Title: Great Playing! Not too much and not too little!!!
Post by: twest45 on July 25, 2008, 07:16:45 PM
This the kind of bass playing I love.  Not too much but making your presence known.  Maybe a lick every now and then.  This is real nice.

Dude was making some classic bass faces in that video too

Sho you right... He incorporated all the following Bass Faces:

1.) The prominent, "Tuck the lips"
2.) "Bite the bottom lip"
3.) "I just snuck one off"
4.) "What Stanks", yes I know I didn't say Stink... I said Stank.
5.) "I'm trying not to Puke"

And my personal favorite

6.) "What you mean, I owe you 5 dollars?"

Now that cat got skillz. That was one of the best Bass performances I have seen on U Tube. Right up there with the DW Wright clip. What is this cats name and is he well known?

I don't even play the Bass and I knew that was sick!!  That was amazing!!
Just enough to not be obnoxious but still show off his skills.

That is what that is!!

...He played some great stuff...but I thought he played waaaaay tooooo much!.....Given what the drummer and keys were doing that is....

...If I were producing that sequence I would suggest that he play about 1/2 of what he was playing and save the riffs for key moments so you dont hear everything the guy knows in the first 3 minutes of the song.....

The song lent itself to what that young brotha was playing. I thought  he did a great job at filling up the song. Now if he was in the studio, then maybe you would be a little more conservative. But, playing live you should have somewhat of a different approach, as long as it does not disturb the song.  I thought he did an excellent job.

I agree...For a live performance it was top notch in my opinion. Plus, he wasn't playing with multiple keyboards or lead guitars, so he sort of had to put in extra fills to liven things up a bit. i enjoyed it

That's was pretty good.  Nice, tasteful fills.  The smile at the end was classic.

His playing was just right for that song. It was definitely not too much in my opinion. He filled in gaps just like any other player would hav done. The drummer had some fills, its just that we were concentrating on the bass, therefore we may have missed some of his fills. Great playing none the less.

He is talented with great chops. Now he just needs to learn when to use them. Not haten at all , I respect the young brothas comin up for what they can do. But when I learned over 35 years ago and it still holds true today, sometimes Less is Better.

I thought that he kept a solid groove going and, even though he was "busy", he wasn't over-bearing.  It didn't really seem like a "look what I can do" performance.  I really enjoyed it.

how did u miss the "why did my girl leave me right before this set" face (complete with R&B singer head shake action)?

I can see where his playing would be considered a bit "busy"... I think it was appropriate though since it was a live setting and he was consistent throughout the song and not just doing a bunch of wild stuff.

Old school players will think he was playing too busy.
New school players will think it was great.

I can appreciate both styles of thinking and IMO for a live performance (just like in the vid) he was on point.  Had the drummer and/or keys been doing more it may have clashed but since everyone else was laying back, why not open up and give the bass player some? lol....

Forums are funny.  You get one thread saying bass players get no love and when a song finally comes along that does allow the bass player to open up, people complain about him doing too much lol.  If he hadn't, someone else in the band probably would've  :P

I hope no one takes offense to what I'm saying as it's not directed towards any individuals, just hoping to give ya'll something to think about!

Be Blessed,
J

I totally feel where you are coming from. It was a live setting and he was consistant throughout the whole song. I wonder how many thought that the bassist on Dorinda's new hit single was busy?

Truth!  Not to hijack the thread but that song is tiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh!!!  There's a part in the middle of the song where the bass does a lead in fill and my jaw dropped the first time I heard it.  It's almost like the whole band was trading licks through the whole song lol

Yeah, and really that might have been "the bass player's song".  I remember our choir doing Rain on us, by John P. Kee.  That was the drummer's song (the song where he was EXPECTED to solo and fill things up).  So, maybe that was the song where the band said "It's on you to make this song".

im learning that song for my choir. just started really listenin to it yesterday. i dont think he's all that busy though. just the breaks and the riffs are different. i got frustrated once again in rehearsal last night because the organist wouldnt do any of it (but still wanted to play the bass part, and totally ignore the organ and keys in the song). its good ear training getting those licks, but i dont have the time to learn every single one note for note.

The other thing we have to take into consideration is that we are hearing the bass mostly from his perspective.  If the camera was out more where you could hear everything in a blended format, then it would have came across a whole lot different.  All we're getting is bass and drums.  Still good stuff.

You should talk to the organist fload.  In my opinion, all the breaks and riffs make this song different from all the other songs that sound just like it.  This song is really just your normal what we in Mississippi call "Going to Church" song or "Churchy" song.  Her band took something simple, added riffs and breaks in it and now it sounds fresh.  When you actually start learning it you'll realize that all the riffs are easy.  All of them are some you've heard in other songs.  It's just in this song they threw them all in there.  But you'll get the riffs, I promise.  Now  whether or not the organist will play it that way,  which from the way you're talking I doubt it, is all up to him/her.  We did this song this past Sat at a workshop.  It's a very fun song to play.

I haven't seen the album cover, but I was for sure it was Gouche. Some things sounded like his style.

On Dorinda's album?  Nah, I didn't think that was Gouche.  A few of the runs were kinda "goochy" but the overall song didn't seem to have his usual flavor but I could  be wrong.

Yeah, some things made me question if it was him. At times I thought it was maurice.
