Post by: jjjoe on June 07, 2008, 10:14:29 AM
I know someone who is very knowledgable in music in his mind can tell you back and forth in theory and stuff, but when it goes from his mind to his fingers he have problems. Can anyone give any advice to what to do please.

This is a classic case of knowledge w/out application.  It is best for that person to slowly put into practice what he/she knows.  Besides, the only way you really KNOW something is to do it.  Are there any specific problems this person is having?

Oh no..
I don't know where to start..
Sometimes I feel like I'm like that..I know the stuff but my fingers just let me down.
To remedy that, I've been trying to force my fingers to play what I know they ought to be playing..
This requires lots & lots of patience because you know how the stuff ought to sound, but you have to start at a snail' pace & it might not soundright when you start so slow..
But that's the only way I've found to work..
Just get on with it & be patient with yourself..You wouldn't regret when you're that..
I hope this will inspire that some1 to start doing it the baby steps way like I'm doing it :)

One of the problems, is that he is trying to put song together and he is confused about how to do it
Also, He is about close to an expert in theory and he having problems with placement like: how to run with the right hand, how in songs he is thinking about how to play ( like he have some good ideas for creative things but applying it is his problems.

It's best to start out slow and practice the basics, then progress on.  I'm not sure how far along you are, but no matter what level you're at, it's important to start out practicing scales (esp. all your major scales), then practice playing basic chords (ie major, minor, diminished), then practice chord progressions (start w/ the I, IV, V chords).

Check out SisterT's site, she has a great chart of scales, fingering, and the 7 basic chords in every key:
http://www.earnestandroline.com/Music/Lessons/scalesfingering.html

Also, along w/ scales, it's great to practice the Hanon exercises.  They're great exercises for your fingers.  Check out this YouTube video by Mr. Ron:

The best thing to do is to practice and keep practicing.  At first, it may be slow and you'll have to think about what you're playing.  It's just ie learning to drive or to type.  You have to think about what you're doing at first, but after much practice, it becomes automatic.

Ok, I know of no other remedy other than doing it as slow as you can get..focus here should be on doing the right thing.
Speed will build up naturally, so we don't want a case of building up speed with the wrong stuff.
So encourage the theory guru to be patient with themselves & start doing it NOW, there is no other better time.

You talking about me? :)

The only thing to do is tell him to sit down at the keys and "practice".

HAHAHA... :DROFL :D

naa...mhhh, ek-tually, jjjoe is talking about me :(
But I know the solution, that is why when I had a sneak preview at GK600 at 2am today, I woke up at 8am & started applying the stuff..
Need I say that I gained more ideas then I could ever imagine after putting an effort to practice (AS 4HG has already stated!).

If I was around your area, I would have loved to visit the person with whip in my LH & a banner with  a NIKE SLOGAN in my RH :)
