At least to me. It's perhaps one of the most ingenious compositions ever. I only know one other person that can play this song verbatum with no mistakes. I've tried, but I dare not do it for you all.
"Portrait of Tracy" by Jaco Pastorious.

Jaco is lost in a world of his own, the only people I know can pull the off is victor wooten, and steve bailey.

So true. His instructional videos were quite an experience, and not just because of his playing.

There were a few guys that I grew up with that could play this peace note for note, but you have to understand that bass players like Jaco, Stanley Clark, were the bass players that we look at and yes sometimes "cop there stuff because ( at least some of us )they were unique...kinda the same thing with Victor Wooten with new and younger bass players today, but if you really would like to hear a serious solo then try to find and listen to Willie Weeks solo on Donnie Hathaways "Everything is Everything.
Now mind you Willie played this solo in 1973 with a Fender Precision Bass !

I have the studio and live version of that song, and that is another favorite of mine. He just grooved so hard on that solo on the live version. That fact that Donnie let him have such an extended solo shows how much he was respected as a musician. I have pretty much everything tht Donnie ever put out. I probably got a couple of CD's that you may not know even exist on Donnie Hathaway. That man moves me everytime I hear him sing. I just wish he was still around. He would be schooling these young cats that swear they are the greatest singers ever.

Not trying to hijack, but here is a link to marlowedk doing a great job playing along with the solo on "Everything is Everything".

"Peace Prayer" by John Patitucci is one of my favorites.

Think about the gear they were using back then!!!nowdays it's all about extended range basses, and hi-fi amps, the Acoustic 360 and the later 370 systems were really the best you could get at that time, but they sounded real good, and still do today,i used to own a 370 bass system, and it was fantastic!!trouble was it wasn't too loud when you stood in front of it,but 15 feet away it was very loud!due to the folded horn type of enclosure the Cerwin Vega speaker was in,the point i'm getting at is,we all seem to get wrapped up in the "must have best gear"syndrome, but for me anyway, simple and straight is best,i do have 5 and 6 string basses, but my old jazz bass is always the standard to beat, find a good old jazz or P bass and it will take some beating from any bass made nowdays, what do you guys think?
