I had to watch the clips again. What I like about Thomas is that he can fly by the seat of his pants and play out of the moment. He has the guts to allow himself to be vunerable to his own creativity and whatever happens from that is what it will be.

Thomas is hot, but I still think its a little early to crown him a "living" legend. He has done some pretty impressive things, no doubt. But he has nowhere near the resume of the TRUE living legends like Vinnie, Dennis, Dave, or Gadd.

Based off of feel alone, Thomas has become my second favorite drummer after Chris Dave. The reason it's amazing is, when I first heard Thomas Pridgen play on that Gospel Chops clip, I thought he had talent, but his playing gave me an unusually empty feeling.
...kind of amazing that he's now my second favorite drummer BASED on his feel.
My ONLY gripe is, he has a nice feel, but he seems to have a little issue with precision. Whether it be endurance issues, timing issues, etc, etc, etc ... he'll sometimes stop in the middle of playing. That's sort of frustrating for me because of how much I connect with the feel of his playing - and you don't want to experience any obvious glitches.
Reminds me of a classical pianist named Alfred Cortot. One critic said, "He plays a lot of wrong notes, but the ones he play right sound better than anyone else's."

I agree. No one is judging....the issue has to do more with health and mental well being than anything else. I've seen so many talented musicians fall by the way side or see their careers cut short term because of some bad decisions or addictions. We would like to see all independent black or whatever race of musicians continue to become greatest they can be.
We are pulling for Thomas, or whoever is at that level, stage, and platform to make it and be the best. D-O-D's statement is 100% valid. We all have areas we can do better to make ourselves better and we owe it to ourselves and God who gave us the talents and abilities, to be good stewards and take care of what we have.

Then they label the fam on here as "chruch drummers", like that's a negetive thing. And then, they forget how we all give props and much respect to them for their skills. So funny :D!!!

Yet at the end of the day everyone has their own personal issues that may stifle their growth in any area of their lives. For some individuals it's public, for others its not. So lets just be mindful of others not to be offensive, especially deterring individuals from being in the Church. As far as musicianship is concerned, that's fair game. LOL.

People just need to shut their mouths when speaking on certain things that they truly don't understand. Dude smoking weed has nothing to do with his playing or gliches in his phasing. If someone can prove that, then do so. :-\

That 3 cymbal stack he's using sounds so nice. I actually tried 2 16" A Customs for hi-hats because of this guy and they didn't sound too bad. I couldn't do the 18"s because the spring in the church hi-hat stand is just about done.

People just need to shut their mouths when speaking on certain things that they truly don't understand. Dude smoking weed has nothing to do with his playing or gliches in his phasing. If someone can prove that, then do so. :-\
Yeah i kinda dont know why that whole topic of him smoking came up in the first place. alot of the pauses in his playing some times are musical and sometimes are just cause you are trying to figure out something in your head. i see it happen to people all the time especially those that play as spontaneous as thomas and they dont smoke.

i am not someone that has memorized every verse in the bible but i do recall there being something in there referring to the body as the Lords temple and that we are to take care of it etc.
its along the same lines of conversation about why christians shouldnt get tatoos if they arent for glorifying God etc. . .
i would have to look up the rest of the stuff and get back to you.

Thomas is a grown man and he can do whatever the heck he wants LOL. I think smoking weed limits him but hey... Who am I?? Thats just my opinion... I love his playing regardless!

No worries man. I'm never offended by the internet. However, it is not uncommon for church folks to throw stuff around that they heard in church one day. Unfortunately, some crazy stuff can get mixed in there sometimes and could possibly be passed along. This can cause people to be hurt by "church folks..."

Yea man i feel you. i think it also has to do with church folk thinkin that because they dont necessarily have the same struggle as your or that theirs isnt as public as yours that they can open their mouth and say what they want when they want to and alot of times its either not called for or its not the right place or its not said in the right way at all.
its kinda interesting cause the bible says tell the truth in love and to also do things in decency and in order. alot of "church" folk forget that. its kinda interesting though if you look at things like that.

I wasn't discounting anything that you say man, I just kinda added to it. On the real, this what I tell my children; I tell them to not to even think about smoking weed, cigarettes, crack, meth, and all the other crap in the world. Period.
Nobody was born with a joint, blunt, pipe, cigarette, etc in their mouth. It's not a necessity, we don't need it. But, I'm not judging who does. I'm not pure in my body. I have tats, and done some things that are considered taboo. I've never smoked cigarettes, crack, meth or did coke, but I'm not one to trip off another for smoking weed.

