this is CRAAAAZZZYY!!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg)
I cannot express the shear joy I have being able to watch this.
-
Is this song played at every concert or is this a rehearsal clip?
-
Oh, there's GOT to be a part 2 to this one!! This cat is truly blessed! I don't think I've ever heard anyone with such a melodic style of groove! Man, he's 'runs' for days!
-
this is the gray boys annual Christmas concert.
I don't think I'll ever get sick of his playing.
-
I don't think I'll ever get sick of his playing.
....AND THE CHURCH SAID AAAAAAAAAAAMEN!
His playing never ceases to amaze me. So sick, yet so smooth. If I was playin grooves like that I've have bass face for days lol
Be Blessed,
J
-
i was just watching the other clip of him doing this song on my Zune yesterday. i cant help but notice that he plays it entirely different, yet smooth as butter. to kill a song like he did and then kill it again entirely different. geez. and its insane because i look at his hands and its like he's not doing much, but what you hear u like nah, that cant be. but the 4:35 mark gives the proof: its in the shoes!! lol.
well, can anybody ever tape these things with better quality?
-
Fender just needs to go ahead and develop the Sharay Reed Signature model. MAN!!!!!!!
-
Yeah, he's a bad boy. He's has some of the best runs/fills i've ever heard, his note selection is just amazing. Thanks for sharing, I can listen to that all day.
-
What you have to look at is my man sitting right in front of him. He doesn't know what to do with his bass strapped around his neck, he swallows his pride and gently unstraps it and lays it on the floor as if to say "I need to give him my totally undevided attention and learn something at this moment". Then, my man even makes some "bass faces" as if he is playing the jam himself like "sharay, you need to look like this on them chords man" :o
-
Great Grovve ;)

HAHAH,
That's BJ. He played with New Direction at one point and is currently Playing with Lionel Ritchie.
There are a bunch of monster players right there. You have Varo, Rodney Jones, BJ and a host of others.

This is sooo tiighttt!!. What else is great are his fills man-totally nailed them -not too little, not too much - just puurrrffeecct !! Thanks for posting this ;D

2:08 simply sick...
Going home to make some furniture out of my equipment. :-\

I made some very decorative "Axe" handles if anyone is intersed....
He makes it look so effortless.....

TRUUUUUUUUTH! But I don't think he was playing a fender in this vid.

That's a fender.

His style of playing is so unique it's like a mix with the old and new. And he keeps it so simple, but so intricate..... WOW!!!

LOL!
Somebody somewhere in that church, cursed at that very moment...
-
This is tight and the lick at the 2:11 mark is so SWEET!
-
It looks like they are missing a choir member.
-
After watching this terrific video and playing along to learn that lick at 2:11, I realize he tunes a whole step down. I tune a half step down so my lowest note is Bb. His lowest not is A.

is this how u guys get so much better? by transcribing things like this?
well i got the first 17 seconds ok 4 minutes and 50 seconds left. lol.

lol, if it was that easy to blaze a fretboard like Sharay without putting in time and hard work (and muuuuuuuch prayer) then none of us would ever post here. We'd be too busy out playing major gigs lol

That harmonic riff around 2:26 was so subtle yet soooo tasty. Dude is just riddiggilous. I need to practice!

Not that I'm any good but, if something is too hard for me to learn, I usually copy the audio and run it through Transcribe (to slow it down).
-
I usually record it to my computer and slow it down in Audicity without changing the pitch and loop it over and over and over..... Or you can also slow it down in Widows media player on Vista. Once you listen to it 100 times you figure out what he's doing. That's how I was taught to learn. Listen to it and break the run down into parts and learn those parts SLOWLY then once you get comfortable speed it up.

I have to disagree with this. One of my friends can play Sharay out his socks but he choose to just play for fun and not make a career out of it. I know personally for a fact he turned down a job in Detroit making $1200 a Sunday because he didn't want it to become looked at as a job. Just like it's a lot of Micheal Jordans out there that never got their shot. Go to the park and shoot ball. It's some guys out there who can play but they never had a good head on their shoulder or never had the chances MJ had.
-

Dude just let his blessing slide past him.

$1200 a Sunday?! Is anyone really making that kind of change?

im fairly sure his bass is tuned standard (beadg). the intro where he's doing those harmonics is over an open E. not to nitpick or anything lol, just pointing it out
-

Not necessarily... but that's a different topic.

