Title: The Black Man and the television
Post by: sjonathan02 on March 11, 2009, 06:36:40 AM
So, my friend and I were listening to Cybil Wilkes (from The Tom Joyner Morning Show) and heard about D.L. Hugley and David Allen Grier being out of a job (with CNN and Comedy Central, respectively).

Cybil went on to say that a writer from the Baltimore Sun wrote about how this was a big deal. Yada, yada, yada, it got us to thinking, 'How many Black men ARE there on television, now?'

We came up with 15 that we either watch or about which we know.  :o :(

Hill Harper (CSI: NY)

Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds)

Alimi Ballard (Numb3rs)

Allan Louis (Privileged)

Tristan Wilds (90210)

James Pickens, Jr. (Grey's Anatomy)

Taye Diggs (Private Practice)

Mario Van Peeples (Damages)

Clarke Peters (Damages)

The Men of 'House of Payne (6 brothas with at least 20 episodes)

So, I ask, LGM family,

a. Is there a cause for concern?

b. Can you think of any brothas we have missed to add to this list?

I don't think there is a cause for concern. From what I read on Blackvoices D.L.'s program wasn't good at all. If you don't have a good product or viewers, what is expected?

Ice-T....Law/Order
Blackmen on soap operas

That's SVU... The new Law and Order has old dude from Barber Shop, can't remember his name.

I think most shows have at least one token black man.  House has that dude (sorry, I'm bad about actor names)

My name is Earl has that Snoop lookin' guy

The Office even has a token black man, actually a couple.

Dude on ER just got killed last year, lol.

That's all I can think of right now, but like I said, it seems PC to have one token black person and one token gay person... idk how I feel about it, but it's becoming more and more true.

You're right about the soaps.  They all have a token black couple, who are only allowed to fall in love with each other, LOL!  I guess their scared to tackle the interracial thing.

The only reason I'd say there might be cause for concern is that there's no basis for a similar thread entitled "The White Man and the television."  White men are all over television and black men are not.  :-\

My input:
1. I watch a lot of news.  One of the first things I noticed and loved about moving to Atlanta is that about half to a majority of the news reporters and anchors are black.  CNN also has a few black men reporting and anchoring.

2. Is Omar Epps still on House?  If so, you missed him.

3. You also may have missed any black men on daytime television.  I don't keep up with soaps, but last I heard, Angie and Jesse were back on AMC.

4. The court shows have Joe Brown and Greg Mathis.

5. And as someone else pointed out, DL's show wasn't so great.  I was pulling for him to succeed, but I knew from the first promo I saw that it wasn't going to last long.  He was way out of his element, and he's not really that funny to begin with.  :-\  But for what it's worth, both he and CNN reported that his show wasn't cancelled for the ratings.  Both sides said that he asked to relocate to LA to be closer to his family, so they are continuing the working relationship with him, but he can't do the show from LA.  (Of course we know that if the show rocked, he wouldn't want to go back to LA, nor would CNN let him).

Am I the only one that feels more "ok" with a Black guy and White lady, versus a White guy and Black lady?

It's always a shock to me.

Maybe its because more than half the people in ATL are black. Thats a very high percentage compared to other major cities.

Care to elaborate? possibly in a new topic. I think that would be an interesting discussion.

I wonder if it's because the black guy/white lady seems to be more common.  I won't say I'm more "ok" with it, but the other arrangement does usually make me look twice, or think twice or something... lol.

Over the weekend, I was out to breakfast and saw a very affluent-looking interracial family.  He was white, she was black.  I declare if she didn't have those two babies with her, I'd have sworn she was the nanny.  He looked like a CEO-type.  Looked like he used $100 bills to wipe his mouth after dinner.  I mean, you could smell money on him when he walked by.  She appeared to be African.  She was beautiful in a motherly sort of way, and he was far from attractive, IMO, but he was well-dressed.  She was well-dressed too, but her hair left a little to be desired.  Her ring had to be at least $25k, if not more.

Anyway, it was really odd-looking to me.  And a friend pointed out that if she was white and he was black, I wouldn't have looked twice.  And of course, she was right.

The only reason
5. Yep D.L's show was no good at all. (Sorry D.L). I watched it twice and was not sure what to think. Is it a talk show (a la Jay Leno) or what? Plus Mme Rue is right, the fellow was very much out of his element. The show brought nothing new now was it even funny.  :-\

...David Allen Grier being out of a job (with CNN and Comedy Central, respectively).

