what would they be judged on and who would you send to take the gold
-
anybody that could play Prince's Purple Rain solo note for note will win Gold!!!! :D
-
i thought u would bring up prince
-
Scoring would be as follows:
55% soul/feeling
5% technical prowess
25% originality
15% tone
Points subtracted for unnecessary speed.
I'd send Warren Haynes (Prince would fit in his pocket, by the way, Gib) ;)

Wow... we are no longer speaking...

That's not the best quality, but you'll dig the intro to that song. See if you can place it, Mr. PrinceFan... :P
Make sure to listen all the way to the second solo at least. Pay no mind to the faces. Maybe we should subtract for faces, too lol.

Woah... I didn't know that youtubes automatically embedded now... sorry. I was trying to post a link.

I almost cried. I still may.
+1 on Vernon Reid as well, funkstrat.

Seems like he used 1 of the maybe 25 blues guitar riffs. ;D

Derek Trucks plays so distintively from the crowd of guitarists (even when he isn't using the slide assist or when he isn't using alternative tunings). It seems like he lives and breathe what he plays. If he was a church guitarist, his playing could be called annointed.

Mr. Carter will represent the gospel guitarist category and I believe he is going for gold! He's Annoited!!!
Check him out below in warm-up (offering time).

That was great! I think it was the sea foam green Strat lol.
He traversed at least three distinct styles through that.
Here's what I don't understand, if there are gospel players out there like that, why does everyone make such a fuss of J. DuBose?
I know he wasn't mentioned yet, I'm just wondering (cause I know it's coming... well... it is now lol).
Nice vid, man.
Oh, and I agree with what you said about Derek. That's what I was hitting on in that other thread--there are so many talents around that could be very powerful workers for God if they had their stuff together. It makes me equal parts hopeful, and just flat-out-burdened for them.

Larry Carter is close friend of mine, have played with him on numerous occasions. He's a great guy. The reason most people have never heard of him is because he is UPC, and unless you are UPC you're not going to hear about many of the very talented artists that they have because it is such a closed group.
-
Larry Carter is good and i like him. But, i do know if you can compare him to Dubose.Dubose have some nice cds out.play with best gospel artists out there. You saw him in the vid with Paula White. One thing i think would help Larry Carter,if he STOP singing. His calling is on the guitar,it is not
singing that is for sure. But,i like that vid.Thank for the post.Mr.S
-
You saw him in the vid with Paula White.
Right, and I saw a fair deal of mediocrity.
I'm not bashing, but I've yet to see a Dubose clip where I was like, "yeah, he's really stinking good." It's more like, "Eh... he's ok..."
I may be completely wrong. If you can point me to a clip that would move me, then great, I'll 180* and admit he's great, but he just doesn't grab me.
He's not bad, he's ok, but his playing doesn't really grab me.
I'd dial right past it if I were flipping through the radio stations.
That's all.
-
He is not for everybody.
-
He is not for everybody.
Right. That's all I was saying. Everybody's got their likes and dislikes.
-
You are so right. But,i like both of them ;)

That was pretty cool! I've always liked that quartet stuff, where the guitar is the main instrument! ;D

The UPC is more careful about their doctrine and they take a stand about it. I understand what you mean about their musicians' fame and I guess you can say a closed group, but just in case someone misunderstands you...UPC do welcome whosoever is lost and the unsaved to Christ's salvation.
Now, I like Dubose, too. I think he plays congregations songs very well. In the Olympics, you have more than one representing a country and going for gold. J. Dubose and others may be aiming for the prize...(see 1 Corinthians 9:24 and Philippians 3:14).
Check out this link to some of Dubose's recordings...esp. #7

it wasn't a slam....i am a staff pastor at a church that still has UPC ties. In the last year i have played at the UPC general conference, youth congress, because of the times, and numerous district youth conferences. i was just speaking from experience and a close firsthand knowledge of the organization and it's leaders. like i said, it wasn't a slam, it's simply fact. it's a circle i've been in and played/taught/ministered in for 15-20 years.