Moreover, this would not be the first time someone has used one small verse of an entire biblical chapter, without explaining its context, in an attempt to make a point. Nevertheless, I will slow down my metronome to 40bpm so you can try to add something useful to the discussion...

It's always a matter of the heart.
This is just another endless debate of "will I go to hell if I do this?".
Please, as smart as everyone trying to be right now with their big words and pithy comments, just stop it. It gets so repulsive after awhile.
"Can I do this" and "Can I do that" have never been the real issue. All I know is we can't serve two masters. If an object (or person), whether it be food, cigarettes, pornography, the gym, your diet, your job or sports, masters you and is your treasure, what you hope in, then I would say your heart has not yet been transformed by the gospel. You really haven't seen the light for lack of better words. I would even go as far as to say you aren't a Christian, but I won't :D.
Like I said, it's always a matter of the heart. Don't point to the spec in your brothers eye while there is a plank in yours. This debate doesn't ever finish well, I know first hand, I'm usually the one causing the mess! ;)

No smoking dosent send you to hell, but disobedience can!!! Your obedience determines your relationship with God. The closer you are to him, then the more you are willing to do and sacrifice. If you adored God so much, it wouldnt be any problem TRYING to be obedient to his word, because it would be your determination to please him. The more distant you are from God, the more you subject yourself to the things that CAN send you to hell. One thing the church has stopped preaching was heaven and hell, like there isnt going to be anyone judgement at the end. Its all blessings and prosperity thats being preached these days. Blessings and prosperity will not help you if your soul is not where it should be. Im not judging anyone, because like I said we all have our own problems, and I myself smoked Marijuana, but I know It was pushing me further away from God. Why cause it destroys your body. Number 2 The bible you are either for me or against me, and if you are for me you would obey my words. This whole thing wasnt intended to determine Thomas's heaven or hell status, but just to show the brother that it is bad for your health man thats all, and that a healthy body is Gods desire for you. He gave the body to do his work. God didnt create just to hang around. He created us for his glory!!! How do we bring glory to God?? By being obedient, reaching out to his people, spreading the Gospel, saving souls!!!And if we dont take care of our body, we wont be in the proper health to operate in excellence!!! I hear what you are saying. However, there are many things that can be classified as "defiling" to the body.
Excessive sugar intake is defiling to the body and can lead to diabetes, which BTW is rampant in the black community. Is that somehow better than smoking? If so, who makes the rules? Scientific studies, which I don't necessarily agree with, have shown that aspartame causes neurological damage. Aspartame happens to be a flavoring ingredient commonly found in sugarless gum. If a person chews sugarless gum, are they then defiling the body? What if they chew it excessively because they are trying to quit... smoking?
Now, the only reason any of this rhetoric is relevant to this topic is because I watched this thread go from positive to negative and offend a man because his personal issues were spoken of negatively. Whether it is admitted or not, judgements were made... on a gospel site... judgements of right or wrong, good or bad.
Hell becomes relevant to the topic because many black churches preach "holiness or hell" and run people right out the door with their judgements.

I just so happen to visit the Pearl drummers forum the other day and I was running through a few threads they had on "gospel style drummers" and particular Thomas P. Alot of those dudes are not fans of and don't appreciate the whole Gospel Chops video series, nor do they appreciate the choppiness of the drummers who are involved with Gospel Chops.
For those who consider yourselfs "Gospel Drummers", how do you feel about this stigma that gospel drumming is all about showing off and the drummers have no groove? Is this a fair accessment of what is being put there with the Gospel Chops series and the gospel drumming community as a whole?
Mind you that most of the comments seem to be becoming from metal and punk style drummers who play loud and fast and spin their sticks and play with no technique ?/? :-\

Then I realize that they can't play their way out of a wet paper bag, as evidenced on the plethora of videos posted on that forum.

