Okay, who's planning on stopping whatever they're doing to watch the MJ Memorial Service and pre- and post-service coverage?
I'm no groupie, but you gotta admit, this is pretty big for our culture and history. I'm almost kinda mad that Mrs. Katherine didn't accommodate us by having the memorial during prime time. LOL! Oh well... I'm counting down the hours until it airs.
-
I want to, but I don't know what channel or what time. Let me know.
-
Ok, I admit, I've made my calender conspicuously clear today for some reason.
-
I'm not planning to stop what I'm doing but I will probably catch the highlights. We have a tv in the office but I'm in the minority as far as those wanting to watch.
-
I want to, but I don't know what channel or what time. Let me know.
It's on at 1:00 p.m. EDT, but the pre-service coverage has been on all morning... LOL. From what I read, the family provided a free live feed to all the major networks, so you can probably catch it on any major station. I know for sure CNN is broadcasting it live.
-
YOU KNOW I WILL BE WATCHING!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm at work, so no. I know NBC is carrying it starting at 10:00 AM, but I think it's just the service and then back to regular programming.
-
CNN is showing it online, as well. I forgot to mention that.
-
eh.
-
is anybody going to watch the memorial.
it was just announced his body is going to be there. wow :-\

I was talking to my MOM yesterday, and I was telling her, its not that people dont know how to worship, they dont know who to worship. You hear t everywhere right now, "He was incredible. I will never forget him. I love him so much. He is awesome. He is amazing. " and so on. Some have become martyrs for their love for him. Some have flown thousands of miles, and waited outside overnight, camping to just to get close to his presence.
What would happen in our local churches if the subject of hundreds of thousands worshipping, was Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Im not saying anybody here is worshipping MJ, or any craziness like that. Im a musician, I love good music, and good production. And Im not going to be like the dude who said he was a low-life etc.
It was just something I was thinking about.
IRT the original question. Probably not, Im going for a jog, and Im going to the library after that.

Was the "No - With Soul" Guy busy? :-\
I think in honor of MJ's passing, someone should design a "No" guy with long hair and a fedora.

I agree...even though I mourn the loss of a great musical icon folks are exalting him as if he died for our sins. It is crazy. I listened to this interview this morning where this woman credited MJ for teaching us how to tolerate people of all walks of life and how to love all types of people. I was like "for real?"...so, exactly what did Jesus do? It is actually very sad.

Not gonna watch.
I confess to buying "Off the Wall" on album and "Thriller" on cassette and even learned the guitar parts to "Beat It" back-in-the-day, but I left the MJ worship camp many moons ago.

I'm sure that's not what you meant, but your comment vaguely implies that those who plan to watch are a part of the "MJ worship camp."
Perhaps some folks are just fans and not worshippers, or just want to watch the historic tribute to his life. :-\

Nah, it's the seemingly unending coverage of his death that I'm not going to be a part of, just like I wouldn't be of any pop idol. It's not how I'm wired.
Besides, if I want to hear Stevie Wonder song, I'll put on my Original Musiquarium discs...and that's not a bad idea ;)

Just know that if it doesn't make the mark, you will be scorned, mocked, ridiculed, and sent to the corner for at least three days. And that's just the wrath of RJ... there's no telling what the rest of us will do. :-\

Is that really you, LF? :o :D Where you been, sis?
Yes, it's me lol. I've been sick for months in and out of the hospital battling with bronchitis and pneumonia. Every year, usually around the same time, I get bronchitis, this time, it just really took over me. I'm much better now, thank goodness! :)
-
Alrighty Mariah. Amazing how things come out when you can't run a vocal track behind you.
-
Just tuned in. What's wrong with Mariah? The last few times I've heard her sing she's been awful.
-
Whaddya know? Sprint TV has it live on my phone...
-
I'm watching it. Martin Bushwajerk is making me mad!

