I asked this in the guitar room but maybe some of you keyboard players can help me
You guys I was so embarassed on Sunday. I was playing the organ and there was a guy playing lead guitar. Anywho, we sounded like hot mess cause we weren't on the same key. He thought it was in the key of 32 and I thought it was in Ab. Anyway, I just stopped trying to argue with him and I just tried to get in the key he was in. Problem is, I had a hard time recognizing what key he was in. What is 32 on a lead guitar and how in Jesus name do I play that on a keyboard??? ?/? :-[ :-\
If this has already been asked please point me in the right direction or thread.

The key of 32? Maybe he meant the 32nd key on the keyboard. This reminds me of the time I was playing keyboard wit this guy, and I asked him what key the song was in and he told me +3.

Lawd Jezus T, we sounded like CRAP!!! I just want to know what's the difference between the keys of a keyboard and the tabs (I think) of a guitar. My ears couldn't pick up what key he was in. I finally just stopped playing cause it sounded so terrible. :-[

Since their instrument is tuned (E A D G B E) many guitarists have a hard time playing in flat keys. There's this wonderful device they can get at the music store called a capo, that can raise their key up a 1/2 step, like from G to Ab.

I had this problem about 2 weeks ago with our bass player, but we caught it before service...do a sound check prior to service, if the guitarists sounds out of key with you on keys...they can manually tune also (E A D, etc.,), it may not be perfect, but it will be close enough to where it's manageable.

Same thing happend to me last week, the guitar player was telling me to play in the key of 5. He meant E.
I guess your friend meant D

Been there buddy. I ain't gonna even count the number of times I have played wit people and we didn't gel. On the flip side, at least there have been times where I did gel with others.

I am a guitarist and the "key of 32" makes absolutely no sense!! There isn't even a 32nd fret on the guitar.
You should have just told him to get on the key of Ab or whatever key you were playing in. I repeat, the key of 32 makes no sense to me whatsoever. If he was playing lead then he should have no issues playing in any key. If he was playing chords then i may understand that he would have a bit of a difficult time.

3rd fret, 2nd string most likely.
That would be C. At least that's the only thing I could come up with.
-
I always had to tune my bass guitar at every session. Cas10 is so right. Guitars get out of tune fairly easily. They sound terrible if they are. And you can tune a guitar to itself and yet be out of tune with the keys.
Best to tune with the other musicians.
I always carried a tuner with me. (to tune with keys)
It might not have been you, Chev. He might not have been in a key. (according to his skill as a guitar player)

Do you mean it's C when you strum all the strings? Because the 3rd fret, 2nd string is D.

Hmmmm....I'll let you correct yourself. ;)

Or, you could just answer the question because your answer STILL doesn't make sense. ;) ::)
-
Ok.
First, I said "3rd fret, 2nd string". The 2nd string is the A string, if you count up 3 frets, you have a "C".
Other than that, I couldn't come up with anything else. I'm trying to guess what "32" means, like the rest of you. So there.
Admit you made a mistake....Sheesh. ;)
-
It could also be 3rd string, 2nd fret which makes the key E.
Because the 3rd fret, 2nd string is D.
Say it ain't so sjon, please say it ain't so? :o

Why are ya'll giving Sjon a hard time? If he is not familiar with the tunings on a guitar then its ok.

Maybe, but it doesn't make sense for the guy to call out the key of 32 knowing that he is dealing with an organist who may not understand guitar tunings.
Mrs Vonee, did you talk to him after church to find out what happened?

It's not the tunings, it's the strings and frets themselves. Those don't change, plus he is a music teacher who should know better, LOL.

Indeed, he is. He also teaches the guitar from the bottom string to the top string (because the music is written in piano form in the books that most teachers, in my county, use).
So, bottom line, I was looking at it differently. ;)

Hmm.....Ok. I guess I was wrong then. ;)
I wasn't thinking straight. I was thinking how I call out the strings when someone is playing. Usually, I'll number them top down. Standard way is to name them top up.
In my head, I number them as I'd see them on a tab.
....but anyway. "32" is still weird.

Yeah I talked to him and he said I was in the wrong key. My ears just can't seem to pick up the key a guitar is in. :-\
BTW, I came in later so we didn't have time to do a sound check. To make matter worse, we sat across the church from each other which is why I have to train my ears to pick up the key a guitar is in.

At the time I didn't get it, but I eventually figured it out. It was just weird that someone would actually call out +3 as a key. I'm like "+3 from what?" Knowing the musicians in my area, it was +3 from C, being Eb.
