Title: Keyboard Chording Help on a Song Called Saved
Post by: jasonkthomas on April 01, 2009, 10:56:09 PM
Can someone help me figure out what's going on with the chording / fingering in this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcjuC016c68 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcjuC016c68)

Particularly, from segment 0:16 - 0:25, which also covers the chorus.

Thanks

It's not as hard as you think.  There is a very simple technique being used in this song.  What he's doing is switching back and forth between the minor 1 chord and the 4 chord.

Since the song is in Bb, it would help to know what the minor 1 and 4 chord is for this key.  Here they are:

Bb minor 1 chord: Bb-Db-F (Bb minor)
Bb 4 chord: Eb-G-Bb (Eb major)

Now that we got that, here's a little chord practice you can do to get your chords to sound like the video:

[1] Bb /
[an] / Db-F-Bb
[2] Bb
[an] / Eb-G-Bb
[3] Bb / Db-F-Bb
[4, e, an] Bb / Eb-G-Bb
[a] / Db-F-Bb
(repeat)

The idea here is to keep the Bb going in your LH on every beat while the RH does a syncopated rhythm.  Start real slow, then pick up speed as you get more comfortable.

This chord technique is used a lot in Congregational songs. Here's a link to more information on this topic:  http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,32178.0.html (http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,32178.0.html)

Like what T-block said. It's the same for the 4 and you could the same on the 5 as well. It's kinda like shouting music somewhat.
