Question: To the musicians, singers , athletes, entertainers on here, How much of a percentage of what you do is for the love of the craft and how much of it is for the wow factor/ praise that you will get once you reach a certain level of greatness? Is it wrong to want the praises of the masses when you're in the showbiz field? How much does that drive u?
I ask this question after having a nice discussion with a friend...I told her that one of the reasons I got into playing music was for the adulation and praises of others once I reached a certain level of expertise. Not that this was the sole driving force behind the many hours of practice over the years, but it does play a substantial percentage into the whole scheme of why I got into the music field. I know the love of the craft is always number 1, but is it wrong to look for the praises of others when you know you're doing something great? ?/?

Praise can be a drug...so good, so addictive...best to pass what you get on to the Lord.

I agree..if you get too much of anything , it can become a drug to you. I think it's only natural for us , who were created in God's image to cherish approval and even praise. From the time most of us were born, whenever we'd do something good we'd get praised by our parents for accomplishing said goal..whether it be walking, talking, riding a bike etc..
I just think it's good to have balance when it comes to why you're doing what you love to do ...
I don't play solely Gospel music so sometimes the music isn't as spiritual to me and I can't pass the praises to God because it's not music that he'd approve of necessarily....so when I'm doing secular gigs, one of my sole reasons for doing what I'm doing, besides the money and love of playing , is for the crowd and the way they react to what it is that I'm doing.

I'm praying for ya choir. We need an LGM prayer vigil asap!
On topic: I always stop myself short & pray when I feel the ego spirit come on. I admit, I don't always win. Praise only belongs to God - noone else.
What I do think is valid in this discussion is at least having confidence in your abilities/talents and be unashamed to deliver with no excuses or unmoved by the praise & adulation etc.
What I've found is that kind of mentality & attitude is usually found in real musicians... who are few & far between.
-
Naw, I don't have a big ego. I'm too good, too important, and too fly to have a big ego. I'm just waiting on my own reserved parking space and a full-time drum tech at church then I'll be straight.
-
My ego is humongous and I need help.

...and Cherri's ego is ten times the size of mine. She and I attended a Chris Coleman clinic, and she signed a picture of herself and gave it to HIM.

It is when one keeps the praise to themselves and does NOT deflect it back to God. After all, He's the one who gave you your ability.
-
Satan got kicked out of Heaven for wanting to be on shine street all the time. You need to be careful with that and remember where your gift came from and to whom it belongs. Further, your love of the craft is never "number 1," your love for Him is.

Mind if I borrow that?

You mean the kind that says "Drummer's Parking Only, Don't even THINK about leaving your car here!!!"
:D :D :D
But more seriously - maybe I'm less afraid of not getting praise/recognition than I am of being unappreciated/taken for granted...as in, "oh, yes, betnich will do that" without even taking the trouble to ASK me first...
:(
-
Its very simple. If you practice your butt off to achieve a certain level of musicianship, you deserve praise. I dont know if you should be looking for it but, if it comes, be very happy and humble to receive it.
On the flip side, if God has blessed you with a talent that cannot be improved through physical practice or hard work, then you should forward all praise to God. An example of this would be delivering a prophetic word.
This might sound a little weird but you have to be careful even when you give God praise. To the wrong person, it can make you look arrogant, as if you dont do any physical work or practice to achieve execellence, implying that youre just, "blessed to be that good." But of course, to us, its just an attempt to stay humble, right? ?/?

On the real, I don't need recognition so to speak because I don't play for that reason(at least not anymore). I have a job to do, so I do it, get my money, thank God for the opportunity and bounce. I'm the kind of cat that will disappear during breaks and after the gig is over while everybody else is shaking hands and hob-nobbing with the chicks(yes, even at church).
Plus, if you still gotta tote your own gear around, you aint got room for an ego.
-
Is praise worship?
And if so, who gets that?

Ay fretai03, you guys okay with the tsunami watch/warning?