That choir was nice, and the piano player was very tasteful.
Mariah......maybe she was just really, really grieved. :-\ :-[

They disappointed me with that song. I was so ready to be taken back to when I was a kid and they did that song. I was really for that high note too. Martin Bushir is an idiot. "I know why she needed that back up singer..." No you don't. Sit down and don't say anything the rest of the broadcast with your no research "reporter" self! >:(

Observations:
1. Yeah, what IS wrong with Mariah? That performance was lame. And who's the dude who sang with her? And did she say "thank you Jesus" at the end? (just curious if I heard that correctly).
2. Nessa... keep showing off about your Sprint BB and I will personally invent an app that allows me to remotely throw it out the window. >:(
3. Tiptip and her "No Man in honor of MJ" ROCKS!!!!!!!!!
4. I had forgotten about SJon throwing the book at Ms. Todd. That was so hilarious!!!! What was the context in which that was used, again? I can't remember, but I do remember laughing until I actually cried.
5. LF, you need to be the first to sign up for our "LGM Buddy System." :-\ (Seriously; I think I'm proposing a buddy system. How scary is it that such a regular LGMer and long-time family member was so sick and nobody knew it???) :-[

When he plays that piano, it truly shows the talent that God gives some of us even through adversity. This man cannot see and just listen to him play. It is beyond amazing.

Yeah she said it.
Martin Bushir again...he was saying how he heard that Michael joined the nation of Islam, but there's a Christian theme. Nobody but Michael and God know what Michael actually was. But when you invite Michael's Christian friends what the heck do you expect?

John Mayer is a bad boy. I had the pleasure of seeing him live just before he blew up. He deserves his success. He is one of the coldest guitarists out there. If I ever have the chance and budget to hire him for a session, it's as good as done. Yall need to check out the John Mayer Trio featuring him along with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. Them dudes be getting down.

Thanks Tip and La Rue, we might need to go ahead and set that up. :)
Why is it, Sheila Jackson Lee (a Houston Democratic Representative), has to be everywhere. You can rest assure if it's someone famous involved, we see her face, right out front at that lol.
Anyway, Jermaine had me crying during his tribute. I must say, that so far, the memorial has been good. Wow, Al Sharpton really spoke some true words. As the hood people would say, that's real talk lol.

Underwhelmed by the Brit dude.
Ya know, he really shows you how AMAZING it is that Mike was as good as he was at such a young age.

Underwhelmed by the Brit dude.
I agree. I'm just not blown away by him and never was when he first came on the scene. I wasn't going to say anything, but since you brought it up.

They definitely have a chance at the sympathy dollar, but unless they come with some banging new material, it will never be fully accepted without Michael. Sad but true. If MJ was still around, nobody would be checking for them at all.

LOL @ Mariah's prophetic grieving. It would be a trip to be watching this in the same room with all of you.
I was driving to the church on my lunch hour and teared up as Barry Gordy was talking, though I'm not really sure why. I was imagining God telling MJ he's giving him the most extroardinary talent in the world, and the ability to impact everyone alive, he gets to choose how he uses it and he only has 50 short years. When time's up, he stands before God like any one else to give an account for the awesome treasures God trusted him to use in this life. Like the three guys with the talents, he definitely was a "much is required" type of dude.
But all of us have a similar story, how much time do we have left? What will we have to show for what God has given us? That's some heavy thinking for a brief drive, lol.
BTW: I hit post and went to cover the front window for an hour, and I guess it didn't go through because there had already been nine replies. I hit post again and it came back that there had been 79 replies... Good Googly Woogly!!! :D :D :D

It was a very touching memorial service, especially after hearing his daughter speak (I believe I had a brief lump-in-throat moment there). After being mostly in shocked by Michael's death, a sense of sadness has taken root after seeing the casket at the end. I'm impressed that they closed the ceremony in Jesus' name though. I certainly hope those stories of Michael's conversion are true.

