Beat it - michael jackson

I have to disagree with this.  "Beat It" is well known guitar riff with bass support.  My list of famous bass lines include:

1. "China Girl" - David Bowie
2. "I Can't Wait" - New Shooz
3. "Leave It" - Yes
4. "When The Beat Goes On" - The Whispers
5. "Shining Star" - Earth Wind & Fire

...Lovely Day - Bill Withers...

I think Bill Withers did one with Grover Washington - Just the two of us; that's a bassline that the older crowd might recognize right away.

Hollywood Swingin' - Kool & The Gang

Hollywood Swingin' I agree with; but what's so special about the bassline from Too Hot?  It's a great song, but to me the bass line by itself doesn't stand out much from similar jazz/r&b songs of the era.

There's absolutely nothing great about it. But play 6 notes and most people will recognize the song.  I think that's what the original poster was asking about.  What basslines are easily recognizable by non-musicians.  Nothing could be simpler than "Another One Bites The Dust" or "Slide", but I bet 9 ou of 10 people would recognize them quickly.

Nobody mentioned Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll by Vaughan Mason & Crew; that bassline sounds somewhat similar to Good Times.

I lot of people might not recognize this song until they hear it.
The younger generation would know it if you said "Hypnotize" by Biggie Smalls.

lots of great basslines but how could y'all forget "For The Love of Money" by The O'Jays or did I just miss that.  By the way the bassline for My Girl is often mistaken for the guitar lick not that all Jamerson's basslines aren't great.  As for other great basslines I don't know if these are as recognizable by non bass players but all the lines of James Jamerson are great... how about Bernadette by the Four Tops and Don't Mess With Bill by The Marvelettes as just two examples.  and add these non Jamerson but great bass groves.....
Personally - Artist Jackie Moore not sure who the bass player is
What Is Hip - Tower of Power (Rocco Prestia)
Kinky Reggae (live version) - The Wailers (Aston "Family Man" Barrett)
Until You Come Back - Aretha Franklin (I think it's Jerry Jermott on bass)
A Nickel And A Nail - O.V. Wright (good example of Memphis Willie Mitchell production bass, Leroy Hodges)
and if you can find this one it's worth the listen....All By Myself - Daryl Hall (from the Can't Stop Dreaming Album, not sure who the bass player is but his tone and playing are fat and sweet)
now these might not be the most technically difficult basslines but if you listen to them they all have one sweet groove. and yes they are all kind of very old school but then so am I, LOL oh and most of them are not that famous either but if your a bass player you should give em a listen.