Good stuff. I agree , sometimes people do use the 'It's God' thing to brush people off or show fake humility/modesty...I know this is very common practice in the church world when you compliment someone on their craft..they automatically brush it off as if what they're doing is nothing and anyone can do it without much practice.
I guess praise may be a bad choice of a word to use but it seems like in every profession where you're entertaining a crowd of people , they then have an awards celebration to compliment you on how well you do your particular gift/talent.
Playing 'gospel' music and being in church is a total different monster in itself...I know many a people have a problem with them even having Gospel awards show to pay homage to people who have done great ...
To me, it's only human to seek recognition and words of affirmation and praise from your peers ..not to the point where it's what drives you, solely ..but it does play a role in the whole scheme of things. IMHO
-
Not to sound arrogant, but if I never get another compliment on my playing I'll be straight. Yet, I feel that I do have an issue with recieving praise for my playing. I usually take on the "aw shucks," demeanor. Not even 1 minute after I go through all that I think, "DANG! I should have redirected that to God." From there I'll pray and for forgiveness and give the praise to the Lord.
Now that I think about it when it comes to redirecting the praise to God I don't really know what I would say. :-\ I don't want to sound cocky, and I don't want to sound like I'm just saying it to say it. Hmmm....

Lol " rock and a hard place" ..I guess a simple thanx will more than suffice.

That's what always gets me though. I say, "thanks," but I feel like I should be saying something else along with that to acknowledge God. Maybe it's just pressure I'm putting on myself.

Yeah I think a simple "thank you" is enough. There is absolutely nothing godly about being good on an instrument. In fact, if you look at the background of the most influential musicians of our time, you will find that there is nothing spiritual about them yet most spiritual musicians look up to them, skill wise.
Urban gospel musicianship is more of a culture to me. Something you have to be born in to obtain the true authentic feel. Whoa that last sentence sounded very COGIC lololol! My roots are surfacing lol. For your unique sound and approach, its ok to give credit to the culture you grew up in. For your skill level, its ok to give credit to the hard work and study you have put in. But unless you can say, "I was'nt trying to be a musician" or "I actually hated music as a kid" or "God just woke me up one day and offered me this great talent, and I accepted it," then I dont think its a proper response to give God glory in place of a simple "thank you."
-
I mean I see it as this...in a church/gospel/worship session, whatever you want to call it there is a place where skill, and talent is enough. Although from the outside it may seem that way, thats only half the battle. In ministry we all know there is only one purpose, and one purpose only..either way you look at it, and in order to be effective you must have the other half, which is the anointing. Some people may be talented, and skillful, but have no anointing. On Tye's Victory album he was talking about skill v.s. anointing. You have to understand that it is the true power of God that destroys the strongholds in peoples lives. It is his divine power that breaks yolks, set people free, and bring his children to life. You cant do it by yourself point blank...you need God's anointing. Thats why building, and establishing a stable relationship is so important. So I say when out shedding, or general playing, then hey...do what you do....but when serving God, all glory and honor is truly due to him, for without him, these things wouldnt be possible.......

Potna, you know someone is going to take issue with what you just said! But, you seem more than capable of defending your point of view.

And IMO Tye and GA's 'Victory Live' recording was better than their previous studio effort largely because of God's presence in that live church service...

