The Bubingas have a much punchier sound in person. Very clear articulation. I have played them before and I own a Maple Custom. i love my Maple Customs but I think the Bubingas may have the advantage in today's music scene. Full tone with a shorter sustain and plenty of low end while having a nice clear high end.

Just tapped on the Bubinga/Birch Performer Sunday after church at Guitar Center. I played them then the DW Collector Series next to it and my wife even heard the difference. She said there was more body in the sound of the Bubinga/Birch.

Dude there is nothing like Tama's Bubinga drums!  They sound amazing.  But because I'm a yamaha fan, I still say go with the absolute series!  Get the beech if you can before the year is over or catch one used.

...the Bubinga/Birch Kit is the truth.  I like it a lot more than the all Bubinga Shell.

...I'm actually starting to really like Yamaha's Birch Custom Abs. Nouveau but I would get it with a Maple Custom Abs. kick. ;)  That's just me though.....and Teddy Campbell......and Steve Gadd. lol

I think I am the only one on here with a Tama Bubinga Snare. I will say this, It gives me the sound I've always dreamed of having in a snare. Its got a nice deep kick to it that I just love. You can feel it.

Ditto. Seriously!!! I messed around on a DW kit and then the Tama B/B kit next, my wife said the B/B's had to be more expensive since they sounded better.

You sure you are JFunky and that you just made that comment??  :-\ :'(

Once I get my Sonor's and sell the Ddrums...I will be looking at getting a secondary kit for the house, It will be a Tama Bubinga or B/B kit. Definitely.

...yes.  I don't like the all Bubinga Shell anymore for the toms.  All of that extra resonance on the toms can get kind of annoying....for me anyway.  :-\

Gotcha. I think the Birch does do a great job of bringing the Bubinga Depth to Life.
Now granted, when I speak about my secondary kit, that is in the distant future. Definitely not anytime soon. lol.

Yes. I prefer the B/B.

What would be even better:
13" B/B snare
14" Bubinga snare
10" B/B Tom
12" B/B Tom
14" Bubinga Floor
16" Bubinga Floor
20" Bubinga Kick

I love them. just not in a small snare/small tom. They have a little too much resonance and low end for those sizes, IMHO.

After getting the absolutely ridiculous price quote from Yamaha on the Beech set, I may be looking into getting a Bubinga or B/B kit by Tama. Because of the Beech being a special order set now Yamaha is adding an extra 15% upcharge. I wanted to choke that guy when he told me the price I would pay at dealer cost. I can imagine what it would cost the regular customer for this drum set.

...you need to start calling the 5 Star Drum Shops....ie (Memphis Drum Shop, Forks Drum Closet, Columbus Percussion, Explorers Percussion or Drum Shop etc.)  All of the dealers are listed in M.D. Mag.

...drums2go Orlando Fl. doesn't have any Beech Yammy's so that's one less call. ;) ;D

NO in my case. They each are very nice sounding kits.

I however like to here the drum sing. The resonance on bubinga is not overbearing. The birch simply shortens the resonant frequency a bit and gives a slightly different tone to the lows.

Bubingas and Pearl Reference series have a very similar tonal length IMO. Bubinga is a African hardwood like African Mahagony just more dense (harder)... it has a deeper, punchier tone. More crisp articulation.

Even check the Guitar Center stores. Have them check all through their chain.

Forks Drum Closet in Nashville is another place to definitley check.

in comparing my snares, masters mahogany to warlord bubinga, sabe is exactly right. i would also say that bubinga doesn't have the ring that the mahogany does.

hey suga, funky and sabe gave sound advice on where to look for the yammies, but if it doesn't work out for you, your second thoughts are spot on.
