Title: Favorite Movie Song(s)...........
Post by: BigFoot_BigThumb on June 26, 2008, 06:12:01 PM
Well, many of us watch movies and the movie is one thing, but the music within it and on the souindtralc is another.  It can help tell the story and/or set the mood for what's about to happen. What song or songs from a movie are most memorable to you?

For me it is the following.....

"Visions of a Sunset" by Shawn Stockman from "Mr Holland's Opus."  One the most beautifl string arrangements I've ever heard.

"Father Can You Hear Me" from "Diary of a Mad Black Woman."  This song brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.

"I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight" from "School Daze."  One of the best movie songs EVER!  I bump it in the car and in the house on the regular.  Sometimes I even pull out my bass and play along with it, or at least try.

"In The Middle" from "The Five Heartbeats."  That is my jam.  Also, "Nights Like This" is my other favorite, but not the version when Eddie is singing it out in the parking lot.  Dyyannnnnnnngggggg!!!!!!!  That whole soundtrack is one of the best.

"These Three Words" by Stevie Wonder from "Jungle Fever."  Another tear jerker because it really makes you think.  That is true songwriting right there.  Stevie is the man!!!

"You Will Know" by Black Men United from "Jason's Lyric."  A great song because it was written to inspire.  Also it was the true debut of D'Angelo because he wrote it.  He's the one at the keyboard in the video

I got so many more, but those are the ones that really stand out to me.

This is an easy one. "Be Prepared" from the Lion King. OOOOOOOH, I could watch that evil Lion, Scar, sing that one for days. I even have it on my Ipod. The lyrics are awesome, especially for a cartoon.

Sister from The Color Purple

Hakuna Matata from The Lion King

We Haven't Finished Yet from The Five Heartbeats (the first version, when the sister helped him write it)

I Could Fall in Love and Dreaming of You from Selena

And I am Telling You I'm Not Going from Dreamgirls

and I love EVERY song on What's Love Got to Do With It, but my two favorites are: It's Gonna Work Out Fine, of course A Fool in Love, Shake a Tail Feather, and River Deep, Mountain High.

Don't Let Go by En Vogue from Set it Off

And although you didn't ask this, my ALL-TIME FAVORITE SOUNDTRACK is the Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack.  I loved 13 of the 16 songs!!!  Just a phenomenal soundtrack.  My favorite songs from that movie are: Sittin Up in My Room and Not Gon' Cry and Kissin You and My Love, Sweet Love.

I Could Fall in Love and Dreaming of You from Selena

[Don't Let Go by En Vogue from Set it Off

Bit of trivia.  "If I Could Fall in Love" was recorded here right outside of Nashville.  It was the same writer/producer that did BeBe and CeCe Winans' "Heaven" CD.  Wynonna Judd was recording at the studio at the same time and Selena was cooking in the kitchen for her crew and Wynonna thought that she was a cook for the studio and requested that she make some food for her people too.  She thought Selena was somebody's servant. Somebody got their face broke that day.

"Don't Let Go(Love)" is my jam too.  I just can't play that song at a low volume no matter how hard I try.

Yeah I'm a bigger fan of the soundtrack than I am the movie.  However that may be subject to change because I haven't seen the movie all the way through.  Still based on what I've seen so far...like the soundtrack better than the move

My favorite movie song is, and likely always will be "Fight the Power" from Do The Right Thing.  The timing of the release of that song and the movie are significant to me.  I was a college student who regularly attended Labor Fest at VA Beach annually, starting my freshman year.  In my sophomore year, the mayor of Va. Beach decided she didn't want black college students in her city anymore, so she started doing things like imposing curfews and bringing out the National guard to line the streets.  We definitely didn't feel welcome, but it didn't stop us from coming, and by my junior year, tensions reached their boiling point and the students started staging protests which eventually turned into riots.  (I left before the riots ensued)

Not long after, that movie came out- and that song at the beginning of the movie seemed to make a statement about my experience in Va Beach that summer.

I could kick myself for forgetting Purple Rain...  >:( :-[ :-\

Definitely one of my faves...

Regarding Waiting to Exhale, I suppose it's just more of a chick flick... it really was a pretty good movie.  What disappointed me the most is that they had hyped up the soundtrack so much, and actually released it ahead of the movie.  So, I had it for a long time before the movie came out.  I grew to love the soundtrack from the moment I first played it... and THAT ALONE is what got me excited about seeing the movie.  As I've said before, I'm not much of a movie person.  Mannnn, I couldn't wait to see that darn movie, just because I knew the music was gonna be hot.  Little did I know that they would only play like 15-20 seconds of each song, and it would be played in the background so inconspicuously that you really didn't even know it was playing....  :-\

"Be One" School Daze - Phyllis Hyman

Great song.

A real good friend of mine's cousin made all of Phyllis Hyman's hats.  I miss that woman.  She was all class.  She truly proves that you never really know what someone is going through.

I also love the "Wake Up Suite" from that soundtrack.  That song made me truly appreciate orchestras.

"Perfect Match" is my ultimate favorite from that movie, but I didn't think it was right to list it because of what happens when it comes on.  That groove is nasty(pardon the pun).

Oh, another bit of trivia.  Did you all know that when those two girls are yelling out of the window at Dap, that the dark-skinned girl is Cassi Davis who plays Ella on "House of Payne."  IF you listen real close, you know that voice immediately.  The other girl is a high-school classmate of mine who grew up about 3 miles from me.  She now works for BET.  Another classmate gets a whole lot of camera time in that movie too.  They were "famous" here in Nashville when that movie came out.  A bunch of us classmates were ironically at the movie together when it came out and we were like HEY, there's Natalie, then we were like, HEY, there's Michelle.

The first time I heard "Here's Where I Stand" was at a Youth 2 Youth Drug Free Conference and I had no idea where it was from.  Then one day I was watching TV and it came on!  After many attempts I finally got a chance to see the whole movie.

I'm guessing your friend also likes:

"On My Own" - Les Mis
"Hopelessly Devoted" - Grease
"I am Changing" - Dreamgirls

and all those other female standards!  I was in a music store one day and there was this THICK book of female standards.  I was thinking about getting it because my little sister is into that stuff but (1) she's not into it enough to make me want to by that thick, probably cost to much anyway, book.  (2) Even though I'd probably know a good portion of the songs I don't really care that much to learn them on piano/guitar.   :-\

Carry on!
Waits for someone to start naming Sailor Moon songs.

I forgot some:

"We're All In This Together" - High School Musical

"She's Your Queen To Be" - Coming To America

"Strut Like You Meant It" - The Cheetah Girls 2

"Comes To The Light (Everything)" by Jill Scott - Love Don't Cost A Thing

This isn't a song, but the music at the end of the movie "Mission To Mars" was great.

Actually theses are more like guilty pleasures for me because they just are.   :-\

"All for One" - High School Musical 2

"I Don't Dance" - High School Musical 2

"Step Up" - The Cheetah Girls 2

------------------
Anyway,

As previously stated the entire Preacher's Wife CD was off the hook!  The Space Jam album was pretty good.

"Seasons of Love" - Rent: The Movie mom:  which one?!

"Light My Candle" - Rent: The Movie   mom:  which movie?

"I'll Cover You (Reprise)" - Rent: The Movie  mom:  gurrr!  WHICH...ONE!?
lol

Once again...there's probably more but I don't wanna overload ya'll!   ;)