*walks in singing Beyonce's Big Ego*
Honestly, I think I fell into this category as a teenager. I thought I was better than everyone..lol. Then one day I had someone put me in my place. From that point on, I have never had an ego issue.
P.S. On the football field, it's a different story!!!
-
Now imma be honest, sometimes I do look for ppl to tell me I did a good job. It makes me feel good to know that my practice is payin' off, mainly from musicians because even when you know u sucked the people in the congregation will tell you that you did a good job. I don't do it in a sense to where I want to hear it to be like yeah I beasted tonight and all eyes on me. I hate when musicians are arrogant or cocky. But I do need to remember to forward that praise back to God because He's the one that gave me the gift in the first place. Everybody in the world don't have the gift of music because either they simply can't catch on or God doesnt want certain ppl to play because that's not one of their callings. So we need to thank God and forward the praise when we get it.
-
To me, just a simple "thank you" will suffice. After all you did put in work enough to reach that level of recognition.
-
I my Option i think its a difference in being praise and having a big ego problem its not a problem of being praise from time to time it make us feel good its saying that its somebody out there that enjoys ur playing thats the human part of us,Ego man i no alot of musician(drummers, keyboard, bass player, etc)that have ego problems like if ur not on there level u not even worthy of talking 2 them, like if i don't have chops out this world u can't say whats up 2 me,in todays world of musician its like we battle each other so much 2 be top dog its crazy u have 2 do something off the wall now just 2 be reconized as a decent drummer. its alot of people that love my playing and its some thats says he alright
-
Well if you guys don't mind me pouring for a second hopefully I can help shine a little light on this subject.
No matter what style of music or enviroment you play in from church to stadiums "Ego's" are never neccessary but if your going to have one just know these rule's..........
"Ego's"
1. Are earned not given!!!!!!!
2. It takes you being more than just good.
3. If your resume doesn't match your "Ego" then you have no reason to have one.
4. The people determine how good you are so its dangerous to give that kind of power to people that does not really know you, because they could easily confuse you confidence with arrogance.
5. "Praise & Blame is all the same"
6. Most people have "Ego's" because they've either been embarrassed in public and the insecurities have caused them to develope an ego to protect them from repeating that moment.
7. You can be successful with one. But no one will really like you. They'll just "Tolerate " you because they just want your gift or talent and that won't last long.
8. The guy with the "Ego" doesn't really realize he's living a bubble with his own cheering section in his head and his or her crew going everywhere with him or her to scream the loudest when him or her plays or sings!
9. Nothing wrong with saying "Thank You" and its nothing wrong with giving GOD the glory and honor for the gift or talent he's given you. NOTHING AT ALL!!!!!!!! Don't feel weird about that, and it doesn't make you super spiritual doing that. God gave the gift or talent BUT!!!! its your job to polish it and make people love it! NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING GOOD AND CONFIDENT AT WHAT YOU DO!!!!!!!! Just don't take it to the head homie!
10. Stop it with the "Ego's" nobodies really checking for you like that. Do what you do, always be nice to people, take the time to talk to people who think your great, remember the GOD made you famous not your playing, play and sit down, stop all that walking around after you play or sing "We know you exist!"
And last and certainly not the least.
THE GOLDEN RULE!!!!!!!
THEIRS ALWAYS SOMEBODY BETTER THAN YOU!!!!!!!!! And it's always the guy you never thought would be. STAY HUMBLE FELLAS ITS THE ONLY WAY UP! Can't have an "Ego" if all your doing is playing at musicals, and jazz clubs. You haven't touch 1% of the world with what your doing! Take pride in those moments by making the people whom your working for or playing or singing for the greatest, funest most musical moments. Do your job and do it well. Because the greatest compliment is when you keep getting invited back!!!!!!! Use those moments in the lazz spots and musicals to become shaper, smarter, better and more sociable to others. And I promise you you'll go far. The world is waiting for you but, you must be ready mentally not just musically! Playing music is 90% mental and 10% physical.
Love you guys!

Wow!!! Now thats what you call looking out :)
LOL!!! Though it is off subject, I must make this observation...
Why is it that everytime a big named musician comes in here and makes a statement, then its deemed to be the truth lol! Now before anyone can get it twisted, I agree 100% with what Jeremy said but, if you all can get out of the hype for 10 minutes, you will realize that what he said has nothing to do with him being a "seasoned vet." Its basic life 101. Live a little, open your eyes and ears to whats going on and you too can gain the same knowledge. I have seen this pathetic behavior several times in different threads and its sickening. Then you finally get a chance to meet your favorite musicians in person and they seem like jerks. Why is that? Maybe if you stop sweating them for a minute, it wouldnt be that way. Get out of the hype and let a man be human for 10 minutes. Have a normal conversation sometimes. It wont hurt.
Then on the same token, you get big named musicians who come on this forum and lie about how much money they make. I recall one of them claiming that they get offered $5000.00 a night to play an R&B gig. What happened after that, cats started trippin out in this fantasy world like, man, dude is gettin all this money lol! Well let me tell you like this, nobody on this planet is being offered that much money to play for any artist. Do the math. Put yourself in the artist's shoes. If you were big enough to offer that kind of money to a musician, you would'nt have to lol! Talented musicians with lesser names will play for much much less. Artists dont care about names anyway. You can barely see musicians at a show and no one in the croud cares. But because a big named musician made this false claim, its deemed to be the truth and you supposedly dont have to think for yourself? Thats non-sense.
This is supposed to be Learn Gospel Music but it seems as though people are learning little to nothing, and producing even less. :-\
I think everyone should stop and ask themselves, what does this forum mean to you?
I have been here a couple years and I cant believe the lack of growth. What happened to this place? Im seeing videos on here that should be praised that arn't. Then Im seeing videos on here where people are clearly better talkers than they are players, and everyone is like, yeah man good job lol. What is that? How does that help anyone get better?
I think I'm wasting valuable words here but, if I can help one other person, my job is done.
Peace, Love and Blessings

