So, does this mean you will be playing the acoustic piano or organ instead?  Or are you giving up all forms altogether?

You just don't know how bad I want to get back on drums. I miss playing them and I am very rusty cause of playing boards. I just want to take a break from them and hit the skins for a bit.

i stopped playing the keys but i am getting my keys back so i can start practicing again for fun not for church reason. The church i go to now has two key board players already. But i do play the drums more now too every friday i play for the service. i am thinking about picking up my bass again and play.

I don't think I could ever retire from the keys...I might pick up a new instrument but it would never replace the keys. I play 9 instruments so far and 7 are collecting dust...

....I really want to learn how to play the sax sooooo bad!!!

I wouldn't "Retire" from keyboard or any instrument, per se. That sounds sort of silly, to me. I'd probably shift my main focus, sort of like I did when I went from drums to keys. Right now I'm trying to do a little 80% keyboard, 20% Lead Guitar. I, too, want to pick drums back up eventually, but we'll see.

As for this thread:  ::)

I agree...lets be serious.

Besides, one doesn't retire from an instrument. A piano player will always be a piano player(organ, keyboard etc)...you may move on to another instrument...or maybe even retire from playing piano at churches....but to retire from the instrument itself means you won't play that instrument again....and WE ALL KNOW THAT AIN'T HAPPENING  ;D

Ummm...maybe you'd have wanted to see me in 2003  :D. Besides doing a few fill-ins for surrounding churches whose drummer couldn't make the service, I haven't actively played the drums in 5 years. Can you say rusty?  :D

Hopefully I can get a kit one of these days, though, so I can get back into it.

I really dont care for the drums at all. I would like to learn a little, just so I'm versatile.

I was thinking about this thread....

...I seriously hope and pray that we're not encouraging anyone to retire from the keys.....

...I mean this is the Gospel Keyboard/Piano room :-\

It's great to add a new instrument but....ya know....I think that even the greatest musician is never done learning....

              I would like to apologize...

...I don't like trying to get my point across online because although I'm serious about what I just said, I'm not  >:( >:( >:( ya know?

...so I'll put this smiley at the end... :) :) :) (or 3)

Man, I haven't played with a bass player on a regular basis since 2001...*sigh*

You and me both.  I think I'm the only keyboard player in this area (S.E. VA) that doesn't play the drums.

u guys dont get it and thats cool but for me whenever i want to do i can go at it but if i dont focus on it it will be hard to accomplish. im not as young as i used meaning im no longer the sponge i was when 1st learning keys. also if i dont stop playing keys then i will keep getting calls to play key and ill never get calls for playing bass like i want to.

Well you didnt explain it to us. :D You just made it sound like you're quitting being a musician, I had no Idea you played bass. People still gonna be buggin you to play keys; its not something people usually just quit doing. God bless you in whatever you do.

That's where ur wrong man.  People know u can play keys already, so u gonna always get calls for that.  U might as well just accept it.  I completely understand u man cuz I wanna get calls to play bass, but I'm always getting calls for keys.

Now I even got a call to be a speaker and I don't want to be behind nobody pulpit.  Usually things we don't want to do is the very thing God will lead u to do.  So maybe this is God's way of saying He wants u to stay on the keys while pursuing ur bass dreams.

I like to rotate between instruments.

I play what I feel like playing, and what the church has room for me to play.

If all the main instruments were taken, I'd play flute or some minor instrument. It doesn't matter to me, as long as I'm given room to play.

I would neva eva 4 neva give up the keys. But i would love to get back 2 the drums. I play them every now and then when im at the church by myself practicing. I played the trumpet from 4th-8th grade but havent pick it up since. I really want to learn to play bass and sax. But i will stay on the keys untill the good Lord calls my name

The only reason you should retire from an instrument
it's because you have mastered it. And we all know that is impossible to do.

Some people pick one instrument and only play that one.

I started playing the Trumpet in Jr. High.

Then I started on the drums and was our main drummer for a few years.

Then I started on the Organ and Keys.  Our keys player left late last year and I've been our ONLY keys/organ guy since.

I want to learn Sax and Guitar.

There's only one of me though, and with a wife and daughter there isn't enough time to learn all the instruments I'd like to learn.

Man, once you get music in you you're DONE.

I feel you, i wouldnt call it retired. I also would like to pick up the bass, and put more time into playing drums. I thinks its cool, you would be able to play anytime almost anywhere when you can play 3 or 4 instruments, go for it!

I kinda understand where the O.P. is coming from. I'm going to do the same thing!!!
Right now I am currently the M.O.M. in my father's church. I am very well taken care of and in demand as a keyboardist/organist. But that is not where my passion lies!!!  It resides in those bass strings!!!  It's rare that a day goes by and I don't have my bass in my hands. I've never EVER felt this way about keys. I'm just polishing up my skills and waiting for that opportunity for a spot in a growing church that needs a bassist. It's gonna break my Dad's heart, (he also wants me to take over the church eventually) but I have to follow my heart. I'm not that young anymore and I have a goal of where I wanna be as a bass player in a few years. Gonna hang up the keys.....
