You know, it's obviously not that women can't play, but why are they always so stiff?

I saw the same thing in that Cora clip. Their is absolutely no fluidity. It's ironic considering you'd expect women to ooze grace and fluidity...

In any case, she can definitely lay it down.

In actuality women move and are a lot more efficient in their movements than men. When you lock at female martial artists their is not some big wind up factor. In fact whenever you see "wind up" type movements demonstrated it is usually characterizing a clumsy quirkiness in the particular individuals athleticism. Focused and efficients is the nature of the active female. The mere nature of their flexibility doesn't call for large movements.

Efficiency can eventually reach the point of rigidness. When people look at you, part of what they feel is what they see.

Take a cat like Aaron Spears - He ain't the most skilled cat around, and his technique leaves a lot to be desire ....

...but the type of energy he brings to the table moves many people. Their are a lot of technical giants that I wish would loosen up more.

I think their is middle ground that you can reach where you can still be efficient, yet not come off as robotic and without passion.

Coming from a background where technical perfection is god, I grew bored with it...'cause you can become so obsessed with details(the trees) that your playing can lack substance(the forest)...

....and the amount of time it takes to aquire great technique - you can, without realizing it, make that your number one priority.

true... But if more church/gospel and urban drummers would take that time and make that focus then their would be reproduction of dare I say better musicians on drum set.
We have to be better players in order to reach those deep seated areas of the mind and Spirit. Folk walk around with their "feelings" in their sleeves all day lying to themselves and all around them about "what they FEEL."
FEELINGS are generally topical in the way that we most times view/use the terminology. Making a heartfelt impression that could be life changing... an experience takes Know-how and intent and selflessness in co-operative. We both know that know is logical and sterile and hard-t-come-by.... but we all want to go to the best doctors, don't we?

Well, feelings exist, and someone touching you, musically, on an emotional level is a-okay, as far as I'm concerned. Feelings are what make us feel alive, and if we were stripped of them, imagine how dull life would become? The detriminent with emotions comes in when people start to live by them.

Even when people have spiritual experiences ..... true spiritual experiences, their is still an emotional reaction.

However, what it seems like is, both of our points of views are valid, and the combination of the two is the key. I'm not against effiencey and technique...

...just when the music seems to suffer because of it.

True. Agreed.

I was just pointing out without saying directly the way so many live for the 'oooowwwwweeeee factor'. In saying topical/surface, I tried to infer without offending, shallow/facade/flava-of-the-month.

Emmanuelle Caplette is serious. Skill, feel, tone, musicality. One day I hope to play as good  :).
