I'm pretty sure there is a post about this somewhere round here. But anyways, when I was younger I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween. Except for if I was with my dad, that was a different story. Then at one point I remember being confused about Halloween because I was told or taught that christains shouldn't celebrate it. But I remember going to some church where they were having some type of gathering. Some people were dressed up in costumes and everything, and it was an event that was held at night on Halloween.
I've heard alot of different stories, as well as the history of Halloween. If I can remember, it was called something else, and it was celebrated by christains?! As I got older I could care less about Halloween, not because I was told that christains shouldn't partake in it. It was simply because I was older, and grew out of it. Except for the candy, I LOVE candy. lol When I was living in Orlando, all that changed. I went to Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios, which was pretty fun. Me and my roomates even pulled a Halloween prank on one of the other roomates, which was hilarious.
So anyways, my quesion is....
-Do you celebrate Halloween?
-And how do you believe christains should celebrate it?

Halloween is like Christmas Eve.
The original name is "All Hallows Eve", being the day before "All Saint's Day" or "All Hallows Day".
According to wikipedia, "All Hallows Eve" used to be a Christian celebration, or feast day; while the latter day was a day to remember those that died serving Christ.
I'm doing a music concert on All Saint's Day.

My parents let us trick or treat when we were younger. The more I thought about it and the celebration of witches, the living dead, and other demonic influences, I decided that it isn't a good idea, and I would not allow my children to celebrate it.
My church has a harvest party where kids can come dressed as animals or other less sinister characters and have fun. People think that's wrong, but to me as long as they're not glorifying the devil, I say let them have an alternative to keep them otherwise occupied during that time.
-
The original celebration on Oct 31 had to do with protecting the harvest of ancient Ireland. Ancient Irish had the belief that spirits would come back and destroy their crops/harvest, so they dressed up as evil spirits to ward off/appease oncoming evil spirits.
The name origin's as we know it today is as what B3 stated...the ghouls, ghost, witch costumes that are associated with halloween in the CONUS, are mostly a representation of how movie makers and writers have put a spin on the day.
My mom let me celebrate it when I was young, I even remember dressing up in an "Evil Kneival" (70's...lol) costume at a church halloween celebration. I don't remember it being a major issue back then, same as with christmas celebration's now.
I've attended church's that have a harvest celebration as an alternative to halloween (no costumes, but fun and games - fruit treats instead of candy treats, etc.,) as Nessa stated.
I don't think it bothers me either way, I don't look at the day as a "celebration" of something evil (witches, ghouls, ghost, etc). I just think of it as something fun, especially the haunted houses at the amusement parks...BTJM.

Our kids wear friendly costumes like Iron Man and Power Ranger and go to our Church for fellowship. Can't we take what the devil meant for bad and make it good?

I don't celebrate Halloween. When I was younger I just wanted to dress up and play around. I didn't really care about the door-to-door thing. My parents let my sisters and I partake in the Halloween parades when we were in elementary school. My old church would have a party for the kids to dress up as non-demonic charaters and have a Christ focused party. Then there was a pinata(sp) that was full of candy and pennies. Some of the older guys would break it open and the kids would make a mad rush to the candy. Also that night there were various games, even praise and worship.
And for couples who like to role play, Halloween time is great! Not because they celebrate the holiday, but because costumes are on sale. Lol!

Oh wow... this is interesting. My church is TOTALLY against Halloween, they don't do anything.... no harvest or costumes or anything like that.
However, there is this church some of the youth went to one year. It was called, "The Scream House", I think! It was on the news and in the news papers and stuff.
Anyways, the church was set up like a "haunted" house. The only difference is... when you first walk in, its pitch dark.. then you walk a little further, they have a demon guiding you through the whole thing. It was VEEERRRY creapy! Anyways, while the demon is guiding you, he shows you all the things that can get you into hell. And the scenes where played out, and you would stand there and watch, several scenes as you walk through. You would see, teens partying and drinking, a man beating on his wife, and she ends up committing suicide, etc. Then after all the scenes as you continue to walk. You would see hell.... and it was LITERALLY hot in there. You would see the people from the scenes in hell, and a few demons in there. And you could hear them crying out for God, and see them "burning"... and they would be reaching out to try to grab you for help and stuff.
After that part.. you have to hold onto this rope, and put on some goggles, (still guided by this demon), which makes it impossible for you to see. As you're guided through you can't see, but you can hear the demons telling you to walk and you can hear chains, and people screaming and stuff.
Then you enter into a much cooler place. We no longer had the rope, but still had on the goggles. It seemed like everyone was at ease when we got to that point. Because alot of the youth were literally crying and freaked out. But this place where we now was, was heaven. Still having on the goggles... A man (Jesus) walked by and we were to feel his hand where he had been nailed. Then we took off the goggles and seen this wonderful scenary which was heaven. Um... someone who was in the crowd with "us", stepped out and asked if she was in the "Lambs book of life", and God shook his head no, then the demons came and took her away!
But yeah that was the only time our church has ever done anything for Halloween. I went to something else liek that at another church, but I don't think it compares. That church was also critising the other churchs thing, because of the stuff they heard about it from the news and stuff.

Our church doesn't celebrate Halloween. It is strictly the devil's night so why should the church do anything on that day? You can get candy anyday, you can have a parade anyday, etc. Why try to compete with the world on Halloween? Just stay home and chill out like it's a regular day.

Why should the devil run us all indoors and claim it as his day? Why can't the church do something to counter and say that it's not his day, This is the day that the Lord has made, he ain't got no day, lol!

I don't celebrate it, my pastor is passionately against it and my whole church shuns it. in fact some members of my church go as far as to schedule doctor's appointments and check-ups for that day so their kids don't go to school if it happens to fall on a week-day.
:)

Hmm.. they might be on to something, the dr's/dentist's offices would probably be less booked on that day.

It's a shame when Christians dress up like Bible characters, or even dress up at all.

I'm just saying why do anything on that day? Just because it's a "holiday" don't mean u gotta celebrate it, just skip it altogether and treat it like another day.

Why not do the same for your birthday? Christmas? New Years? What's with "Watch Night"? Why give pastors an appreciation day? ;) I could go on.

i plan on letting my kids dress up
