procedures and
knowledge acquisition
theory the following questions will test your knowledge of basic to advanced theory
part one scale theory

ie Db Eb E or (Fb) F# G A Bb C
7) what scale would best be used on a major7 chord
the best scale to use on a major 7 chord is a major scale you could also say a lydian scale the lydian scale is a major scale built on the fifth degree
what scale would best be used on a augmented chord
the answer for this is the whole tone scale also called the augmented scale

eb major scale with b3 b7
Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db
10 how do you construct a Ab mixolydian scale
Ab major scale with b7
Ab Bb C Db Eb F Gb
11) to improvise for a jazz sound which note would you alter in a major scale
traditionally you would alter the 5 by flatting it you could also say b3
12) using the same concept what would be a second note you could alter to give you a jazz sound
again either b5 or b3
13) to improvise for a traditional gospel sound what two notes would you remove from the major scale
the traditional scale for gospel is pentatonic so you would remove the 4th and the 7th
14) name three genres of songs or styes or or parts of the service where you may use the blues scale
answers for this question could be

true or false
15 The major scale is the best scale for a devotional song such as cant nobody do me like jesus T F
false the major scale contains the 7 which would sound too tame for this song the blues scale or mixolydian
and even a diminished scale or a melodic minor would be much better
16 The Blues scale is best suited for a song such as Holy Holy Holy if played the way the song is written
false
holy holy holy is a majestic hymn it is best suited for a major scale unless you wanted to play it as a
17 The the pentatonic scale sounds great when played in octaves true or false
true this is how the scale really jumps out in fact most melodies will sound great when played in octaves
18 scales should be always be played quickly in order to develop speed and accuracy
false
accuracy is developed by playing scales slowly accuracy and relaxation bring speed so they should be played slowly at first and then when comfortable alternate between slow and fast
19 It is not important what fingers you use to play a scale as long as it sounds even.
true
although fingering is very important there are some who use alternate fingerings and achieve flawless technique
as long as you can achieve a pristine and very high level of scale technique then who can argue that your fingering should be different
however learning the traditional fingering is advised since all difficulties have been worked out centuries ago why reinvent the wheel.
20 playing scales Legato mean you play them choppy
false legata means connected
21 when you lift your fingers high when you play scales you develop strength and accuracy
true this is a technique taught to beginners to lift the fingers extremely high it really develops the hand to play scales flawlessly and with precision
22 when you keep your fingers in contact with the keys you develop a legato touch,
true another technique taught later to students to develop a very legato touch liszt was famous for this

i am actually going to be taken a basic theory course at York college in the fall so i know this will be a tremendous help in me learning theory. Thank you again.
really I was thinking about going to york college this semester
I want to really finish and get my B.A in music
so I can go on for my Masters in music
I was going to Queens College But I had to drop out because the schedule was just too hectic
5 days a week ( I need my fridays off)
we should stay in touch especially if we are both going to the same school
I met the director two years ago and was very impressed with his knowledge
york isnt the best music school
but if you are diligent you can get a lot out of their program
and it is one of the few jazz programs
that you can get in an affordable program
I dont know about hunter I know the best school is aaron copland queens college
but they only offer jazz in a graduate program
undergrad is straight conservatory style with an emphasis on theory not performance
york has small band ensembles which are excellent for development
and queens has some very talented musicians so I think we will get a very good education there