If you think about it, there are common denominators in all genres - it's what you add to your playing is what makes one stand out.
Regarding the common denominator statement, most of them wouldn't see it that way, as they live in glass houses.
Why get mad when you realize the source of it all? I laughed... quite hard, actually. As for metal, rock, punk drummers... I have found them to be the most loyal, most interested, most intrigued, with regard to the style, the products, and the brand. Honestly most of the scorn, hatred, jealousy, ect. that I have personally experienced has been from within my own community. Real talk. :-\ Jazz cats show love. Rock cats show love. The international communities show major love. Conversely, many that have grown up with it, heard it every Sunday, and can do it themselves tend to take it for granted and appreciate it less. Actually, the most fulfilling feeling is when I have the pleasure of talking with the pierced, tatted, spiked haired dudes from other communities that are interested in what we do. They want to know exactly what is is that the black church community does that can produce a cat that can win the Guitar Center Drumoff at nine years old. They want to know what in the world Lil' Nick is eating to get that good while being that young. They are curious and interested, but they ain't steppin foot in your church because when you start rolling in the floor and drooling, they get terrified! They're thinking, "Dude! That's crazy! Did you see that?!" I'm thinking, "Aww yeah, we bout to have chuuuuch up in here." ;D
We come from different places. That open mind will allow you to embrace the differences. There is positive and negative on both sides.

Me pesronally I don't see nothing wrong with the Gospel Chops idea. I mean I watch myself. My opinion though is that when Flat started out, I mean there were alot of masterclasses, people actually demonstrating fills and showing what rudiments helped them develop them. I dont see much of it anymore. Shed Sessionz was a good idea, but It just sparked something in the community, and now everybody and their sista is trying to post shed and chops videos, and about 70% of them are african american drummers, nothing wrong with that neither cause for some reason its easier for them to gain the skills and ability. I wouldnt blame it on Gospel Chops or Gerald. Its just that these days, thats all the world is seeing when it comes down to african american drummers. No it is not just us, but our community is responsible for must of the publicity. I think more of us should post and posses more educational, and musical refrences, knowledge, and examples to balance out the fact the all we can do is chop. And not to add any more negativity, but I think the reason that its being classified as church drummers is the fact that, thats what the classify the people demonstrating and blazing chops. So when the say church drummers you automactly think of.......well you know the names (Im not trying to put anyone out there!!), and the word church these days is being misused tremendously. People we to see african americans do more than holding sheds and blazing shops, and we (as a community) are just not giving it to them. We need to balance it out!!

Thats not something im for or against but I got WAYYYY to many issues in my life to worry about whats hurting his playing..........Self accountability a lot of Christians need this word tattooed on there foreheads! All I have to say in reference to the present topic is everyone can state their thoughts and opinions and try to give guidance all day long, but some folks just have to learn the hard way. Sadly, that's the only way sometimes. Hopefully it won't come to that, but each individual ultimately is responsible for their own actions. I've been blessed in some aspects and taught some very harsh lessons in others.

Why.....Number one is because its a Christian forum!!! And that should be enough of a reason, and second yes I have much time to worry about people. As a minister and minstrel and foremost as a child of God its my responsibility to get out and bring Gods people back to him. I am so sorry you are just stuck on playing drums, but im not. I worry about every soul out there!!! There would be no purpose of me being here if I didn't attempt to bring souls to christ. I have never taken any unaccountability for myself and the things I do. People on here know me and no if im out of order, I will correct myself in a heartbeat. No one in this world is perfect, but just because we are not dosent mean we just stop preaching the word of God. This whole thing came about, because one person was worried about ones being, and now there is something wrong with that??? Its like you are trying to leave the GOSPEL out of LearnGospelMusic!!! And im pretty sure we all know what the word Gospel means!!!

as Christians you guys shouldnt be confessing this economy over your life. God has made promises in the Bible that says he will never leave us nor forsake us and that he will always provide for us and that our cups shall runneth over.
Confess your promises not what the world is telling you because we are not of this world we do not operate on the same principles as this world we operate on a higher power. words are the most powerful thing and the less looked after. the bible says life and death are in the power of the tongue, dont you think that your cell phone bill is a little less severe than life and death? in other words if you can cause life and cause death with your tongue im sure you can cause your cell phone bill which is something not even close to as important to be taken care of.
i'll stop now cause i could go for days.

Ay, I feel ya, but did you inquire about the monthly service fee, inclusive of taxes to determine if you could afford the plan, prior to accepting the terms and conditions? I tell people that being able to pay for something and being able to afford something are two different entites...
Being able to buy it means that you can pay for it (right now), but being able to afford it means that you're able to maintain it without encroaching on your "bill money" - you'd have enough DI (disposable income) to do what you wish.