Yeah, he's probably up there entertaining the angels right now.
He's spinning and moonwalking and goes to grab his crotch and God's bellows "MICHAEL"... Then Michael in his soft voice says, "oops sorry, heee heeeee", lol.
-
One of the things I liked about the service was that everyone who spoke really humanized him. I'm not sure if that came out right, so I'll explain a little further:
I appreciate that, after he endured so many years of being ridiculed and mocked, they actually put a human being behind the name/face and conveyed that he's a real person who was really affected by everything he endured at the hands of vicious fans, accusers, story-tellers, capitalists, and the media.
Of course, I'm also pleased that they didn't try to deify him. They spoke of him as though he was just a phenomenally talented superstar who puts his pants on one leg at a time, not a mythical god of some sort. And, they justified their praise of him by highlighting his accomplishments and contributions to society.
He seems to have been a really good guy, in spite of it all.
-

Andre' Crouch said that he didn't during the time that they were with him. One of the things Martin B said was that Michael was said to have been Islamic yet the service has Christian overtones (or however he phrased it.) Whether anyone believes it or not Jesus is real. And most of the people who were on stage were Christians so what did you expect?!

The service was touching from beginning to end, and very well done. I think BET should take note that this is how you do a tribute properly within a short amount of time. I cried and I laughed, at times I felt like I was in church lol. Many of those who spoke about their time with MJ, made me felt as if I had known MJ right along with them.
I'm cracking up a bit at the reporter on MSNBC when it was being reported on several news outlets that the family and friends were headed to a hotel and were wondering what for. I guess when they found out, the reporter said they are headed there to eat and talk and celebrate more, it's an African-American tradition, ect. For some reason, I got a chuckle out of that.

What? Other cultures don't have the eatation after the funeral? (that's what we used to call it when we were kids, because we didn't know what the word for it was, and "reception" didn't seem quite right, lol.)

White folks have repasts, too. I don't see what the problem is. ?/? :-\

Seriously. David Shuster asked Tamron Hall what is the African-American tradition and wated to go into detail about it and Tamron did. Is as if, this is something new, but I thought many people of all faiths and ethnicities did that, have a gathering with food and such after a family member's death. IDK

Oops sorry for typos everyone. :)

Yeah, I thought it was the norm. I know the white folks do it a little different, like it maybe a little more solemn in some cases, but food is a common denominator, LOL! Though they tend to lean more toward finger-foods while we have an all out dinner complete with take-home plates :D :D :D

Hey buddy! Great to see you! We got some catching up to do! :)
The memorial service was all good. Usher performance was just great and Marlon and Paris speeches was a tear jerker.

MY OVERALL ANALYSIS:
1) "Soon and Very Soon".....PERFECT BEGINNING. I stood up and clapped like I was in church.
2) Mariah...they should take back every grammy and preserve what little voice she has left in a glass case and donate it to science. Ugh!
3) Queen Latifah....I have always admired her, but today I loved her. She presents well no matter what the climate...grand or gangsta...she can do it. That black dress was kinda nice fitting too....but I digress.
4) Marlon Jackson..........actually believes in the real Jesus.......whoa........I needed resucitation at that moment.
5) The little girl. Even if the speech was planned, rehearsed, etc., it was heart felt and I BALLED!
6) Janet.................WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mariah Carey.....in the words of NJ.."Lord Help"...

She was very poised and eloquent. AND BRAVE...I wouldn't have stood on national television and read a poem written by Maya Angelou. But she did...and nailed it in spite of the buildup of tears!!!!!
I was so proud of her....

She was great and STILL look good!

To be honest, Mariah's husband would have done a better job at saving the day. But...oh well. IT SUCKED TERRIBLY.
-
I watched it, it was everywhere how could you not watch it...
Anywho, the part that moved me the most was when Paris started talking about her father. Even old Chevonne started crying at that moment. I loved what Magic and Kobe said... Overall this was the best memorial I've ever seen. It was very organized and very good. Oh yeah and when other people song Michael's songs it just didn't sound right. I think someone tried to sing "Heal the world"....it just lets us know how unique his voice was. There will never be a better entertainer than Michael Jackson was.
Oh yeah and to Peter King....Let he who is without sin cast the first stone ;)

I was at work. I missed it. :(
What'd I miss?

