Title: ::: Thought process of a master drummer on building a solo. :::
Post by: j_kay on March 13, 2008, 05:14:42 PM
Here's a video excerpt of Dennis Chambers' Master Drummer DVD.  He goes in depth explaining his thought process on how he builds a solo.  As a side note, you will need Apple's Quicktime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) to view the video.

Check it out (http://www.theaxiomproject.com/evan/dc.mov) (the words check it out and Quicktime are hyperlinks)!

Ay, I called D2G and spoken with Michelle - she said that they haven't ordered it.   They're also waiting for the Steve Gadd Masterclass DVD that Hudson released.

Guys I am amazed that sometimes we get amazed by info that has already been given and pointed to through study that was already advised. Several of us have said these things and given material reference to this exact concepts. Personally I feel very much confirmation in my direction as a musician/artist but I worry for the surrounding landscape.

Will this clip, DVD and other instructional material, advise, wise council, and deep informative conversation fall by the wayside as others have here?
The advise from all the "greats" is consistent and quite frankly God given understanding through established action. yet we don't really seem to be listening.

 :-[

I am really looking to be motivated by this group but... folk have got to open their eyes and ears to recognizing the truth.

(...slams the door)
however I do expect viable feedback/conversation on this

The hungry don't have to be told or convinced to eat. However, those who are not, will by-pass it and overlook it like someone with a filled stomach being offered a full-course meal.

Frankly, the most you can do is drop the knowledge. People who are going to really do are inactive only because lack knowledge of what they should be doing. The rest will be motivated and inspired for the moment, only to slide comfortably back into their seat of small thinking and mediocre results.

...all yall can do is drop the knowledge and share fellas.  Just because people don't post on these type of threads doesn't mean that they're not reading 'em and writing ideas and things down to add to their practice regimen or thoughts.  Trust me, cats read this stuff.  Some things may be over their heads and some things they take in like a sponge.

...if I were to sit in on a Steve Smith Master Class again.....I would shut up and listen like the Chinese Culture does when a Master of the Arts or elder is teaching.  Sometimes people get intimidated by the dialogue on some of these.....what I like to call.....Mature Threads.  Just FYI. ;)

*Closes the door gently*  ;) ;D

The kind of teaching, mind-renewing, seen in this clip is why I go to clinics and why I buy DVDs and why I this DVD and all the others produced by this company will find their way into my collective knowledge base.

Thanks for the post J_kay.

'preciate the post j_kay, but I do have one question.

Does the thought of "Seeing Colors" during a solo seem a bit over the top?

Perhaps he experiences synesthesia (read: having synesthetic perceptions).  What do you think?

LOL  :D

Perhaps he experiences synesthesia (read: having synesthetic perceptions).  What do you think?

But doesn't synesthesia usually come in the form of either seeing numbers or letters in color, or seeing colors due to being on some sort of hallucinogenic drugs.  I also thought that the natural condition was usually pretty consistent.

When I initially watched the video I took him as basically trying to say that he is in an extreme zone during his playing  (When your brain starts to perceive things are slower than their actual rate).  Like Being in the Matrix (sorry could not resist)

But, when he actually said that he sees colors from time to time I started thinking...hmmm.
But thanks again j_kay for the video clip, and I will go off and educate myself.

Now I can tell that this video

One more thing....please don't misconstrue my question for trying to take anything away from Master Chambers.  I had just never heard of anyone saying that they saw colors while being in a zone during playing.

I'm sure that there has to be some documented case study where someone experiences it with sounds, too.

I also deciphered from his statement on the DVD that he is in an extreme zone, but maybe the colors could be correlated to having synesthetic perceptions.

This is good dialogue, man - let's take this to the PMs.

Music should paint a mental picture. Music is also a spiritual doorway when done in earnest. that transcends time/space. I personally have experienced it. It is simply the "Zone." High-end athletes experience it often... it really is similar to the scenes in the movie, Biker Boyz... certain things blur, certain things are in slow motion.

Sports psychologist teach athletes how to get to this "place" of mind over matter through Visualization. What the mind can perceive the body can achieve IF they connect in unity at the correct time. Heightened awareness is the key.