I guess you might be right if you going by the harmonics. I was trying to look at his hand. Since I tune to flats, that might be why my harmonics sound a half step down when I was trying to do what he did.
Dude just let his blessing slide past him.
Maybe but he and the majority of his family lives here in MS. So he would have had to more over a 1000 miles away. Also he plays at his mother's church. Actually all the brothers play there so it's more of a I guess family thing. Sometimes money isn't everything. That's what my Pastor told me when I told him I might venture out to play at another church making twice what I make now. I decided not to be a month later, he took a little pay cut in order for the church to raise my pay. I've never once asked my church to pay me. Now if someone calls me to ask me to play, I charge. If they say never mind, it's cool because I got a amp at the house I can play on all night if I want to and won't have to move any equipment.

Yes sir! You must don't know the salary of some of these musicians at these large churchs? They get paid good. I'm not talking bout mega churches either. I heard, now don't hold me to it, I head that Bishop Paul Morton's bass player gets like in the $30-40 thousand a year. But the thing is he's under contract with the church so therefore he can't play for anybody else but them.
-

dude, you read my mind word for word. ive been thought-jacked.

You're right, I really don't know! I come from a really small traditional Methodist church that only has a pianist/organist (my mother) and a 5 person choir!! My mother does get paid but she does other duties as well for the church but I know it's not a lot.
-

true, however $1200 a week in Detroit is some MAJOR bread seeing how you can get a NICE house for 100K. pretty much new construction
Everyone has a different calling, but had it been me (after some serious praying and hoping that God said yes) I would've taken that $62400 annual pay and found a normal full time Job and enjoyed the doors that had been opened for me.
My wife would love to not have to work.

so if he in need of extra money (because $40K isnt a whole heap of money), he has to get a regular job, but nothing that high paying because his time is obligated to Paul Morton, so he basically in the same boat as most of us, just reverse, if you really think about it. So many of us are just as blessed, so think about that if ur ever feeling a bit discouraged (i know i get that way from time to time).
-
(i know i get that way from time to time).
not to side track, but what exactly is discouraging?
-
not to side track, but what exactly is discouraging?
because everybody doesnt make big dollars playing and people will try to discourage you from playing where your playing because you're not. or try to suggest that the price justifies their calling but not yours. trust me, whether you've experienced it or not, it happens all the time. as if the Lord is blessing/using someone more because of that, when it could be that God sees that u dont need it because he's already blessed you elsewhere and wants you to be in the places he needs you.
i really feel that someone here (whether we know them or not) is facing that right now. im sure a lot of us have at one point or another.

I second that motion. My "normal full time job" would be study work. That's where bread is made as well.
-
I like playing bass for fun. I don't know but sometimes I believe that if I HAD to play for my family to eat it wouldn't be as fun anymore. Maybe it's just me. I mean I'm not a big fan of always traveling and leaving your family for months on the time. Some people love it but I don't think I would. Going somewhere every now and again wouldn't bother me but being gone all the time would bother me because I'm a family guy and I love eating Sunday dinner with my family down my Grandmother's house every Sunday!! LOL!!

i feel you bro,
however if it's a steady gig at a church and not with artist that's a totally different scenario.
-
One other thing though, if you are loving what you do, then the fun will never leave. I myself once wanted to be a traveling musician, but I'm a family man and love spending time with my family, so I decided not to pursue that. I do get paid for playing at my church and I enjoy it. As long as I'm playing my instruments, everything is fun and I'm happy.

I make $1200....for the whole year. ::)

I have to agree with you on this one Jeremy. Money isn't the most important thing in the world but if I was ever offered a contract gig making $1200/week I'd do some very sincere praying and soul searching.
(plus a brotha's single and loves to travel LOL....Lord please say YES and make a way ;D)

And that right there is the key. Just make sure that if God says no you don't come back like "umm... was that really you Lord or was that da debbil? Run that by me one mo' 'gain..." ;)

am i missing something, or am i the only person who would figure that $1200 a week comes with some other obligations more than just 3 hours on a sunday? to the point where u can work a full-time job and neither interferes with the other. thats quite a lot for NO extra obligations (meaning time spent/required).

Obviously, we know that rehearsals are part of this, but its doesn't take up 40 hours of your regular work week. I'll definitely look into something like this if the opportunity came my way.

well no, it doesnt take up 40 hours. that i know. but for a church that can afford all the musicians $1200 a week and better (im sure the bass player isnt the ONLY one gettin that kind of money) that they having more than 1 sunday morning service and 1 weekly rehearsal for just 1 choir. and with the time spent in service or rehearsal, time at work for 40 hours (or more) and time spent practicing, im sure sleep and personal time are fighting for their fair share. sometimes i dont have enough hours in the day so i know somebody makin that would reasonably feel more pressure. and how many times can you say "i cant make rehearsal because i gotta work late" before they cut ur pay or get rid of you? how many times can you tell your job i cant come in or gotta leave early because i got rehearsal?
these are the kinds of things i ponder, because often when u dont consider these things and ask questions, these are the finer details you find out the hard way.