CNN is showing it again tonight, but I'm unclear on the time. Someone told me 7, but since it's not on in Atl yet, I'm going to assume she had the time wrong.

Don't tempt me, cuz some days I feel like I'm not too far from making a big move... It'll be something stupid like a commercial that says, "Tonight at 8, 7 central..." to put me over the edge :D

I loved what Magic and Kobe said...
A bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. ROLMBO!!! :D
-
I've only been on the West Coast once, and that's one of the things that stood out to me as incredibly odd. I couldn't believe that, in San Diego, the commercials spoke of programs airing 'tonight at 8, 7 central.'
How weird... I don't think I could ever get used to that. Shucks, I'm having a hard enough time with the Alabama conversions, and we're included in the commercials. LOL

Word is they've broken up. But he could also just be laying back in the cut letting Janet have time with her family. You really haven't see anyone's spouses, S/O, or kids outside of MJ's during this whole time.
That was a good one Koda.

What? Other cultures don't have the eatation after the funeral? (that's what we used to call it when we were kids, because we didn't know what the word for it was, and "reception" didn't seem quite right, lol.)
eatation...ROFL :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
-
I remember when a bunch of us got together after burying our Asst. Band director from college. We went and had all-you-can-eat catfish.
"Mainstream" America just doesn't understand how we get down after a funeral. Can't you see Janet coming out of there with a Chinet plate wrapped in foil with a small saucer on top with some strawberry cake and a red Dixie cup?
-
Wasn't that Mr. Dupri in the brownish-colored suit on the front row by Janet nar the end of the service? Kinda bald? I think it was.
BFBT...that was not me. I was in the breakroom at work BALLING!!!! I broke own like I was having a Baptist fit.
I held up well until Marlon spoke and acknowledged JESUS. Then, to see Andrae and Sandra Crouch on stage.....too much!
Paris' tribute didn't move me because Marlon said "Janet" was going to speak...and then the Paris moment (which appeared somewhat scripted IMHO) happened. On the flip side, I think all kids squeeze their eyes that tight when they cry. And what child wouldn't LOVE having Mj as their dad....so I could be wrong.

"Don't focus on the scar; focus on the journey ... Michael out-sang his sentence; he out-danced his doubters; he out-performed the pessimists....it was strange what he had to deal with, but he dealt with it anyway....he dealt with it for us"
- Rev. Al Sharpton

I watched the memorial service twice. I didn't know that i would be so sad. I actually almost cried at certain points. The man burned bright when he was alive and brighter when he died. It was an amazing sight to behold. The same media that mocked and ridiculed him turned around to praise and honor him.
The times that really got tears comin down my eyes were:
1) Usher touching the casket.
2) John Mayer playing his song on guitar (can't remember the name).
3) Stevie Wonder's song
4) Marlon jackson's speech.
5) Kathy (?) his daughter's speech. This one really got me tore up!!!!
6) Lionel Richie singing.
I have to say thought that i suspect this will bring many people to Christ, especially the stars. I have never seen so many expressions of God's love and the love of Christ and such being said at a secular funeral. It was amazing to see God talked about so much.
Best quote:
"Wasn't nothin' strange about your daddy, what was strange was what he went through."- Rev Al Sharpton.
Awesome stuff!

Good God man! You cried six times?!?!
Do you mean Paris?
-
Good stuff, Fen.
My "highlights" (or most poignant moments) are:
1. Stevie Wonder's tribute
2. Queen Latifah's tribute
3. Usher's breakdown
4. DEFINITELY BROOKE SHIELDS - ugh... that was just heartbreaking. :'(
5. Jermaine Jackson's rendition of "Smile" - another heartbreaker and probably my #1 moment, were this list in order
6. Marlon Jackson's remarks - #2 moment
7. Paris Jackson's remarks
8. Al Sharpton... man, say what you want about dude, but he turned that funeral OUT!!! If dude never takes a mic again, he tore that one UP!
9. The pastor (Lucious Smith??) who did the benediction.
Moments I could've done without:
1. Mariah Carey
2. Mariah Carey
3. Mariah Carey
4. The London Tour Group singing "We Are the World"
5. J-Hud's "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" during "Will You Be There" (loved the song, love J-Hud, loved her performance... just could've done without the "yeah")
-
Moments I could've done without:
1. Mariah Carey
2. Mariah Carey
3. Mariah Carey
:D
Yea, that was absolutely terrible.
Riddle me this: How do you go from being a world-class singer to sounding like an American Idol reject?
-
2) John Mayer playing his song on guitar (can't remember the name).

