I suggest that you check out the collection of music theory posted by T-Block in the "General Music Hangout", section.

Many other people have contributed to this site in their time and talent, and that's one of the most beautiful thing to experience.  People helping others to grow in the area of music.

If you wanna start from scratch, I'd say that's a good place to start ... right here!
                       God bless you,  BroAllan  :)

do you have a keyboard or piano?

Find something you lie to listen to, and pick up different parts of it. Pick something easy, please. Then repeat with another song.

Put it in a spot where you'll just sit at it, almost everyday/. Mines in my living room. and get your radio set right next to it, and start picking up songs.

Extra credit. If you have anybody who can sing around, tell them to sing a song, and try to pick it up.

Itsa much better plunking out wrong notes at home than in the front of the service. Plus it'll help you. You could sing some songs yourself too, but if someone else sings it, they'll sing it in their key with their style, and you'll have to learn it as they sing it, not neccessarily as you know it.

I used to get moms to sing a few songs for me, and it helped. Then since I had the time to learn it at my speed I could get the whole thing, and not just the piece that you catch on the fly in service.

You hit on a very important point that could either make or break your playing..

For all my playing life, I've had very limited opportunities to play with other people singing (save for the cds)..

Most of the songs sung at church were a bit depressing to play when I was playing at church because I found the style I had learnt the song in was different to the manner the people choose to sing it..

Nonetheless, I enjoy singing the way I want & being able to accompany that with the keyboard.

But if you'll be playing at church , U just have to have some1 sing for you, unless if you can mimic the singers at your church ;)
