Title: Is it just me?

Do you hate when people that can not play and/or no nothing about music try to tell you how to play a certain thing or teach a certain part?  Me and another musician were discussing this issue and I thought I would hear some of you comments on this issue.

I know what you mean.  There has been a lot of people trying to tell me how to play a song and don't even know how to play mary had a little lamb.  I just ignore them because some church folk want to be in control of everything.  I don't let no one tell me how to play, besides Jesus.   :D  :D  :)  8)

LOL....at my old church, this lady told me "Give me some articulation".  What she meant was pounding on the piano.  

Or, when they say: "That don't sound right---that's not like the record."  Help me Jesus cause I'm about to trip!  Excuse me, that is an entire band and I am one person.

I think we've all been there at some point. I'll admit it would hurt my feelings, but I got over it. Like when I first started to play for my old church, many people would tell me I need to add some "umph" to my hymns, it just got to the point where I said, "Look, no offense to you, but I can't play it whatever way you want me to, that's not what's in the hymnal. What's in the hymnal is what I'm playing, but I'm sure with time as I grow to learn more about gospel music, I'll play the hymns with whatever "umph" you're talking about, but in the meantime I'll play it the way that I'm comfortable playing unless you're willing to help me learn?"

Of course, they couldn't offer help because they couldn't play an instrument so they left me alone. Sometimes you just have to tell those people that people play on all levels, and with time and God's blessing, you'll get there, but in the meantime, they have to deal with what you have and be grateful that you're willing to share your talent with the church that God bestowed on you.

I hate that too.  Especially when you are Minister of music and members are trying to tell you how to run the musician corner and so forth.  They don't have a clue on how to do anything..so I just say, if you know how it is to be done, ask the pastor to give you my job..till then, do what God called you to do and stop worrying about me :!:

I hate this also. Some people just don't know how it is being a musician. Staying up late, learning music, and taking critism from people who don't know a thing about music. I just ask God to give me patience. Sometimes I just feel like saying if you think you can do it better, then come do it! :D

I once had a person, who could not play, tell me that I was not playing the song right, so I got off of the organ and "politely" told them to show me the way it should be done.