Hmm. interesting.
I think people do learn a lot on here. I can't back up my words with fact on paper because in order to do that one would need to have assessed every person before they joined the forum and now.
I do agree with your point about musicians taking what some "Seasoned Vets" say for complete truth. I have been a product of it in the past.
Why people do that? I don't know. It could have something to do with wanting to learn as much as you can and not being entirely sure on all the answers yourself so when someone who is a "vet" comes in and states their opinion on it you tend to just think that because they have been out there and are successful to some kind of degree that it must be right.
People have to eventually learn to break from dependency on others to make decisions for them. As your growing up you depend on your parents to make decisions for you or teachers or who ever else. as you mature you start making your own decisions. In a sense it's the same thing with music where someone has to eventually learn to think for themselves and not be scared to have a free mind.
It can even go as far as Pastors/Preachers but i wont go into that that's a whole different subject.
To the topic at hand which is Ego's.
Personally I think there is a difference between someone with an Ego and someone with Confidence.
In my opinion someone with an Ego is someone who feels as though what they do is greater than what anyone else can do. They also tend to try to put others down to make themselves seem/feel superior.
However, confidence is something that i feel is when a person just knows that they are pretty solid at what they do and are no push over and knows their value. This person also recognizes that they are NOT the best and that there are others who are better than them.
In my opinion there is a difference between the two and we should be careful not to mix it up.
It's like a woman.
There are women in this world who have their heads up their own butts and think they are the greatest thing to walk the earth and we should be grateful to even be allowed in their presence. These women also tend to put down other females and also males who they feel are not "on their level".
However, there is also the woman who just knows that she looks good, she knows she has her stuff together. She does not take the time to put down other women or men because she knows her value as a woman and will not be bothered with someone that does not know their value.
Just my opinion.

Good stuff D.O.D & Drumz. To me, it doesn't matter if you're a seasoned vet or a person with very lil' experience...I dig what everyone has to offer when it comes to a topic such as this..to see what drives you , motivates you , keeps you humble..it's a melting pot of knowledge in here and I'm soaking it all up .
I can only speak for myself but I am always working hard, practicing and learning and appreciate all the expertise people have offered up in this forum . I'm an organst/keyboardist primarily and bass is my 2nd instrument , but the drum forum has always been one where I felt the people kept it real . Keep sharing the tips, videos , practice and everything else that will force us to grow! I know I've grown by leaps and bounds from the drum advice I've picked up in this very Forum!

Well, Well...since you used my quote as a reference I feel obligated to reply. From my opinion we should always look up to the ones who are seasoned at what they do...number its not by accident they are where they are, and from alot of their experiences they can shed a lot of light and wisdom on some of us. No...I dont think the best advice always comes from seasoned vets, but.....I do greatly appreciate them taking the time to stop in and at least drop some lines. You have alot out there that don't even say a word until there name is mentioned...no offense, but Im not a big Jeremy Haynes fan anyways, just not my flavor.....not robbing him of anything because he is awesome, and his resume backs it up. If you claim you believe a 100% of what Jeremy said, whats wrong with my believing it??? Its not sweating a professional, its called appreciating them. I appreciate everybody who contributes something constructive not just seasoned professionals. Also yes this is LearnGospelMusic and I have learned alot, who are you to say one hasn't??? Just because we havent dropped a project like you??? Just because we dont have a huge discography??? What are you basing success on??? IMO....success is based on ones ability to achieve the goals which THEY have set. You don't know ones goals and their achievements in life, so you can't say whether they are learning or progressing or what, just because YOU dont see it. You know I dont bite my tongue so im going to say straight up....you need to take YOUR head out the clouds, and come back down to earth. You are talking straight from your opinion. If you base learning something, and producing little on Cds, Dvds, Endors., and stuff you are twisted. There are people on here I know are doing much, and being very effective. Just because you don't see it on here, or in Wisconsin dosent mean its not happening. It's cool homie, but you cant make global statements when you truly dont know. I know you feeling all good with your marketing stuff, and your CD and stuff, but everyone isnt trying to go down the same path as you. Some people have different visions, goals, and achievemnets so I just think you need to respect that. I will tell you straight up.....im going to school right now getting my Bach. in Information Technology, my goal is to become a senior analyst, thats my career, as far as drumming my goal is to be a full time drummer for a successful ministry. I dont plan on touring, I dont care about being in the studio, or heavy gigging. Im happy with Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursday night services. So tell me.....how can you judge my success????

