Actually I'm in the middle of trying to persuade my church into getting a new kit. I came across this website to show them the different ranges of drumsets.
Here it goes http://www.2112online.com/compdrum.shtml
It's missing some of the major brands and it is a little outdated, but I hope that this helps.

I am a dw man, i support them and i play play dw drums, to me its the best in the business.
ok! for a beginner get them a 5 piece pacific drum made by dw.
10, 12, 14in-unless you wanna go old school 12-13-16in, but they come in fusion style. cymbals- very important, you wanna get good long lasting cymbals, Get the zildjian Avedis A custom series. just get the highhats, one 14" crash and a 18" ride.
an intermedaite kit, and expert.
dw collection series,6 or 7 piece, and a good drummer that plays first for God and plays with his heart.

Beginners/Intermediate..I suggest Pearl Export Select..10,12,14,or16 floor
Zildjian A custom hats 13'...Zildjian A custom crashes 15' and 17' or
16' and 18'..Zildjian A Earth Ride 20'..Zildjian A China Low 16'..10'splash
Or a Yamaha Stage Custom with same setup as above..
An advanced set will cost you some serious jack..esp a DW!
Might I suggest a Pearl Sessions(all Birch)in place of a high end kit..
Same setup as above..My church just purchased this set..along
with Omar Hakim snare..Lovin'it!

The Gretsch Catalina birch set is a lot of drum for the money. If you don't want birch I would try the DW Pacific Maple.
I would stay away from 'cheap' drum sets, even for beginners. It's no fun playing on something that sounds like garbage. Your resale value will be higher too.

Beginner/Intermediate- Pearl Export or Tama Swingstar.
Expert/Professional- Pearl SMX, Tama Starclassic, or Mapex Pro M.

In my humble opinion......dont by an entry level set. only if u have too! Middle of the road is perfect, cause you'll git better equipment. plus your drums can b easier to tune! which drums to purchase! well its a matter of ear opinion or your desire. dw's r the bomb! but a starclassic maple sounds great also. My friend is sponsered by pearl, his drums sound awesome. And he uses single ply remo's top and bottom on the toms. but he can tune the drums perfectly! the bottom line is what your pocket can bear. Man...I love zildjian cymbols, A's & K's wow.

I do still have this set for sale. Exactly the same as DW and other custom companies. $830. Pro level instrument, better price than you'll find on most entry level things.

Even if you're not interested, here's why you want to stear clear of entry level setups: they're made of MDF. Yeah, MDF. The same particle board you buy at home depot for $10 a sheet. As resonant and musical as a bed mattress. That's why it's so hard to really have a drum set worthy of being in a church. The prices are so freaking insane, even for the junk they'll sell to you as "entry level." It's unethical in my opinion.
