Hello,
I'm a musician. I've been playing keyboard and piano since I was 5. I've always did single bass notes in the left hand, I've rarely played with a bass player. how do you play such things such as shouting music and up tempo praise and worship songs with a bass player? Do i need to chord in both hands or continue to do single bass notes?
-
U CAN PLAY CHORDS IN BOTH HANDS IF U LIKE ITS EASY BECAUSE IT ALOWS THE KEYBOARD PLAYER TO DO MORE RUNS AND THINGS AND RIFFS AND FILLERS... BUT ME PERSONALLY I WOULD RATHER PLAY SOLO BUT WITH A BASS IS COOL WATS YOUR TYPE LIKE WHAT YOUR GOSPEL STYLE?
-
I do alot with William Murphy, Donald lawrence, Jonathan Nelson, Israel and New Breed, The Clark Sisters, Freda Battle and stuff like that and I do some traditional. I need to know how to work my shouting music with a bass player as wel.
-
DO U HAVE ANY JERMAINE GRIGGS PRODUCTS? DO U HAVE AN ORGAN PLAYER?
-
no i don't have any of his products i've seen a couple of his lessons. I've been practicing some. i also do a lot more jazz chords. I play organ but most of the times it is just me on keyboard

Playing keys with a bass player requires that you do not clash with the bassist.
This means that you leave the bass parts to him & focus more on the other parts: harmonic & melodic side of the game.
1) 1stly, you'll most likely have to play further down the keys/piano.
2) You will most likely be playing lots of rootless voicings or "shells" in your LH.
If you are looking at DVDs to help you with that stuff, I would advise you start with GK600 Urban Pro..
This topic has been extensively discussed here:
I strongly recommend you read all of the stuff on the 1st link: http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,50235.0.html
http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,53318.0.html (http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,53318.0.html) (look @ the 2nd post).
http://www.gospelmusictrain.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53 (http://www.gospelmusictrain.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53) ( The C has been substituted with the E-Bb tritone in all the instances.)
So another way of approaching it is by playing 2nds, 3rds & 7ths in your LH. You could also opt to play the iii chord of the root or any other thing other than the root.

Here are perfect examples of the most popular progressions..you have 7-3-6 progressions & 2-5-1 progressions here, so it's really a silver platter delivered right in your face :) 8)
remember that a 2-5-1 in a minor key is merely a 7-3-6 of the relative major key ;)

& then a 2-5-1 in a major key :

If you play jazz then you are at an advantage. Often jazz voicings use both hands to play the chords and then delay the bass note for effect. With the the bass player, use both hands and just omit the bass or you can play the chords in your left hand and vamp in your right hand. If you and your bass player know how to follow each other and you trust him/her then you should be able to gel in know time

This is similar to a discussion we were just having in Bass Guitar - about keyboardists stepping on the bassists toes.
I don't play with a bassist (yet), but if I did, I would just move my left hand up an octave and let the bassist have the low end. In the mean time, I would start learning to chord with my left and ad-libbing with my right.
-
I played left handed bass for years and you just have to start practicing using the left hand for chords. This will allow you to play more complex chords with both hands and also free up your right hand to play melodies and smooth transitions between chords.

I totaly forgot that I uploaded a video onto my youtube page, that demonstrates how to play with a bass player without stepping on him.
Here it is:

I was playing with the bass player yesterday..But I noticed that the other keys player was playing as he would play when he's alone. The combo sounded great! reason: the guy was playing soft electric pianos & even the pianos & the bass was set really deep..I was playing the horns ;D