John Mayer played Human Nature. I was speechless!
I agree on the quote.

I was soooo upset. Everytime they replayed her, I was like :-\ >:( . And dude that came out with her( IDK who he is) made it 10x's worse. UGH!

Didn't look scripted at all to me. The girl was just saying what she felt. I felt her pain. And if Janet was supposed to talk, then it couldn't have been scripted, as she wouldn't know she was going to say anything.

My first lady, who loves to give everybody the benefit of the doubt plus a little more, says that Mariah has battled some problem with her vocal chords. If that's the case, I feel bad that everybody is heckling her and she tried her best to do it for MJ.
-

She and Trey Lorenz did that song a while ago, I think it's on her Unplugged album, and it was actually quite good. I think they were going for that when they asked the two of them to perform it again.

That ain't it.
Here's her excuse (http://www.digitalspy.com/music/a164100/carey-apologises-for-jackson-performance.html)

She would've been better off just breaking down, mid-song and walking off saying "I'm sorry; I just can't do this...." :-\
She really sounded horrible.
But, with that said, I'm gonna come up off her now. I'm starting to feel a little bad for talking about her. On her worst day, she still sounds better than me, so...
On another note:
Another observation I made: how come nobody is playing the Usher clips? I watched CNN all night last night, as usual, and saw EVERYBODY's tributes at least 4-6 times each... Usher? I saw him for about 5 seconds on Larry King. What's up with that? His was one of the best, and certainly one of the most touching. :-\
Oh, and I definitely DON'T THINK Paris's tribute was scripted. Not at all. That thought didn't even cross my mind.

Listening to him right now. :D

Oh, can we talk about Yolanda Adams for a minute???
I pretty much NEVER listen to her show, but this morning when I got in the car, it was on that station, and they were talking about MJ, so I left it on. Why did she actually allow herself to say, (paraphrased): "well, the family wanted me to sing 'This Too Shall Pass' but Kenny Ortega said that would make the show go to 3 hours, and he was really trying to keep it at 2, so that's the only reason I didn't sing at the funeral. But the family really wanted me to sing that song."
I was like... ugh. That sounded so LAME, Yolanda!!! She just kinda reduced herself from an A-lister to a wannabe artist. :-\

Barbara Walters was doing a special when I got home on ABC last night, and they played the usher joint from when he started walking to come down on the floor 'til the end, and then they played clips of it a couple more times. Some of those highlights had me cryin' all over again. During Barbara's interview with Stevie, she asked him to sing, "I Just Called to Say..." idk the real title, but Lawd I was bawlin! It was broken up by her joining in for the chorus, but who could blame her? I woulda did the same thing, LOL!

They wanted to keep it at 2 hours and her singing would make it 3? 3? really? AND I'm pretty sure that if they REALLY wanted her to sing that song...she could have...
Yolanda... :-\

What especially rubbed me the wrong way is the stark difference between her comments and John Mayer's (last night on Larry King Live). John was just so undeniably humble and meek. He repeatedly said that he just couldn't figure out why they chose him to perform. When asked what went through his mind when he got the invitation, he said that he went through about a 48-hour period of just asking "why me?" He repeatedly talked about how he didn't even know MJ (wasn't trying to front like they were so cool), but they were connected only through music.
His sentiment was just the complete opposite of Yolanda's talking about "well you know, I was *ahem* SUPPOSED to sing, but *ahem* instead they're going to put me on the *ahem* MJ Tribute Concert, which will also be aired on every station in the country... *ahem* probably in the world!!!" ::) ::)
-
I don't think she wanted to do it in the first place...An opportunity like that, I would surly would've took it.
-
Yolanda and her show gets on my nerves. (especially when they eat in the mic! Ugh!)

