Title: Baptist Church
Post by: JustBecause on April 21, 2008, 01:58:24 PM
I have NEVER been a member of a Baptist Church... I am now... But I am GOING CRAZY!!!

It is nothing like what I am used to... This is a Baptist Church but they follow the FULL GOSPEL (whatever that means)... But anyway...

My dilema... I have NO IDEA how Baptist Churchs operate... And it is killing me... No matter what I do its wrong... (My background is Pentacostle, Holiness, Non-Denomination) This is an EXTREME culture shock... I am used to things getting done when they need to be done... I asked questions about how things are done I NEVER get a straight answer... Maybe I ask too many questions... I dont know...

I am eager to work with the ministry... But I need some guidance when it comes to working with the Baptist...

HELP!!!

Can we get some details!?

Was any of this covered in the new members class?

How long have you been attending before you joined.

Now I understand why some churches require that you attend for 6 months before you can join, therefore you cant say that you didnt know what they are about and how they operate.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;" (Philippians 4:6)

Did you NOT read my post... I did all of that... I just want to know how a baptist church operates... As I stated before I have NEVER been a member of a Baptist Church before...

Caint really give a detailed explaination without going too much into the story... I just need to know what to do when I want to work in a specific part of Ministry... Is there some type of process I have to go thru... What can I expect?

I'd be careful not to characterize your issues as solely relating to it being a Baptist church.  Having said that, many church organizations tend to be more tradition-oriented in their approach to administration, whereas others have little to no structure at all and do things in the name of "the spirit leading them".  I'd suggest getting to know the vision of the church.  Everything done should be in line with the vision of the pastor.  From what I recall, you're still in new members class, so perhaps some of the answers to your questions will surace there.  If not, that would be a great forum in which to pose those questions.

Two words:  RED TAPE (as in any denomination for that matter).

What ministry do you wanna be apart of? Ask someone in that ministry how you can be down. If you dont know who is apart of a certain ministry, then ask a deacon or the pastor (if he is apoachable) aand they will direct you to who you need to talk to

Two words:  RED TAPE (as in any denomination for that matter).

RED TAPE

You gotta go through this person to get to that person to get another person's approval, which actually comes from the first person you went through but jumping through the red tape to get to them was required.

Then, they gotta make sure it's in the book (not the Bible, mind you) and send you back through a few hoops and then it either gets done or not.

IRT the fine PRINT... :P...

Nah I wanted to work with the youth ministry from the get go... I was told that I didnt have to join the church in order to work with the Youth... Now I am being told that I HAVE to... well I didnt want to give up the opportunity to work with them... So I joined... I guess I should have read the fine print  :-\

Man I was just excited to work with the youth again... If you know what happened in NYC with the youth ministry you would understand why my heart is for the youth...

They even surface, too. ;) :D

So sad; yet so true; at least in my experience. Sister T'll probably have a different take on it, though.

I have been Baptist all my life (although I have been accused of secretly being COGIC).  I am not sure what the shock is but for me I noticed most Baptist Churches love hymns(know all the hymns), stay all day (and love the fellowship); eat good-volunteer to serve; love Sunday School (it is like Church all by itself).

1) You are undercover COGIC, so nothing you said really mattered!  ;D

2)  STAY ALL DAY?  I need to visit YOUR church!  Baptist folks I know come IN looking at their watches and saying "Y'all hurry up and get this thing going now...I got stuff to do!"

LOL!!!

I've been Baptist most of my life and with my former churches, I'd agree with you. However, at my current Baptist church, we don't sing hymns. We have hymnals in the pews, but have NEVER opened them.

Also at my current church, we don't stay all day. Bishop gets usout pretty timely. Guess that's what happens when you do 3 services back-to-back.

As far as the red tape thing, I think it varys from church to church. There was a lot of red tape at a couple other churches that I have served, but my current church is ran like a business, so you have no choice but to go through proper channels. It's usually one person, and matters are handled expeditiously.

In response to Nakia's question:

I just need to know what to do when I want to work in a specific part of Ministry... Is there some type of process I have to go thru... What can I expect?

That question is a matter you should take up with the church you joined. No 2 churches, Baptist or any other, abide by the same guidelines. The process you must go through has been developed by your church, and they can help you with that answer.

My current church is not like any other Baptist Church that I have been a part of. Things are ran very smoothly. I have been spoiled by excellence. Some of the other curches required the okay of specific people, or a deacons meeting was held to make decisions. At my church we just don't have so much red tape.

Me too. I can sing a whole lot of them from memory. The church where I was raised did hymns every Sunday, and even the choir would sing them. When I was MOM we did a "hymn of the month". Singing a hymn the entire month encouraged people to learn the song.

I'm use to not singing hymns because we have an outstanding time of praise and worship. I do miss the hymns and wish that they would sing them more, but I've learned to be content in whatever state I find myself.  ;)

Well I spoke to the pastors of the churchand all is well...
Come to find out that I was misinformed as to how things operate...

From the information I received from them...
I will be okay in the minsitry...

So now I am basically waiting instruction...

"When having done all to stand, stand therfore..." ;D
