When a song is in a minor key, how do you approach the song? Are you think Major or are you thinking Minor with the minor chord being the 1?
Example:
In Ab, are you just thinking in Ab with the 6th (F) being the minor or do you think it as the F being the 1?
-
That's what I do. I just think like I'm in the major key.
-
Yep, it is much easier for me to think of it being in the major key. That way i know all the notes that are associated with that particular minor key i am playing in.
For instance, if i am playing gin C minor, i just think Eb major.
-
Actually I can (and have been forced) to do both. I just take the minor as the one...like when im playin Bighter Day i think C minor instead of Eb major...it comes a little more narutal to my brain and hands lol
-
I'm always thinking Major, unless I'm analyzing for school.
-
I just keep in mind to flat the 3rd.
-
I think of the key Im in. Im not with this new age, analyze minors in a major key deal.

To answer your example, if you're in F MINOR, then yes, you'd apply the chords you'd play in Ab Major.
Something that I like to do is treat F like the 2 of Eb Major or the 3 of Db Major (or if you want to take it out a little even the 7 of F# Major). This works because F is minor in Eb and Db and Diminished (nice!) in F#.
You have to eventually come back to playing it as the 6 of Ab Major, but it sounds nice to change things up a little.

I think in major as well. ;)

I do that also. I made a post about it a while ago.

I guess there's nothing new under the sun. :)

I'm having trouble recognizing when a song is minor, I've certainly got a long way to go with this whole musician thing. :-[ :'( :-\

Any "sad" sounding progression is an indication that the song is a minor.

If u mean recognizing it by sound, then what Fenix told u is a good indication. Another indication is if your 1 chord is minor, then you're in a minor key. If your 1 chord is major, then you're in a major key. That's how I judge it.
Let's say that u listening to a song and u determine that the key is C. The first thing u should do is hit the major 1 chord to see if it fits with the song. If it does, then chances are u in a major key. If the major 1 chord doesn't fit, the minor should, and that should tell u you're in a minor key.

Yep, T-Bizzle is right. Just listen for the resolving chord and you'll be good to go.