Yeah, that's really weak. I hope somebody pulled her to the side and told her how weak that was.
-

I don't think the "opportunity" ever materialized.
At best, someone probably mentioned that song in a brainstorming session. Or maybe Kenny mentioned to her that they would've liked for her to sing, but time simply wouldn't permit it.
I highly doubt anyone actually asked her TO sing...
(Oh and for the sake of total disclosure, she also mentioned that they wanted Shirley Caesar to sing as well, but Yolanda couldn't remember the name of SC's song). :-\ ::)

The guy on the guitar...I didn't know what his name was but he was awsome. He played that lil' raggedy guitar.. :D.
As far as Mariah goes...How often does she not do well...as far as singing goes???
I believe it was a combination of not much practice (if any) and emotion. Yall know she can sang.
I've heard her do that song...I think it was some "unplugged" concert. She was off the cha-zain!LOL

The last few times I heard her she was awful. When I heard she would be performing I knew I had to watch to see if it was a fluke or if she was on the decline.
There she was in all her glory....moving her hand up and down like she was doin sumthin while hittin all those sour notes. *smh*

John Mayer. He is indeed awesome. One of my *Ahem* Caucasian *Ahem* friends put me on to him a while ago. Listen to his latest album, it's nice. My favorite is "Waiting On the World to Change".
That's if you can stand a little "Seculah" music. :D

Yeah, he said on Larry King that's the reason he only played and didn't sing because he didn't feel he could do Michael justice.

You must be talking about the pre-breakdown Mariah. She hasn't done well, vocally, since her breakdown, IMO.

I missed it! :-\ *shrugs*

Dag, I sure, was hoping that the Jackson 5 would've performed....

Nope. Not kidding.
Hmmmm, now that's strangely ironic.

First of all, I just spit a little bit of coffee out laughing at that.
Secondly, I think dude was talking about the OTHER Jackson 5... the one with Randy, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, and Jackie. :-\
Not buying it?
Ok, well he meant the Jackson 4. :-[ :'(

Ok, I'll admit I haven't heard her live on anything in a while... but she's always been one of my favs. I'd hate to think she's losing some of her vocal abilities.

That's because at one point, each of the 6 had been a part of the J5. Jermaine was eventually replaced by Randy. And I think Jackie was the first to leave to do a solo album (if I'm not mistaken).
Think of it as a photo of New Edition that shows Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ronnie Devoe, Ricky Bell, Mike Bivens, and Johnny Gill. Oh nevermind, that's before your time, innit? LOL

When you were 6yrs old?
Youuuuuuu got it! ;D

I did catch some of the MJ memorial re-run on VH1 last night, and I must say that thang was sumthin serious. They almost had me crying a few times:
Brooke Shield's comments
Usher's singing and crying at the end of it
Al's speech
The Benediction ("...the King of Pop must now bow his knee to the King of Kings!")
Those are the moments that stood out the most to me. I didn't see the whole thing cuz I was kinda sleepy and dozing in and out. But, when I was conscious, I saw some great stuff. One of the best memorial service's I've ever seen.
-

I'm surprised that with all of the "where are they now" coverage they gave to people in his life that they never acknowledged that Wylie Draper who played the adult Michael Jackson in the movie The Jacksons: An American Dream died about a year after that movie came out from leukemia at the age of 24. As much as they have been showing that movie over the last two weeks, it's amazing the media wasn't looking into those involved in that movie for a reaction.

For me, the stand out performance at the Michael Jackson memorial service was Stevie Wonders emotional tribute, it was respectful & touching.
Be blessed

Didn't get to see MJ's Memorial live, but recorded and watched it a couple of times...IMO very classy and put-together for a such a last-minute production. I saw a brief shot of dad Joe Jackson in the front row, saying NOTHING. Did someone muzzle him?
Her diva-tude makes me laugh sometimes
"divatude" and "eatation"? Wow, two new words in one day...
