Let me start by saying that I am by no means in shape. And from what I can tell there are alot of musicians who aren't in shape either. I know organists who when they get on the organ, thier stomach is touching the organ.
About a year and a half ago God had elevated me to play at a pretty big church. But with this elevation, I was required to be at the church 5 days out of the week, for rehearsals, which could last for hours, and other things that go on. So between work and church, my eating habits got horrible. Going to fast food places on my way to rehearsal and then right back after rehearsals and not to mention the dinners that would be cooked when we had to sing at other churches.
Between work and the church there was no time for the gym, or excercising or trying to eat right. And after talking to a few of my musician friends they feel the same way. For most musicians, music is life, So a majority of our time is spent doing something music related, so we don't think about that stuff. I was gaining weight and didin't even notice until my Pastor preached "being healthy" to us.
I'm not trying to be funny, I just wanted to share that, because I know I'm not the only one who gets so caught up in music that when I get hungry, theres only time for a $1 Double cheeseburger, then its off to play. I think we really got to get a hold on this because I want to be here to see my kids play (when I have them), and thier kids play for a long time to come!

Most Americans are out of shape. It's just a matter of picking foods off a menu that have fewer fat or fewer calories. It's hard with fast food unless you get a salad everytime. You can get a burger but you don't have to get the fries. Also foods like nuts, veggies, fruits, and cheese..curb your appetite. Once you eat those foods routinely, your body won't crave the carbs/sugar.
-
Very true, most Americans are out of shape, but it just seems like an overwhelming number of musicians are way out of shape. And the fact that our schedules are the way it is, I think that contributes to it.
-
Ay, I don't know about the out of shape deal, but I know that I look good, lol!!!
-
Over-weight??? Prolly cause we think Fellowship and chicken wangs are synonomous...

There's a simply answer for this...FOOD IS GOOD!!!!!!!!
And you know especially being a musician, churches have no problem inviting us over and feeding us before service...lol
-
Thanks for calling me fat.

bah... I`m eating but not gaining weight. What I`m doing wrong? :) Every morning before practicing the drums I`m doing few excercises to keep myself in shape...
-
:) Its me oh Lord.....not my brother, not my sista, not the LGM board, but me standing in the need of weightloss ;D ;D ;D
Guilty as charged. I have also now moved to a bigger church and we have 3 giant screens. So i looked up sunday evening and saw myself on the screen...and i nearly lost the beat... :D :D :D
Its true the lifestyle throws me off exercise and eating healthy....and all of that. My Dad has recently started telling me that even if we in church people are still people and will still say...wow the drummer is huge he should lose some weight....people talk.
Besides that we need to shape up our bodies/Gods temple. God is excellent and detailed and i believe that we need to be as close to that as possible. we are ambassadors for Christ so we need to ambassadize well
I see Big mike is slimming down. I met him a year or so ago and we took a pic together. he is way bigger than me. looking at him now i know i might just be bigger than him and all that gain in just one year....so i say its me oh lord. its me

Being a Diet Technician and a musician, I feel ya pain but there are ways around it. You can start by waking up earlier and cooking your own meals to last you throughout the day. While at work choose healthier items or snacks...the problem isn't the chicken that Mrs. Gillacutty brought...it's the amount of chicken you ate. We as American or musicians...use the excuse that we don't have time in our schedule but we never attempt or try to make time. I'll stop right here before I really get started.

I think that it has to do with the church,
Yes, most ppl know that fast food and certain other foods bad (in excess),
but the church just doesn't preach the health message! I'm not talking about
just sermons from pulpits.
Sometimes we can take some of our efforts off music and try and get some
programs goin in our own church.
My church has intramurals (between our church and other churches)
We have Health fairs once a year too. I'm sure there are
much more things that can be organized as well.
we can minister to our brothers and sisters by helping them
improve their quality of life.
-
Over-weight??? Prolly cause we think Fellowship and chicken wangs are synonomous...
lol... they do feed as well...

