Title: BRING BACK THE "CREATIVE" SOLOISTS!!!!!!!!! (part 2)
Post by: Bruh Kell on March 31, 2008, 02:00:40 AM
I started this as a new thread so as not to hijack the other thread.

I'm curious as to what songs y'all think would be a good one to bring back.

Here's what I'm 'bout to start workin' on.

1) I will make the darkness light.
2) Mighty Long Way
3) I belong to you (Rance Allen)
4) For once in my life (Rance Allen)

Never heard of any of them...  I have to do some thinking on the "bring back" songs.

The correct name of #1 is "The High Place".  It's still in heavy rotation among female soloists in Memphis.

You mean you've never heard of "Mighty Long Way(z)"?

And I thought so too.

The only one I've heard of is "The High Place."

And I gotta tell ya, for that song to move me again, the vocalist would have to do a few unexpected backflips in the middle, return to the mic, sing the third verse in tongues, cry, sing in Latin, and cover 3 octaves....

And even then, I'd probably STILL be bored.

For me, it's one of those songs where the lyrics will ALWAYS be a blessing, but that doesn't mean you wanna hear it every other week.  :-\

So what do y'all suggest?

I mean I'm a young guy but I know not to jump straight to "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" everytime I get the mic.

But at this rate what do I sing?

I bet it mattes where I am!

I don't know your vocal range, but I love it when people sing little-known songs from popular artists.  For example, Donald Lawrence's "Usher Me" and "Lord, I Try" (I think both of those were on the Go Get Your Life Back CD) are both great songs for a solo, and they weren't released as singles, so a lot of people don't know them.  On a side note, "Usher Me" is a great P&W song, as well.

I also think you can't go wrong with an old hymn.  Even if you do sing a more common one, if you make it your own, and kill it, you can kinda make it your signature... you know, the song people WANT to hear you sing whenever you take the mic.

In Atlanta, I think everyone pretty much agrees on who the greatest male vocalist is... he is young and trendy, and can outsing anyone I know, nationally or locally.  But, his signature song is "Tis So Sweet."  The first time I heard him sing it, when I saw him telling the organist that's what he was gonna sing, I was like  ::) *sigh*... but he KILLED IT.... and to be honest, I don't want to ever hear anyone else sing that song if it ain't him!

Same goes for a well-known female vocalist in Atlanta... her signature song is "Let Jesus In" (though I'm not sure that's the name of it).... Anyway, I brought her in to sing that song once, and she told me that she regrets ever singing it because now, that's the only song anyone in Atlanta will ever let her sing.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can take a simple hymn, make it YOURS, and be set... whether it's a "creative" song or not...

I've been REALLY feeling "Only What You Do For Christ" lately! Next time I sing a solo I think that's one that I am going to sing. You guys have been giving some great suggestions. I do agree with Herman that there are some songs I'm sick of hearing. If I hear the words "I've had some good days.........." one more time I think I'm going to scream!

Here's my problem with THAT song.  It is one of the classics...one of the greats....but it's not in the hymnal (well, not the burgundy Baptist one I'm used to using...LOL)!

All I know is...

You may build (some kind of cathedrals)
And then...You may do "something or other"

That won't sound too good if it's sung that way!  LOL!

I'd like to hear someone solo "Be Grateful" by Walter Hawkins. I heard Kim Burrell attempt it on TBN a while ago, and boy it was on POINT! I love that song.

*Following LaRue....*  "Be grateful, because there's someone else that's worse off than you..."

When I get finish, I'm starting with..."because the Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need. He lets me rest in the meadows grass, and He leads me beside the quiet streams."

I agree with you all.  I like "Changed" by Walter Hawkins.  I think going back to some of his old recordings and picking up songs like "LOrd I'm a Pilgrim" and "Be GRateful"....for everything you've got (I'm right behind LaRue).  I like the idea of finding songs that really are different, but speak of your own experience and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Don't just sing a song because it is popular! Everybody don't(int) have the same song! My song, at some point, should be something that bubbles up out of my spirit and spills over and makes me sing.  Sometimes, people make requests and they are the ones to be blamed!

I'm not a vocal contortionist, but I've sang "Mighty Spirit", "Mighty Wind" & "Morning Medley" at churches that I've visited.

I cosign with LaRue.  A traditional hymn can sometimes have the most powerful effect.  I've heard some bangin versions of "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "Blessed Assurance".   "The Lord's Prayer" is a challenging solo that needs a good piano accompanying it.   "Beams of Heaven" is a nice song.  Some solos that I think are worn out are
"God and God Alone"
"Alabaster Box"
"I Bowed on My Knees and Cried Holy"

I love any Hawkins song.  Tramaine has a lot of good solos.  One of my favorites is "I Still Want You" from the Live album.