As a matter of fact....mods delete my reply because this isn't even worth getting into. Peace :)

Now this is exactly what I'm talking about. Here you are bringing up my accomplishments when they have nothing to do with the subject matter. This isn't about playing drums, giging, endorsements or dropping cd's. I'm talking about growing as a human being, thinking for yourself and keeping it real. I hope you get it one day fam.
Peace and Blessings.

I think people with egos aren't happy at all. At times they can look miserable, and lonely.
-
I think people with egos aren't happy at all. At times they can look miserable, and lonely.
Very, very true, Sir. Extremely wise assessment.
-
Do you have a big ego??
...I don't. I try to keep my ego in check. lol
How much does that drive u?
...honestly man, since I started, I've always loved music and playing with other people. Seriously. I love the craft and all but there's nothing like playing with other musicians. I figuered that out by like the age of 10. That's why I hated practicing alone. lol
...in what I do, (not showbiz) I'm wrong if I go out and look for the praises of the masses. That messes with my mind and kind of disrupts me musically. I've tried it. lol So for me, what drives me the most is getting the band and myself to sound great and to project with clarity the message that we're trying to get across. I guess for me is to sound as musical as possible. If people dig it, cool. If they give me praise, I say thank you and ask them how they felt and what they liked about the music or what I played etc. I always give the glory to the most high but recently I like to get in depth with people to see what they think or feel.
...to sum things up, I think what should drive you is the love for what ever it is you do. :)
...hope I stayed some what on topic. :-\

OH!! and btw "Dude-On-Drums" (and I'm so serious about what I saying right now) did I do something to you in a past life that I'm not aware of???? Did I offend in another subject or something???? I'm really curious to know because, you kinda diminished my knowledge or my advice as if it was with no substance or value. That whole "Think for yourself" comment had nothing to do with the thread homie. Maybe when you become someone that people respect, value and look up to you'll understand the importance of giving and sharing your life's experiences with people who are inspiring to be where you are. When I started my song writing and publishing company "Rhythm Is Life Music" I didn't seek the advice of someone that was making an attempt to do what I was trying to do, I asked my Long time friend of 18yrs Kevin Bond how to, and what to, because "HIS COMPANY IS DOING VEEEEEEERY WELL!" and I wanted mine to do the same. Unfortunately we don't live in a world where people trust those who haven't experienced what we're striving to experience so we have mentors and as you guys say "Seasoned Vets" that may say things that we value to our aspiring careers or goals as a musician. Please don't confuse this with me being offended or upset because that's never ben my thing. We all own the right to like whomever we like or love. But no one and I mean NO ONE!! Unless you are a legitimate critic with a professional job to critique what people do in and with they're careers or OR! Your a hater and you find pleasure in "Down Playing" anyone's accomplishments or what they say. Trust me fam the knowledge that God has allowed myself to receive from experience in my career and the knowledge I've gained from my musical heroes experiences have spring borded my life into a whole notha level that's only humility and maturity got me 2. So please be careful being careless when it comes to what you say about the people who are living the life your going after.
Peace Fam. Much Love and Respect!

Actually you read my post all wrong. I was actually complimenting you on your knowledge. I was trying to explain the fact that a person doesn't have to be a "seasoned vet" or "professional musician" to learn and share those principals. And the "think for yourself" comment is a principal that I was taught and live by. Its great to get guidance and advice from those you look up to but, its also an even better thing to live life for yourself, research and have personal experiences. Its kind of like listening to your pastor preach, but also reading and experiencing the Word for yourself.
I appreciate the love and respect. Likewise!