hmm and all these years i thought they were just showing their appreciation!!! lol ;D

yup church members do that all the time because they do not want to pay what you are worth and how much work that you have to put into your playing.
They preciate ya as a sign of escaping the money situation.
Well I got something for ya.
I am a musician and I know based on information that you can lose the weight and I have some information to give to the music fam.
1. Go to the Gym if you can because the weight is not going to remove itself. If you have light resistance weights at home and workout videos then you fine.
2. Your body has take the following: Fish Oil, Fiber, Fruits and veg.
3. When working out take you body weight and multiply it by 0.36 and it tell how protien you have to take
4. Set up goals and a training log to help lose the weight and meet you goal.
5. Take supplements but before I take anything I would check with my doctor first but if everything is ok then go for it.
6. Take a colon cleanse because in order to get rid bulid up waste you have to take a cleanse.
Now as far as the word "diet" Don't consider it as a diet. Consider it as a change in your life.
GOD Bless

I agree with 90% of what he said. In our career field, we don't encourage supplements...most supplements state "if taken in conjunction with a good exercise program and good eating habits you'll notice results." If you have a good exercise program and good eating habits, guess what, you'll see results. When setting up goal, make them realistic...instead of I want to lose 30lbs by the summer, you could say i want to lose six pounds a month. If you do the calculation it's pretty much the same thing but 6lbs in a month compared to 30lbs by the summer...six sounds a lot easier. As far as protein, the .36 is supposed to be times your body weight in kilograms (i think.) The formula is your body weight divided by 2.2 equals your weight in kg.

Thread of the Week!!!!

Can't answer this one!!! ;D

I have a double chin.
-
...I'm currently eating a Triple Whopper with King Size Fries and a Medium Diet Coke. I'm trying to watch my weight. ;) j/k
-
Did you have to mention a tripple whopper?
I'll be having that for lunch now.
-
Well, I am having a bowl of clam chowder and a hefe-weizen, and will most likely hit the gym later this afternoon to burn it off...
Not all musicians are overweight, just the ones who choose to be. Or it may be a genetic trait... :-\
-
bah... I`m eating but not gaining weight. What I`m doing wrong? :) Every morning before practicing the drums I`m doing few excercises to keep myself in shape...
Maybe you're getting too much exercise from playing the drums. lol! j/k! ;D
I'm not a drummer but I think that the drums takes the most energy to play. You're using your whole body, to play. My fiancee, Jay, and I were watching an AWESOME service the other day on DVD. Everyone was really getting in praise, esp. the drummer. I told Jay that it looks ie it takes a lot of energy to play the drums. I'm not sure if I have as much as that drummer. lol!
Why are so many musicians overweight? I know diet and exercise are a reason.
I think one reason is a lot of us are sitting down and playing, while the rest of the congregation is standing up during worship and dancing. I've noticed that I've gained some since I joined the worship team almost 1 1/2 yrs ago. I noticed one reason is I'm not getting as much exercise b/c I'm sitting down playing and I don't get to dance, close my eyes, and raise my hands, in church anymore. :(
Peace! :)

I don't think that you lose fat by standing up and worshipping in church :-\. Just get of the couch and hit the gym or do some cardio...

Really simple....We overeat. Plus we eat the wrong things....LAY OFF OF THE FASTFOOD...to those of u that say's it's not that easy...If I can do it, you can also. GET A BAG OF FROZEN CHICKEN BREAST AND COOK THOSE FOR THE WEEK. As of around 1-4-08, i don't eat fastfoods, AT ALL. I try to go to the gym at least three times a week and do cardio work. I'm 5'10, 300lbs, BUT WITH THAT, I also play semi-pro football...if not for that, I would get down to a lower weight...If you want to see ur kids and family, you have to take better care of ur bodies.

I think most musicians are on the heavier side because we worry more about are craft than our health...

For some that may be true but they are some might have personal issues that they have to fix or figure out.

