As a drummer, do you think you could still hold it down with just a: kick, snare, one tom, one ride cymbal, and one crash cymbal?
Or do you need the double kick and his entire family to make you feel secure to get the job done? 8)
-
I can hold it down with less then that...
-
all u really need is bass hi hat and snare. maybe a crash...
-
I play all the time with just a bass drum, hi hat and snare....or bass hi hat and conga ;)
-
I did kick, snare, ride the other day. It was sweet. Still made it groove.
-
There are times when I just don't want to bring all the stuff that we drummers tent to have. I have a big set, but I rarely use the whole set at one time.

conga??? u play it wit sticks or wat?

I have rock the spot for near two hours with a pair of wire brushes, a pair of nylon rods/rutes, a pair of Johnny Rabb Rhythm Saw sticks and my stick bag a picnic table and a tin can... seriously playing outside a club backing a singer/song writer cat on acoustic guitar doing everything from Motown to Bob Marley to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
I also rocked a house party full of hip-hop freestylers with my car keys and a bottle.
BTW--I am a percussionist that plays drum set or primarily NOT A DRUMMER. The difference is playing/making music not beats/beating on things. * Not bashing anyone... I really like the topic so please guys do not get offended by the previous statement. *

Hahaha! Good to see you let loose now & again Sabe. ;D
I'll see your car keys & a bottle and raise you a 44gallon drum with matching tree branch used at an open air Classical concert. I played that thing for 7 hours straight*!
*Actual event may/may not have happened in reality or my dreams. Results were varied.

Aww man, one time i was playin a gig, and forgot my drumset. It just slipped my mind. I guess i was thinking about food again...but anyway...
I was in a panic, and i had to think quick! Then i looked in the garbage and seen two smashed pop cans. I HAD to do something. So i grabbed the cans and did the gig, and afterwards, everybody kept asking me "how do you get that funky sound?", and i told 'em: "...you just have to have a Can do attitude!" 8)
What?...you do believe me!

On the conga, I use my left hand if I am using just one. I play the backbeat with a slap and the traditional open tones depending on what rhythm I am playing. There is video of my setup out there, but I don't think there is while I am playing the congas.....at least not yet. There if definitely audio on the myspace page of the guy I gig with. I'll change my avatar to better show how it looks too.

wow... ive never seen anything like that b4. kudos for creativity lol
-
snare, hats, base, one tom, and a crash, is what I use almost everytime I play out. And even when I'm home I don't use 3 toms. As you get better, you realize that you can get creative with only a few pieces.

Thanks....I appreciate that. Check out one of the blogs on my myspace page. It will tell you how that came about and how I use it.

One of the greatest things said at the Jojo Mayer clinic I recently attended was that he got to his state of playing by taking stuff away, not adding anything. He even suggested working on practicing with just k, sn, h-h and also working on solos using eighth notes as you smallest subdivision for like 20 minutes or more using various dynamics. This makes the sixteenths etc more meaningful and powereful when you finally add them in. These things as well as fully investigating all the possible sounds within each instrument and also suggested spending time wthe rhythmic possibilities builds your vocabulary.

All I need is a kick, hats, and snare. I don't use much more on Sundays anyway.
-
I've said this in another fourm but, you just need a hi hat, snare, and bass drum. Semi open hi hat for crash symbol, fully open hat for ride, and bass and snare for fills.
-
I have recorded with that setup. I've also done a few 4-hour gigs with that setup minus the tom. A musician can do plenty with that setup. It forces discipline.
-
yup i could play with just that

To answer the initial question, I can hold it down with a simple kit.
It doesnt take much when you know what you're doing.

This is what I love about Mark Simmons (from Houston, toured with George Duke and Al Jarreau). He pulls the sounds out of ALL of his drum equipment. We forget that wood (sticks) makes a particular sound when striking metal (rims, stands, etc.). Not to mention that there are about 10 different sounds you can get from your snare just by changing WHERE on the snare you're hitting, and by changing the ANGLE at which you're hitting it. Nat Townsley played around a bit with this concept on that MD vid, at the beginning of his last song.
The least amount of equipment I've ever used, though is a lunch kit, the base of my palm (kick), and my knuckles (snare/hi-hat). I used to rock the kids on the bus all the way home. And I'm not lying... They used to ask me to hit that beat on my "Mr. T and the A-Team" lunch box. Straight groovin'! ;D
One time at my church, we were rehearsing and we were messing around with an old hip hop beat and people were wondering where the vinyl "scratch" sound was coming from. My snare head was fresh (coated) and grazing the tip of the stick across the head gave a light scratch sound. It was crazy.
