Title: Venting...
Post by: Val215 on May 20, 2008, 09:38:53 AM
This is sorta piggy backing off of Monalisa's post of "don't you hate it when..."

This past Sunday, our church was invited to sing at another church. As a faithful musician, I tend to follow the choir everywhere they go. Well at the church, there was a keyboard and an organ. I played the keyboard (don't know how to play the organ). I started playing for the choir and the musician for the church that we went to hopped on the organ and completely drowned me out. I don't mind others playing along, but geesh....don't try to show off and out play me and play louder to the point where you can't even hear me. If I had known that, I would have stayed at home >:( The director was like "Val were you still playing because I couldn't hear you at all."

Anybody else had this experience?

Yes...I've had this happen before, however, I would never ask another musician to stop playing while the choir is singing/bringing their message forth in song unless the musician was being a hinderance to the message being brought forth (ie., didn't know the song, wrong notes, etc.,).  It doesn't matter if my playing is being drowned out, the message being brought forth in song is bigger than the one.

However, I understand you on the staying at home part.  I'm limited on time myself and if another musician can play the song well enough and drowns my playing out anyway, they are more than welcome to play.  There was a time I stopped playing during the song when this happened and joined the choir in singing.

Telling him to stop was the last thing I wanted to do...especially since he was "jamming" :D

Now you know from now on just tell them not to play when you are playing. I guess we need to get you some organ lessons. You must always get on the loudest instrument. :D

That is kinda rude.  If we have a visiting church and I don't know the musician(s) or haven't talked with them ahead of time, I let them do their thing.

Oh yeah, I've had this happen to me on many occasions.  Most of the time I just dropped out and let them take over.  I was kinda upset, but things like that have to be done decently and in order.  I just took it as that's the way some musicians act, so why fight it.  It's not gonna kill me so just let it go.

If he was doin a good job then it would probaly be best to motion at him to lower the volume, instead of stop playing.

I Dont think its fair to practice for however long you've been practicing and have someone Butcher your song by playing loud. I cant imagine an anointed musician doing that.

I can, the problem is they are not being wise & using proper etiquette.  Some people have been taugh to just jump in and play, while others are taught to sit back and ask to jump in.

Also, on a side note some (they are few though) musicians don't know that their volume is too loud.  As long as people are jamming and don't say nuthin, they feel what they doing is alright.

You shoulda just took the godly & wise approach and said:

STOP THE MUSIC! ....I SAID STOP THE MUSIC, Nah!

Congregation!, we are experiencing a little church etiquette problem here! And Mr. Organ man must think we wadin' in the water somewhere, so he can just drown me out! Oh No!

Wait a minute.........i think i hear a word from the Lord, ("uh huh?...yes Lord....ok...word up!")

God told me to tell Mr. Organ Man, "If thou EVAH doest that unto me again, i shalt take thy & thy organ and escort thy both soaring OUT the back door like Jazzy Jeff on the Fresh Prince, so thou can minister unto the birds and the rest of God's creatures!.......Wif love of course. aman"

See....subtlety really works! 8)

You speak the sho nuff truth. I wish musicans would really learn accompaniment and not playing as loud as the air can tolerate. Musical ettique is a perfect idea for church musicians. We have a drummer at our church who drowns out the pianist and the choir. He even drowns out the prayer at alter call. He has been told to stop but to no avail. Musical ettique (thank you, Lord). ;)

Dear Val,
Don't feel intimidated by the devil's tactics. Yes I have been in the same situation. Those kind of musicians can play the jazzy chord tones, but they can't play simple stuff that we consider simple. Don't stress yourself out about it, but take it to God in prayer. There is a reason you are going through, maybe it is time to leave or visversa. Concult God in everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be blessed my brother, and stay encouraged in the Lord.

How on earth is that ven possible?  :o :o A drummer? Drowning out the rest of the instruments? Drummers are supposed to be the epitome of accompaniment.

WOW.  :o

It happens man..If there is echo & no 1 is controlling the sound from the drums properly, the guy could be bashing you all voiceless >:(

In such situations, I would just step aside & sing along & listen to the playing..

I experienced an almost similar  (but different)situation today at home ...well, I was the only one playing.
This guy who's been playing for +12 years started singing a song & I just played along..
He stopped & asked me if I was playing the song he was singing, i said yeah..
He told me I wasn't..Fortunately my sister was there..we both looked at him startled ::) ?/? :-\ ::) *If sis wasn't there I'd think there is something wrong with me ::)*

Anyway, I thought for a sec or 2 & invited the dude to play..he started playing some jazzy stuff that sounded off, with an off beat, but we quickly caught onto the beat & sang along..he had to lead the singing though because that's the only way we could tell where we were in the song ::) >:(

It's one thing to play a song the way it is & another to add one's own spices & delicacies or pull off a George Duke on a gospel song & expect every1 to hear the song like that..So I was kinda annoyed..but I made a note to self to never to kick people just because their spices are different to mine.. ::)

& Val..we used to have a player who would put his volume above the rest...even if he walked in late, he'd change the volume to full-noise..need I say that the other guy in the synths was always forced to retire to the pews ::) >:(