OK, I'm flipping through all this mow.
It kinda reaffirmed me... he's a very good talent--I can't deny that--but there's something that's not there that I need to really enjoy music.
Kinda felt like I was sitting in the doctor's office flipping through a motor trend.
Maybe he's one of those you have to see live.
Maybe I just don't dig his style. Maybe I'm too picky.
I'm not saying I'm anything--because I'm not--but all that stuff sounds (to me) just like everything else I've heard in the genre.
I'm glad that you guys all really enjoy him, but I couldn't roll to it, that's all I'm saying. It's great background music, though :)
-
Do not worry about brother.JAY say Prince can not play either ?/?
Easy... lol I never said that.
I never said DuBose CAN'T play. In fact, I said he has a great deal of talent, but there's something that's just "not there" for me.
It does not grab me at all.
There are a lot of guitarists that I can recognize with just a few notes... you hear them and you're like, oh, that's so-and-so.
He's not one of them. It's not distinctive. It doesn't stand out at all. It's just one more over-compressed Strat busting out jazz licks. It's GOOD, it's just not for me.
That's all.
If it's y'all's bag, then great! I'm happy for you.
It's just not my bag.
;D <See? A Smiley. We're all friends here. No hard feelings.

That means a lot to me. I really appreciate when someone appreciates me lol ;)
I'm playing, but really, it does mean a lot. Like I said, I don't claim to be anything, I just play what I can.
I wasn't trying to debate. Maybe I've been grouchy lately lol.
Carry on, LGM ;D

You're RIGHT! I truly dug that INTRO.
(Well...at least the part that began, "Ladies and Gentlemen,...Mr. George Porter Jr!")
After that it kinda sounded like same 'ol Warren Haynes noodlin' over old covers....BUT it DID have George Porter Jr. on bass!!
Mr. Porter is ma bass hero from way back. I lub me some Meters! 8)

I know he wasn't mentioned yet, I'm just wondering (cause I know it's coming... well... it is now lol).
1. That Strat is NOT close to being Sea Form Green...it's some metallic green mess.
2. Clip reminded me of Michael J. Fox's guitar work at the prom in "Back To The Future"...except Fox played more evenly.
3. This is a great clip to demonstrate how a Stratocaster DOESN'T sound like a Telecaster. Guy was pullin' off all kinda of Tele-style double stops that sounded like they simply missed the percussive "thwack" that a Tele brings. Strat settles for a middle ground between Les Paul & Tele...and this seemingly stock Strat showed it's limitations.
4. DuBose is smooth and thoughtful. I appreciate smooth and even over this uneven kinda everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kinda display. Wade Carter sorta sounded like a guy playing all his best and quickest music store showcase licks back to back while falling down a flight of stairs. Timing is NOT this guys friend. ::)
-

The intro was the only part that was a cover. Warren wrote Beautifully Broken with his Organ player.
I can see what you're saying, though.

Still listening through the Timmons, but the way he lets his notes blossom into feedback, the dynamics, and all that, just proves your amp is an equally important piece in your style as your guitar is.
Let me rephrase that--the way you control your amp is equally important as the guitar itself.
That man's a monster.

I just started listening the the Howe clip - is that Sunny? Sweet...
I've got a track of Jimmy Smith ripping that one up (the late, great Hammond whiz).

he lives here in Dallas...had a chance to see him a couple of months ago and some fam stuff came up....was very bitter, lol.

Ah... I feel you. I still can't get my dad to tell me why bluegrass gets a "free pass" in his theology, yet everything else is evil lol (well, I make it sound more harsh than it is...)

IMO, the best part about Andy Timmons are his rhythm chops. Just some of the layers he puts on during in his recordings are remarkable.
This guy (Brian Kahanek) is probably my fav guitar player ever.