This is a really cool thread. It seems like everywhere I go, people are feeling the "get in shape" pinch. At my job, at least half of the employees have started health plans. I'm looking into joining my local gym and getting a personal trainer. Everyone's saying "do it for the kids." I am a big kid, and if I can't keep up with my little ones when they get here I think I'll be more upset about it than they would. Fast Food is the down fall of society. People are so busy now that home cooked meals are becoming extinct. Anyway, no one forces the food down our throat, which means it's ultimately our choice. Let's get on our health grind.
-
I think black people in general are overweight. BUT at church it's worse because we feel that eating is the one vice that we have that isn't really a sin. As a people we've eaten our woes away over the years, especially during slavery. I think the difference then was that although we were eating hamhocks and pickle meat and food sitting in grease and gravy with bread and that pot liquor we were also in the fields working our tails off. But not, we eat and sit down.
I've just lost almost 20 pounds and I didn't realize how big I had gotten. I also didn't realize how poorly I ate until I stopped. The biggest thing to remember is there's like 20 different things you can do to lose weight, not just diet and exercise. A diet is for life.
What helped me is:
1. It's what you do 90% of the time that makes the difference.
2. There's a difference between trying to lose weight and trying to keep it off. In the first you do whatever you have to do and in the second you just maintain.
3. Don't eat seconds.
4. Eat smaller portions.
5. Eat snacks. Don't save up, you'll eat more that way.
6. Eat fruits and vegetables big time
7. Exercise more often for less time or less often for more time.
8. Don't go around telling everybody you're on a "diet". They'll be waiting for you to fail unfortunately. Just let people see the change take place.
9. Don't eat fast foods which means you'll have to plan ahead. Don't run out of food. Make sure you have groceries or else you'll go out ot eat.
10. Get that one safe food item that you can eat anywhere. Like a salad.
11. Reward yourself in other ways. Not with food.
12. Replace the things you loved with other things. If you take away all dessert you're going to miss it. Replace it with a non-fat smoothie or something. Or give yourself one treat every two weeks. If you're really a sweets junkie you mat not be able to handle that. Only you know.
13. DRINK WATER. After you've been drinking only water for a while when you do try to drink a soft drink it'll curl your lips anyway.
-

No it's 0.36 times you body weight. Example: your weight 200lb x 0.36 = 72 grams to remain you weight but if you are setting a target weight like 180 then take 180lb x 0.36 = 64.8 round up 65 grams.
When you weigh yourself yes you divide by 2.2 to get the weigh kg but you dont have grams of protien needed to lose the weight and tone your body.
Also remember do cardio guys thats important when doing and learning you craft :D

Guys, U got2 keep balance in your lifestyle..
I haven't been a proactive athlete for almost 3 years now, but I try to jog at least once a week.
I also carry two very VERY heavy bags & go all over with them.
I run around at every opportunity I get..
Finally, I've subd the usual tempting biscuits with ProVitas ..now I know I can finish a whole double pack & its no 1's business: 3/ 4 crackers =1 slice of bread i.t.o Kjs.
I also drink flavored H2O instead of the fizzy drinks..if not, then I love Sprite Zero, Coke Lite & all other dietary drinks..
People always think I'm crazy (more especially because my physique is not what people would classify as "outa shape")..but I just tell them straight up that :
1) I drink the stuff I drink coz I love it, tastes nice 8)
2) Has added benefits of very lil to no sugar at all! ( unlike al he fizzy drinks which are just an accumulation of glucose :P)
Simple changes in lifestyle can reap tremendous results :)
Start today NOW!! & U'll be in shape like MY shadow..lol ;D ;)
-
I'm kind of skeptical of the dietary drinks with the artificial sugar. The stuff has caused cancer in Lab Rats. I stay on the safe side and stay away from that stuff.

Is Coke Lite & Sprite Zero included?
Well, I'm sure flavored spring water is not like that.
Either way, everything seems to have its disadvantages..
No weapon formed vs me will prosper if it means these things cause cancer.. :)

Im in shape! Round!!!

ITS BECAUSE MUSICIANS LIKE US LIKES SOUL AND FAST FOOD!!!!!!!! ;D
-
Im in shape! Round!!!
hehehehe...nice 1 bro..
QC, are you a ghost then? ...lol
-
I have always been active, when I was younger I ran Track, lifted weights,I could do near 375 pound bench presses, I could run many miles also.Average day was 9 to 18 miles on the road running also speed work on the track, and 1 hour on the weights.
I use to lift very heavy..........today I am older, but I can still lift a ton, I go out and put miles in also.
I think of life this way........we as musicians and singers, need strong hands, stronge lungs and heart for singing and dealing with stress.
Being out of shape just isn't for me.
If a person has bad knees and can't run the miles, then pedal and exercycle.Just find something that works.
I know my drummer works very hard,so you need good set of lungs and strong arms and hands.
Years ago I learned the musicans are in a sense athletes also, we have to make moves on guitars, drums and keyboards like an Olympic athlete in sports.
To be the best on our instruments we should be in shape...........have you ever heard an out of shape singer who's 50 pounds overweight ?.....it's just not the same, they are puffing trying to suck in air, and need a ton of reverb to hide their voice.
I say, lets all get in shape, we'd play better and enjoy life more.
