Do you think we're going into a Depression? If so, how do you think you will get thru it? Ever thought about this?
-
I don't really worry about stuff like that.
But, I don't have your typical "I have faith in God/My Father is rich in houses and land/My life is in His hands" response... I don't worry about stuff like that because I know that no matter what happens, I won't be homeless or hungry. If it gets so bad that I lose everything I have, I'll just rebuild. He blessed me once, He'll bless me again. :-\
Oh, and to answer the first question: no, I don't think we're heading toward a depression. But then again, there were some folks on here not long ago that ridiculed the idea that we were heading toward a recession and look at where we are today. :-\

I feel depression coming on but that doesn't have anything to do with the economy.

I know that's not funny, but it made me chuckle anyway... lol.
It's probably just the holidays. This time of year always gets me, too. :-\

It's ironic. I'm not a scaremonger, but a SCIFI book by Octavia Butler, I read some years ago, titled "Parable of the Sower", spoke of an economic collapse in 2009 that dropped the USA to Third World status--bad enough that the whole government fell apart.
It was a pretty good book, the sequel was "Parable of the Talents".

I with LaRue. I "try" not to worry about things I have no control over.
I believe that whatever may happen God's got my back..

Although the economy is not doing good, I would not call it a depression just yet. Im not saying it can't happen, but the unemployment rate in the great depression was like 25%. Also, banks were heavily unregulated during the great depression, and if im not mistaken, the federal reserve had not yet been created.
Currently, interest rates are very low, housing prices are low, the Fed just put billions of dollars back into the economy via banks, aka liquidity, and stimulus checks have been passed out. Under normal conditions, the current economic environment would be in trouble because of over spending, i.e. high inflation. This leads me to believe that consumer confidence is low and that people, understandingly, are decreasing their descretional spending. This in turn leads to a contraction of the funds that circulate in the economy and leads to businesses and government alike to make budget cuts.
In other words, the government are trying to bait you and me into to spending our money to get the economy on track. However, we have lost a lot of money in 401ks, watched the devaluation of homes, and we are trying to hold on unto every dollar that we have because we do not trust the current mechanics of the financial market.

Yeah, LaRue. I remember that conversation quite well! ;)

I wouldn't call it a depression, although that is the end result for many. Basically corporate America has been living above it's means and now big business is getting the collection calls. Of course they get the help while normal folks like us just have to suffer through. I would say the only positive thing that could come of this is that people will finally realize what is most important which varies from person to person.

Good point. It also serves as a notice to be prepared and have some money saved.

That's why I said it varied from person to person. Some people still don't get it and fall for all of these mega sales and think a low interest rate means go and spend. I have a relative that works for himself yet still lives high on the hog even though work is slow. But he's one who believes that visual presentation garners a cetain level of respect. And when someone is impressed, his job is done.

The 1929 stock market crash ushered in the Great Depression (eventually became world-wide) which lasted thru out the 1930s' and ended with WWII. The Federal Reserve came into existence in 1913, one year before WWI.

American money?

American money?
So should I start saving pesos?

you just wont let that go :D :-X :-X

I knew you would... lol.

I just hate it when people won't admit when they're wrong... lol. That irritates me. :D
I did make some progress, though. I had plenty more to say, but I left it at that one little statement. Wouldn't you call that progress? :-\ ;D :P :D

You have made GREAT PROGRESS, LaRue, and I'm proud of you. ;)
I WILL say, however, that THE PEOPLE ON THAT THREAD WHO WENT BACK AND FORTH WITH US ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THERE WAS A RECESSION: THEY WERE WRONG!!! I mean, this very thread is proof! We've gone from arguing about whether or not we're in a recession, to asking whether or not we're headed into a DEPRESSION!
Since they won't admit it themselves, I took care of it for them! Guess I haven't made as much progress as you have, sis! Pray for me. :D :D :D ;)
-
Was I pro-recession? I can't remember. I think I would've been though.
So...who's pro-depression?
I won a nickel betting that Obama would win the presidency; and a soda betting it would be a landslide.
I'm betting that this is not the end, but rather the beginning. Our economy is tied to our businesses, and many of them are running poorly; the car companies haven't been innovative since the 80s; the tech sector is selling American jobs to India; the graduation rate of our schools is dropping; and our banking industry is on its knees.
Right now, we're only seeing the effects of the banking industry--but wait until the rest of that mess kicks in. :o
Again, I'm not a scaremonger; and I don't believe that the USA is the ONLY country that is doing this, we just so happened to be one of the first affected.

OMG, you totally just made me spit sweet tea all over my desk... like, for real! Seriously. :D :D :D :D :D
Why take a course in humility when Loopy can just cram the lesson down your throat? :D :D :D

I can't remember what your stance was; but I'll go take a look and let you know.
Do you really think this is the beginning of a depression, or do you just think our recession is going to get worse before things get better? I can honestly say that I haven't really given it any thought since... well... see my first post in this thread. LOL. But, your comment has made me curious...

I just went through all 9 pages of that thread (which was, by the way, a big mistake ::) >:() and it appears you were missing in action for the entire discussion. It was in July; could that have been around the time when you took your leave of absence?
There was a follow-up discussion in September, but you kinda 'jacked that one and we ended up talking about scooters and bikes. :-\ ::)

Well, I think we're about to go thru one.

I remember the bikes thing now. You guys probably still think I'm crazy--just like with the small-house-RV-living thing.

I don't know if we're going to get into a depression, but I believe it'll be a stronger recession than it is now. Maybe we'll get out of this recession OK, but "the big one" is coming, if we (everyone, not just the USA) don't change our ways. Countries like New Zealand, and Greenland will probably do better than us, in the long run.
As for myself and my family, I know that even if a depression hit, and we couldn't buy food, that we'd be OK. Why? Not only am I multi-talented, and have a supportive and smart wife, but I know I'm protected by God. They could EMP the whole planet--like in The Day The Earth Stood Still, which was a SWEET movie--and my family would be just fine.

Dude, nobody even lives in Greenland. (relitivly)

I know. 58,000 people only fill up a few blocks, in Detroit; but they still are being more innovative with their infrastructure.
How about every home gets hot water from the city. I know, they probably couldn't pump it any other way! ;D ;D
