF MINE, IM SO HAPPY FOR THEM, NOW THEY SOUND LIKE  ABAND THATS BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER FOR YEARS, LOL.....I FORGOT THE NAME OF IT, BUT THE CD IS ANOINTED AND IT WILL DEFINITELY TOUCH YOU....I MISS THESE KINDS OF RECORDS...THE ANOINTING IS LIKE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES NOW....LOL.....peace  ?/? ?/? ?/? ?/? ?/? ?/? ?/?

...well, one of my All Time Favorite CD's is Darwin Hobbs "Worshipper".  Do you have it?  If not, get it.  (Jeremy Haynes on drums and Aaron Lyndsey keys/producing, Darrell Freeman bass, "Buddy" Strong Organ, Johnny "Natural" Najera  Guitars)

..."A Deeper Level" by Israel and New Breed is dope too.  It's different which is really cool and the Worship is great.

...if you don't have them, get them.  If you have them, listen to 'em again. lol

Sidenote:  It's funny how you state that the annointing is an
endangered species right now. :-\  I've gone back to listen
to old Fred/RFC and Israel & New Breed Another Level and
I don't know what it is but those guys definetly had
a "special" annointing in those productions.

I couldn't agree more on the Jonathan Nelson joint! That's one for the collection. Cats will catch on eventually to that one.

The Commisioned Reunion is a must have (DVD and CD).
Deitrick Haddon "Chainbreaker" is one of my faves.
Jonathan Dunn's "Another Level" is a hot one to have.
Lisa McClendon's "Live from The House of Blues: New Orleans" is a slick one.
Twinkie Clark "Home Once Again: Live in Detroit" Doobie Powell and 'nem smashed that!
Bishop Noel Jones presents: "The City of Refuge Tabernacle Choir" (Chris Johnson on drums).
YPJ and FVC.
Last, and definitely not least....get the James Fortune and FIYA "Transformation".

That's a start, chief! Yell back!

i know that this is off topic but the recording i have in mind for you is this jazz group by the name of hiromi's sonicbloom- time control. in fact all of her material is diffrent. but you will enjoy it. her website is http://www.hiromimusic.com/ and here's a sample link for ya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu6agePRtzk  &  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r99Synkmm18&feature=related  . it has transformed my approach to a diffrent style, level and appreciation for music theory.

- Shekinah Glory's "Praise Is What I Do", Disk 2. I've yet to listen to disk 1. It may not be a drummers cd, but ... well, just listen to it.

- Kim Burrell's VERY first project, "Try Me Again". Chris Dave, Teddy Campbell ... that album is smoking, as far as I'm concerned. I honestly don't know much about the pioneer(s) of Gospel Jazz, but I can imagine that cd was well-recieved by all the progressive gospel cats, when it was released.

- Saint Paul Sounds Of Praise. I think they only released on project. It features more than one drummer, but the main drummer was Gerald Heyward ... back when I was his #1 fan. It was released in '95, so good luck hunting that down.

- Marvin Sapp's "Grace & Mercy". Not sure who plays on that, but I fondly remember the disk spontaneuosly combusting in my cd player.  :P

- I don't CARE if it's been mentioned before but... James Hall's "God Is In Control"!! Laaaaaaaawwwwwwd Hav Meeeeerrrcccy! I played that thing so much, my brother hid it from me. I'm the type of cat that will listen to something so many times, that my mind won't process the arrangements the same. The arrangement will start to sound different, lol. I'm very much not kidding. I took my little 10.00 per Sunday money(I wish a sucka would offer me that now...  :D ), and went out and bought another...

- Marvin Winans' "Introducing Perfect Praise". M-A-R-I-O "S-K-E-E-T-E-R" W-I-N-A-N-S!! Anybody whose ever heard that album knows about the last track where each member of the band is given a solo. Skeeter ate that joint up. I remember being in heaven, 'cause after hearing Gerald and so many people like him, it was refreshing to hear Skeeter. He sounded nothing like any other gospel cat I had heard.