Now this i am a bit surprised about. The show was a bit too over the top for me but i still found it funny. Any reason why it was canceled?

CNN also has a few black men reporting and anchoring.

Like that Tony Harris guy who i cannot STAND!! Why does he over-exaggerate his words by using all sorts of funny inflections? I can't stand to listen to him for long.

I think T.J Holmes and that other guy, Don (or Dan?) Lennon are much better.

I DID forget about Omar Epps (and I LOVE 'House').

I forgot about Anthony Anderson on Law & Order.

I thought Ice-T was about to leave or be fired from L/O which is why I didn't add him to the list.

I also eliminated soaps from the equation, though I don't really have a good reason as to why we did.  :-\ :D

I can't for the life of me think of why you would have a problem with that, lol.  Many black men for the longest have been telling us that we're too this, and too that, and that's why they prefer white girls.  I say what's good for the goose... LOL

Yeah, I'm sure that's why. It was such a welcome surprise, having come from NY where we may have had maybe 1 black anchor and 1 or 2 black reporters... of course, NY is ahead with its lack of low-budget commercials.  I went into shock the first time I saw one of those.  :D :D :D

Now that I think about it, though.  They say the whole black guy/white girl thing comes from back in the day when the massa used to get with the slave girls and as a result it is the black man's way of getting revenge.  If that's the case that initial sting may still exist.

As to Rue's comment about the affluent interracial couple.  I find that very often when a black girl is with a white man, her hair has... er... uh... "issues", as does the children's hair many times.  Why is that, I wonder?

There was/is something in the story line that has Fen asking for a transfer after something Stabler did to him or his son, if I remember correctly.

Well, it was good while it lasted.  If tradition holds, they'll replace him with another black guy or girl.

Considering that most black men often date the trashiest and ugliest white women (just to say they have a white women), I really dont think it "stings" the white men  at all.

Hey, now that I think about it, you may be right.  But, I'll say this: from what I've seen, the kids' hair looks much better when the mom is black than when the mom is white (usually).  I'm sure that's simply because the black woman can deal with that hair texture easier than the white woman can.

And that first point is a good one, too.

OK i totally have to agree with this observation cuz i have noticed it too many times. Black guy/white girl couples almost always have the fat (sorry) white girl and the OK black guy. I always wondered why that was. I think i only saw it once on the metro there was this black guy with this drop dead gorgeous white girl. Surprised the heck outta me i can tell you that.  :-\

Exactly.

You see interracial couples a lot in the military--especially ones with Asian wives.

I saw this one Black girl with a Korean dude. I was like :o.

I wanted to comment about the "sting" but I didn't want to put it in my initial post. After the shock, that's the second thing I think about: slavery.

Yeah, I guess that could play a role in the feelings one gets when they see certain couples.

I could see myself with a latino, and a few very select white guys... never pictured myself with an asian guy, though.  LOL, nothing offensive, it just never even crossed my mind.

I also like pacific islanders (tongans, samoans, etc), they seem like cousins to black folks, lol.  So do Puerto Ricans, lol.

b. Can you think of any brothas we have missed to add to this list?

a.  For black male actors, yes.  For the television audience...possibly...if they believe everything they see on TV.

b.  It seems that most black men are on BET as rappers, hype men, random video dudes, and show hosts.  I think that it adds to a negative black male stereotype if most black men are seen degrading women.  The other black men on TV aren't even actors (or they're not supposed to be) like the guys on Maury, on the news, etc.

Who's 13?

We were just talking on FB the other day about how so many girls from my HS had black moms and Japanese dads.  That's not necessarily common in my hometown, but for some reason, there were about 20-25 kids in my HS that came from Black/Jap homes.  :-\

I don't think I could ever date an Asian man.  I could do the white guy thing (but not the blue eyed/blonde dude) or the Dominican or Puerto Rican... maybe a Cuban, and definitely a Spaniard.  But that's about it.

It's nothing against the race; I just think the cultures and features are way too different for my taste.

I could almost see myself with a white girl. Heck i've even thought about it a couple of times too. I could not see myself with an Asian though. Its also nothing racist, just that they are too different. If i were "in the world" then i would not care who i see myself with. But since i am not, i am more selective.

