I am getting really discouraged here. My P&W leader just sent me a song by Israel and New Breed that we should start prepping for. It's called "Deeper".
I wanted to get the songbook but when i saw the sheet music, i just got so discouraged. This is stuff that is really above my level. I can read music, understand time signatures and note values and all that, but i cannot sight-read well enough to play along with the song book in front of me.
I really want to nail this song but if i do it by ear, i KNOW i may not get it as well as the pianist plays it on the CD. :(
How do ya'll do it when you have to learn a potentially difficult song?

If I remember correctly, Israel's songbooks come with the chord notations above the notes, right? If that be so, then learn the chord progressions and add some fillers here and there. Voila, song learned. ;) 8)

Yeah that is definitely true. I always get this way when i have to learn a new song. My church doesn't stray very far from CCM stuff so when we do have to do some more complicated stuff, i get all flustered and worried. I will go ahead and order the songbook. Plus i can read through the sheet music to see what kind of fillers i need to add.
I feel so much better. Thanks.

I take it section by section. And just like sjon said, those chord symbols above will help you out even more. Anytime I get a piece of music in school, I automatically go through the whole thing and write in chord symbols. Most of the students don't, but I do because I'm a harmonic learner.
I can read the notes good, but seeing the chord symbols above help to reinforce the notes to me. I know if I see a Cm above a chord, then I see the notes C, E, & G on the staff, chances are the Eb is in the key singature so I know to play C, Eb, & G. They also help me to remember the song better cuz I can use the symbols to learn the progression of th song.
