Title: V7- Question

Why is the 5th note usually omitted. I am confused.  Please help?

I'm not sure I would agree that the 5th is usually omitted on a V7 chord.  However, I can explain why.  After the root, the most important notes are the 3rd and the 7th, because they determine the harmonic quality of the chord - major, minor, etc.

Exactly. You don't need the 5 to have a dominant chord, but if you omit the 3rd and use the 5 instead, then the chord could be minor, dominant, or suspended. You wouldn't know for sure, because the 3rd is missing. It'll then depend on the usage.

Basically because it is not really as important as the root, 3rd, and 7th.  As long as u have those 3 notes present, the 5th doesn't make any difference at all, except maybe a fuller sound, LOL.