As things stand now, i can only see myself with a black woman. To be honest, there are very few non-black women who attract me. I just love the way black women look.

Ya'll go lookin' in your TV Guide or somethin'?  :D

Ness, half the shows you mentioned are OFF the air. Although, I did forget about Det. Daniels on 'The Closer' (which I just love, btw).

Teej, this list is strictly for those actors who have major roles....black terrorists don't count because Jack kills them befo' the hour's ova.  :D

I JUST remember Dennis Haysbert from the next greatest show on television today, THE UNIT!!  8)

No, I just started thinkin' about shows I watch.  Which ones are off the air?  That could well be, because a lot of the TV I watch is not prime time, I catch quite a few shows in reruns on cable.

But I know Zack and Cody are still around, and the Simpson's LOL (not that animated black people count).

And what's wrong with Rob and Big?  LOL!

Now, hold up...the dudes on Baldwin Hills play a pretty major role...and it's Reality TV, so you KNOW they gotta be acting.

The Simpson's have Dr. Hibbard (or something), and Homer's co-worker...

Futurerama has Hermes and Family Guy has Cleveland.  Cleveland was about to get his own show but that fell flat.

I don't watch alot of TV because of the shortage of  Black men & women. Yeah, you will find some brothas or sistas on a white show or a black comedy. The last good drama on TV with an all black cast was "City of Angels", now that was an excellent TV show, but it only lasted I think about two episodes. I couldn't even sit down & watch a TV show with an all white cast. David allen Greir's TV show was definetly over the top, but it was pretty funny, but DL Hughly is not politicly savvy enough to have that type of show.  But in all, Thats "pretty sad" when you can list the names of the Black men on TV.

Let's just say that it's interesting that some of us can't seem to keep things going while people like the Jacka**/Wildboyz crew and shows with much less social value thrive.  As for those "reality" shows, the only thing real is the actual people.

I'm also a little perturbed by the representation of Black men on soap operas.  On Y&R, outside of Neil Winters, every other Black man they show is either in law enforcement or some kind of civil service.  So I guess Neil is the only Black man in Genoa City with some money.  Funny thing is his family is still jacked up.  His own daughter is jumping from (White)man to man.  Aint no brothers she can date?  I've stopped watching it because that whole town is stupid.

Scrubs has moved from NBC to ABC with new episodes.  Apparently all the while it was on NBC, it was being produced by and filmed at ABC, so when NBC dropped it, they kept it.

I'm surprised at you. You usually keep up with that kinda stuff more than I do.  Angela Bassett and Courtney Vance have been married for years now.  They recently had twins (I think about two years ago).  Well, I think they adopted them, but still... it made the news. LOL

I can't for the life of me think of why you would have a problem with that, lol.  Many black men for the longest have been telling us that we're too this, and too that, and that's why they prefer white girls.  I say what's good for the goose... LOL

Note: I haven't read the rest of this thread....but I don't think B3W had a problem...an observation was being made. This has been addressed in other web sites(hair sites) I visit. You really don't see BW/WM couples and much as WW/BM couples.

I think she was only kidding.  Well, I don't know if she was kidding, but I don't think she meant "problem" in the serious sense of the word.  We followed those comments with a very lighthearted discussion about interracial dating. It's all good.  ;)

He was the DA on L&W: Criminal Intent, but I thought he ended that role a couple years ago.  Definitely by the time it moved to cable.

So, my friend and I were listening to Cybil Wilkes (from The Tom Joyner Morning Show) and heard about D.L. Hugley and David Allen Grier being out of a job (with CNN and Comedy Central, respectively).

Cybil went on to say that a writer from the Baltimore Sun wrote about how this was a big deal. Yada, yada, yada, it got us to thinking, 'How many Black men ARE there on television, now?'

We came up with 15 that we either watch or about which we know.  :o :(

Hill Harper (CSI: NY)

Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds)

Alimi Ballard (Numb3rs)

Allan Louis (Privileged)

Tristan Wilds (90210)

James Pickens, Jr. (Grey's Anatomy)
Taye Diggs (Private Practice)

Mario Van Peeples (Damages)

Clarke Peters (Damages)

The Men of 'House of Payne (6 brothas with at least 20 episodes)

So, I ask, LGM family,

a. Is there a cause for concern?

b. Can you think of any brothas we have missed to add to this list?
