I couldn't be bothered taking my Export so I took my gigging/travel kit instead. Was also a good excuse to test the camera
on my new phone.  ;D

Ay Fred, Thanks for the pics.

That Razor Crash sounds like a Hi hat Cymbal. :D I played one at this church a while back.

It aint even about the kit man.  It's the groove applied to the kit.  I've done a 4-hour gig with a kick, snare, hats, and 3 cymbals.  I got more love from folks that night than I have with my ENTIRE kit.  And I've got a lot of stuff.

Also, I did a recording on an old Pearl Export kit that a studio had set up.  I just used my snare, my hats, and one of my crashes along with theirs which were old and tarnished.   That kit was beat up and beyond vintage.  But the engineer was such a genius with mics, effects, and his mixing ability that you would have thought I was playing a Master's Custom kit made out of Tamo wood.

I'm sure you laid it down and did your thing.

fretai03, nice "power square" setup (even though it's a 4-piece w/aux snare). Good to see proper hi-hat positioning. Everything looks tight and efficient.
Make it do what it do!

Thanks BigFoot, you pretty much answered BBD's question for me.

I really do focus on sound because I have limited choice about gear. I have figured out that there are ways to get a good & decent sound out of my Ashton kit, which is why I'd rather gig with it than my Export.

JFunky: what, pray tell, is the "fad set up"?

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I think its that your toms are flat. Cause when I saw the pics I was thinking the same thing!

Thanks Sabe, the setup is the fruits of your labour. Especially the hihat placement. All the info you've been sharing here on LGM about kit placement etc is what I have been adjusting to over time.

Hmmm... Aesthetically, angled toms make me feel like my wrists are pulled back onto my arms & my wrists feel restricted from full motion. I made the conscious decision towards flatter toms (Took forever tho cause I couldn't get the toms to the right height) because it "feels" more natural to me & I get full motion out of my wrists.

If its the latest fad to have flat toms then I guess it is... but my intentions were never because its the latest fad (I didn't even know it was a fad) - I will certainly be using flat toms well after the fad has died out.

My aim is to have all the toms at the same height as the snare. Something which I picked up from Jojo Mayer, although his toms are tilted to suit traditional grip, but they are still the same height. The closer I get to the "one height" the more natural & comfortable it feels.

...man if you're comfortable than "do you".  Jojo's are not quite even with his snare but they are low and have a slight tilt.

...so is this what you're going for?  (Bill Bruford's set up)

Hmm... Yes, that looks uneven. On the Secret Weapons DVD is where I saw the toms & snare at one height.

That Bruford setup looks pretty cool. Yeah if you could imagine that height with the setup I have above...