Hey, jhaynes, did you read the entire initial post? Here is what dude-on-drums said:
Now before anyone can get it twisted, I agree 100% with what Jeremy said
Now here is what Da_Drumma said:

I also agree that you read dude-on-drums' post incorrectly. ?/?

Gotcha Big Dawg. Just want you in this next season of your life to just be careful how you use your words and energy. No reason you guys should be going at it on this forum. Just want you guys to keep the peace on LGM nothing wrong with disagreeing, that's what makes us individually special.
Bless You Man.

Didn't misread it my man. I understood everything he said. But my comment wasn't about me misunderstanding. My comment was geared towards dude-on-drums saying, think for yourself. The thread wasn't about someone thinking for themselves. I was trying to bring a clear cut understanding to the mindset of just because people agree doesn't mean they're not thinking for themselves. And the other comment came from the other guy who he was arguing with. Sooooooooo............??????? I hope you guys understand where I'm coming from.

I didnt say that in anyway as I dont like Jeremy....I was just simply using it to say that I still look up to him even though he may not be #1 on my list. It has nothing to do with his playing ability or personal life. I said that to say....im not just jumping on his side because he's Jeremy Haynes the seasoned drummer, I agreed because I felt in my heart it was true. Even if it would of came from a newbie on the forum, I still would have agreed. I have nothing against Jeremy and I still by the albums he is on, my style is just different from his and I just have a drummer with more of my style as my fav. That wasnt anything negative at all, so dont portray it to be. Like he said Kevin Bond is his mentor, and Kevin Bond is well respected. Thats why I can TRUST the wisdom and knowledge that comes from jeremy. I have nothing personal w/ D.O.D we are just disagreeing on this one.
-
You're correct, Da_Drumma... You understood my rationale for using those two quotes! The point of me putting both comments on my reply were to show jhaynes that props are given, and that no one has anything against him. That's why I quoted your entire statement, and not just only this portion:
...no offense, but Im not a big Jeremy Haynes fan anyways, just not my flavor.....
Now had that only been quoted, then yeah...

Riiiiiiight!!! My point exactly! Theirs nothing in his qoute that said "He couldn't think for himself" that was my whole point of trying to bring peace and clarity to this thread. So my man buzz95 when you jump on the wagon of someone elses comment please be accurate sir.
I must say though, I believe this is a sign of growth on here for you guys because your speaking from a psssionate place and that always a good sign!!!! Stay passionate and excited about who you are and what you want to become. Just remember this, "Its not what you say its HOW you say it"
In the words of our beatin brotha, Rodney King

Love you guys. (Gotta get back to work)

I keep my ego in check the same way in every aspect including music, business, and life. How? Simple. I hang around people who have more.
I hang around musicians who would slay me in their sleep... and they make me better. I hang around people who have been married twice as long as I have... and they make me better. I hang around very, very, very successful businessmen... and they make me better. There is never a time for my ego to rise up because I'm always too busy learning.
I hope that helped somebody...
God bless ;)

That's good bro.
What Gerald is talking about is actually a command from God, discipleship. Be discipled and make disciples. Who are you meeting with regularly and working through deep issues we all struggle with like ego/pride? I meet with 2 men from church every week and we work through personal struggles, confess sin, all things God commands us to do. I couldn't tell you how monumental it is to my walk with Christ to see older men model for me what it looks like to stand firm in the faith, act like a man, love and lead my women, and point me to the only hope I have to make it in any of this, the cross of Christ. Your behavior is a result of what's in your heart so how are you working on your heart?
We have to start seeing things differently. For instance, let's talk about habitual tardiness. We cannot blame it on culture or lack of discipline. Our behavior comes from our heart. The truth is we are lovers of self and sleep. If you're dealing with ego/pride, which we all are, you must first realize it's a matter of the heart. You are self-worshiping and may have elevated creation (music) over creator (God), which is our hearts natural pull. How are you actively working on this? No one stumbles onto humility.
Sadly we can't even address this issue with out digging deeper.
