AFAIK It`s good to remove rust but it`s kinda harmful for metal. I`d suggest to use any lubricant for metal bearings and not to use wd40 often. Hope it helps.

thanks for the response mingus. I actually found some grease in the garage!

I know that you've found some grease, but I'd audment mingusfingus' response regarding WD-40.  Actually, I would not use it at all.  WD-40 may seem to lubricate (because it is a petroleum chemical based cleaner), but it actually removes all the (existing) lubrication and also attracts dust.  I'd use it to clean off any dirt or grease, then I'd wipe them down, finishing it off with the appropriate lubricant.

I would recommend some 3-in-1 oil - just use a very small amount, and it'll do you just fine.

WD 40 is really good  for kick pedal and hi hat stand maintenance.. It cleans and greases the ball bearings, springs, chain and any moving parts BUT I would not use it on your kit! Straight Vasoline is good enough to use on your lugs...... They do make lug grease tho...

WD 40 not really any good for drum parts or pedals because it ends up stripping away existing lubricants and thereby hastens rusting because it eats through the protective layer and attracts dirt particles which cause friction which grinds in the moving parts.

Use a silicone spray on the moving parts like pedals etc.

Use Vaseline (in a thin-light coat) on the tuning rods and lugs. Too much on tuning rods will cause detuning... you will then have to try and clean out the lugs with a Q-tip, which is near impossible so DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH ON THE TUNING RODS.

[use at your own risk] I do this on a regular (2x a year). get a small wire brush from a auto store and use the softer brush that should get the rust off, but you can do what i did and carfully take apart your pedal(only parts that are connected by nuts bolts and screws), clean with degreaser, then let dry, apply a thin amount of thick grease (auto shop) on moveable parts. that should do the job. Even works well with hi hat stands.

Drum parts are surprisingly delicate. As things have progressed technology wise the use of alloys and just economics doesn't allow us to use the 'old standard' of fix it. Of course there will always be hose times when duct tape will have to fix the hole in the drumhead.

And, Vaseline also attracts dirt.  I wouldn't use that, either.

For tuning rods it is cool because they are internal (covered... screwed into the lugs) and because Vaseline is solid it lasts longer than liquids. But I wouldn't use it on anything else.

...except maybe the ghetto shoe shine  ;D

P U H L E A S E

You mean the Big Cactus (that single handedly demised the Suns chances this year) that used to be on the Miami Ice team?

P U H L E A S E

I love the Big Cactus, but he gets too much credit too. No one ever stopped to realize, He couldn't have won 3 without Kobe and obviously he couldn't do it with Wade either. (i.e. Wade being hurt and the Heat turning into the Ice.)

None the less, Lakers are in the Finals.  ;D