(6580 plays later)
My gosh this is good1

Valid points, floaded. We've visited the subject of compensation here more than once, and every church is different. You can't even apply geography to it, as two different musicians in, say, Detroit, could be earning two radically different salaries (but they could also have two different sets of obligations).
Not to hijack this thread but I do have a question: who should earn more, a musician or a Minister of Music? Becuause in my church, one musician earns more per week that my MOM earns for the whole month. And that ain't right. >:(
-
Churches will offer whatever they can to get certain players in place. There was a young lady that played bass for one of the larger churches here in Nashville. I never got to hear her play, but word was she was extra-super-duper-stupid-fresh-ice-cold with the axe. They actually flew her in every weekend(I think she was from D.C. or somewhere up north), and flew her back home Sunday evening. If they took that expense for a bass player when we have a plethora of gifted players here, you know the money had to be ridiculous too.
Oh, I sent this and 2 other videos to my best friend who is one of the baddest players here in town. He is loving Sharay Reed. He said he is very inspired by this dude. He's asked me to send him more videos.

In all honsety, for $1200 a week, you really wouldn't need to work anywhere else, unless you wanted to pick up a part time job or gig.

I would be a cart boy at the local Meijer and target and do some freelance work on the side.
64K is alot of moolah! Heck. I would be a lifeguard in the summer time at the local pool and still be living good...LOL!!!

I feel ya on that one J. I'll wear a speedo for that one. LOL!!! Not!!!

Doc, I gotta say you've been on point this week! This is the second time I've had to quite you (on the same page!!!) and say "yep, ol' deacon jeremy's rite again"
Cause @ $4800/mo this brotha would be living in the overflow and enjoying a very comfortable life. Shoot, I'd pay the clark sisters to call me every other morning and sing "livin" as my theme song. lol

Preach that thang brother!!!! That's some nice bread for doing something that you love. Plus when you are doing what you love, obligations are not seen as burdens, at least they don't to me. I don't view them as obligations.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!
If you were in Detroit you could just drop over their house and have breakfast as they sang to you.

$1200 a Sunday?! Is anyone really making that kind of change?
I've heard of a Guy in Houston, who is making twice, that... He is the Father of a friend of my older brothers...
-
I guess it depends on everyone's situation...
To some markets, 64k is alot of money, in other places, 64k ain't George and Weezy money :)
I personally would even consider a pay cut, to be able to play full time. I would probably do some consulting work on the side, but all the scenarios would have to be right.
1.) Personal growth in the ministry
2.) Quality of living in the city (in that tax bracket) If it were in NY or LA, they would probably have to (Triple my Salary ;D)
3.) Time constraints
4.) No travel/Family time is too important.
-
To me, getting paid $64K to play a bass would be like getting $2 million to dribble a basketball. ;D
-
Lol!!! This thread went from talking about Sharay to $1200. Too funny!!!!

i love programming and thats what i do for a living, but i must tell you all the time it isnt fluffy clouds and rainbows, simply because i love it. there are times when i just want a break but i have to do what i have to do because im getting paid to do it. but thats not always the case. i would assume that bass would be the same way for me. there are some sundays i dont even feel like playing in church, or coming to rehearsal, or going out to some other church, etc. it happens
If it were in NY or LA, they would probably have to (Triple my Salary ;D)
i think this is where im catchin heat from the other guys in here. im not just in NY but New York City, NY (the big-time). lol. $64K aint really overflow here. and they been pricing us outta here like crazy. my bad ya'll. i have to take it from a different perspective than "NYC living". lol.
-
Man...I'm upset that I left my axe at home...I definitely need to get back to Germany

Getting back to the subject. Anybody heard Sharray on Maurette Brown Clark's version of "One GOD"? If you haven't, I'd suggest you check it out ASAP.

There is another version by Darien Dennis with Adam Johnson tearing up the bass. It was a more melodic version of the song.

Maybe the B string is tuned down a whole step. Dropped tunings are fairly common where you have one string tuned lower than normal pitch while the others are in standard tuning.

THIS DUDe IS A MONSTER!! ITHINK I FIGURED OUT THAT RUN AT 2:18...lol thanks sharay i will be using that quite often!!!!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yo, I saw this clip on YouTube and instantly picked up my bass and started practicing, THAT BOY GOOD!!!!
-
I could just watch and listen over and over again!!! :o You can't even get "air" between him and the drummer; just a tight, tight groove!!!