....and last, but definitely not least...

- Ricky Dillards New Generation Chorale, "Hallelujah". I burned that disk badly. Honestly, I'm not sure whether I like that album or James Hall's "God Is In Control" more. I don't know who played drums, but I can tell you that, at that time, I thought he was from another planet.

Im going to kick it old school and say (these might be hard to find)  Shirley Caesar: Live in Chicago with Rev. Milton Brunson & The Thompson Community Singers, Kevin Brunson was gospel drummer king back then and its one every gospel drummer should have in their collection.

The Lighthouse Inter Denominational Choir; You Dont Know Like I Know. They were from Detroit and I dont know who the drummer was, some guy with Jerry Curls... I was 13 or 14 when I had the tape and around 15 when I saw them live.

Indiana State Mass Choir - Oh Come Let Us Sing. There was two cd's from them both are must haves, I forget the name of the drummer but I think his last name was Phelps.

DR. L.S. Scott, Power Source. Another must have (really hard to find). This was back before he started doing Old Person worship CD's.  The first two Dr. L.S. Scott (I had the tapes) albums are off the hook!!!!

Ok here's a few that I like...

Commissioned - Matters of the Heart
Commissioned - Ordinary Just Won't Do
Commissioned - State of Mind
John P. Kee - Strength

Overall, Commissioned gave me room to enjoy the music around me as a drummer as well as show me that I am the source.

What ya'll know about them albums. Those are classics. But what about:

- Ron Winans Family and Friends 3 with "Now Are We" and Dana Davis crushin
- Bishop Eric McDaniels Reggie Young and John Peters crushin

But it's funny, all these albums, or at least most of them, are old albums. There really aren't a lot with that same annointing and appeal like it used to be... :-\

I think that Ray Bady plays on the Grace and Mercy CD.

I know for a fact that Calvin Rodgers played on the "Hallelujah" CD - I remember when I got that CD when it was released.  I felt the same way, dude...

dag big black u took it back on us.....ok.......i was lsitenin to James Moore's cd, dnt know the name, but it was Lord Send The Rain, tye put it on my ipod, lololol. yooo he was blazin, and the band was real tight.

yo, somebody mentioned mario.....how bout when i started workin wit puff, he came to one of the rehearsals, and i was like yoooo, u dnt know how much of a legend u are maaaaan, i think i spoke for the whole church/drumming world, lol. i was like yoooo, u r a legend. he was like what? I WAS LIKE YESS MAN, SHUTUP! PLEASE......ACCEPT IT.......PLEASE DNT SAY ANYTHING....LOL.......man it was such an honor to meet him.......he did blaze that album.

u know what i dnt like, i dnt like when a drummer actually blazes a sesion, but u cant really tell because of how the drums are mixed and mastered. So now when i do sessions i make sure im involved with the mixing and mastering, at least asking questions about it.....for Tye's new album, (wwwwhooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa nelly, lololol) the mixing is totally different from the first two albums, it sounds like an rnb more than a gospel feel. im soooo happy with the way my drums sound....i really am.....

but yea i rock wit james fortune......"the blood" man i cried when i heard that....

Yeah I dont know why engineers dont ask the musicians if they're happy with their overall mix of their instrument.  I mean who could better tell you if it sounds good or if they're too loud or too soft, there's too much effect...

I've worked with a few who do sincerly ask if I'm happy with the mix and how my instrument sounds. Sometimes, you gotta ask. It's your project. The engineer is paid to capture YOUR sound. Ya dig?.

I still have the latest Youthful Praise and the last Maurette Brown-Clark album in my rotation. Speaking of great mixes....The Maurette Brown-Clark album is mixed perfectly in my opinion and you have an all-star band with Mr.McQuitty, Asaph Ward, Eddie Brown, PJ Morgan, and Sharay Reed to name a few. :o
