Title: Flashback Friday!
Post by: LaylaMonroe on July 28, 2009, 01:25:12 PM
Yeah, I know today is Tuesday, but Flashback Tuesday didn't sound right... lol.

This morning in the car, I heard "He's a Keeper" (Rodney Bryant) and it took me back to acid-wash jean skirts and white skippies!  :D :D

The other day, an acquaintance of mine was blasting "He's Worthy" (Jonathan Greer).  OMG, I almost brokeded my hip dancing on that one! LOL!

Oh yeah, and the other day, MM04 and I were singing "I'm Glad to Be Alive" by Hez 'Nem. LOL

What other good flashbacks can I put on the record player to get me through the rest of this longgggg day?

And let me give a word of warning now to Bishop2, LF, and Loopy... this ain't no throwback thread, so don't be mentioning no songs from the doggone 60s that don't nobody know except y'all... LOL!

Yesterday, I heard Hakunna Matata. Took me back to the days of play-doh and chocolate milk.

Those were the days.  :-\ ;D

OK, lemme make a clarifima-cation! I don't do 60's gospel! That is ALL Bishop2! I'm good for gospel that came out DURING MY LIFETIME (particularly 80's and 90's gospel)!  :D

You know I could probably name 100+ flashback songs, but I've been on an old school Thomas Whitfield kick lately. I was jammin' to "Lift Those Hands and Bless Him" with Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and "The Grass Withereth" with Karen Clark-Sheard the other day. Thomas was a GENIUS!

Some other good "flashbacks" is "Over And Over", "Great Things" and "There Is No Failure" by Rev. Milton Brunson and the Tommies. Heck, take your pick of any of Tommies song from the 80s!

And don't forget the late, great O'LANDA DRAPER!! Pick any of his songs, but particularly those choir "jams" like "Hallelujah, He Abides", "Gotta Feelin'", and "Jeremiah's Groove"!

GOTTA LOVE FLASHBACKS! That's when gospel was "real"!  ;D

Dude. Do you know I have LITERALLY never taken that CD out of rotation since I first bought it back in '94?  I literally continue to play it on the regular...

That CD is the business!!!!

Ok, how about you named all the O'Landa songs I *DON'T* like... lol.  I love O'Landa, but not those...  :-\

And I gotta agree with you on the Milton Brunson tip... he is one of the few artists whose CDs may have ONE track that I'll skip (if one, at all).

It's timeless.  If it was released today it would still make money.

I LOVE the arrangement of "Jesus Saves" on that CD. It's oh-so Detroit/Winans!

Anybody else on here remember Lawrence Matthews ("Savior Do Not Pass Me By")? Also, anything on John P. Kee's VERY FIRST album "Yes Lord."

Lawrence lives out this way, he was supposed to sing at our GospelFest, but I guess he flaked.

I remember Lawrence and that song (we sang at least 3 variations of it over the years).

I LOVVVE "I'm lookin for a miracle..." and most any old TCS stuff.

And Loop, "Jesus Saves" is my LEAST FAVORITE SONG ON THAT CD!!! I may have played it 3 times, compared to the 3000 times I've played the rest of the CD. I hate the "dum, dum dummmm" ::). The only part I half-way like is when he says "now if you're a liar, or a cheater, don't leave; Jesus saves!" LOL!!!! That always made me chuckle. :-\

That Lawrence Matthews CD was THE BOMB!

I needa blessing don't pass me by!

I LOVE every song on that CD...but the one I listen to the most is Let Jesus Fix It for You. I still have that cd.
Did you hear that he and Daryl Coley are cousins? I bet they will tear a family reunion up!!

Ok this song was ringing in my soul so loudly this morning, I had to share. Last year some time, I visited Mysteryman and NJ's church. One of the (many) songs the choir sang was Cosmo's "Step Back, Let God Do It." Its been stuck in my spirit ever since. WoooooooooHOOOOO!!!!

Now THERE'S a flashback for your Fri-- uhh, I mean Wednesday. :D

Hey... I'm with Loopy, I don't know of that many gospel songs from the 60's, that would be Bishop2 all the way! :) I do like He's A Keepa, still sounds as fresh as the day it came out, along with a constant message.

I do too, that's one of my top 10 hymn arrangement songs I like. To this day, "Savior, Do Not Pass Me By" is my song. Any song that Lawrence Matthews ministers is always pretty solid. Just a small correction though Loop, **ducking while I'm typing this lol** Yes Lord wasn't John P. Kee's first recording (solo, yes), but Brethren In Unity was the first.

Yes, that's definitely a good flashback for today. Heck, I need to let the lyrics be my motto for today. :)

24/7 was such a hot CD!!!  My favorite off that one was "Be a Fence."  I really just love the part when LaShun (I think it was LaShun?) said "ho ho hooooooo Jesus, beeeee a fence" at the start of the second chorus.

Of course I loved "When God is in the Building," "U-Know," and "All in Christ."  :'(

Man, Loopy!  That was my jam.  That was back when I was playing the drums as a pre-teen and thought the drumming on that song was just SICK and almost impossible to duplicate.  I love that song!

I just heard the original "My Liberty" on the radio led by a very young (probably 19 or 20 year old) Yolanda Adams.

**feeling left out**

What's "Another Chance"???  :-[ :-\ :( :'(

Oh wait... just as I was typing that, I thought of a possibility... are y'all talking about "I'm sorry, forgive me, clean me up, Jesus.  I didn't mean to hurt you, or desert you, cause I love you, sooooooooo much! I admit it, that I did it.  I didn't mean to let you down, please Jesus turn my life around and give me.... AAAAAAA-NUHHHHHH-THER CHANCE!"

????

And yeah, Joy was the bomb (and yeah, it's GA Mass).  A dear (deceased) friend of mine was one of the directors, and I know a bunch of folks who used to sing or direct with GA Mass... *sigh*

I can't seethe clips but since MM04 mentioned one of the titles, I can comment: MY SOUL HAS BEEN ANCHORED!!!!!!! Whewwww... That song still gets much play in my world. As a matter of fact, I just had a good ole Baptist fit off of that song a couple of weeks ago.

LaRue you hit the jackpot with this one.  I would put in some quotes but I'd have to quote the whole thread("Having you There" is prob. one of my all-time favorites).  Just beautiful LGM.  Many of these are on my playlist in YouTube.  The ones that aren't are being added.  I'll just list a couple of mine.

http://www.youtube.com/v/yqWULz3FvkE&hl=en&fs=1

I don't see how some of those men in the background can sit still like they were in the background.  It would be impossible for me to do that no matter what kind of suit I had on.

Still an uplifting song

COSIGN. Good times indeed.

This song still does something to me. The Southeast Inspirational Choir was ahead of their time, and they're one of the BEST and most underrated choirs in the history of music. Another thing about them is ANY one of their lead singers could have gone solo. They were just that good (Yolanda Adams being among them, of course). Here's Rise Joiner singing "Inspire Me." An awesome song, it epecially speaks to me as a musician. POWERFUL. BEAUTIFUL!!!  :'( :'(

Sistagurl, Thanks for reminding me of that song! Be Ye Stedfast. I never heard it back in the day, but a church that we often visit sings that song. I needed to hear that!! Awesome throwback.

Its Good To Know...Ya'll don't want to hear my daddy play that on the bass! Our church choir used to sing that also. Another good throwback!

One of the greatest albums I've ever heard:

Marvin Winans and The Perfected Praise Choir: Introducing Perfected Praise.

WHOOOOO!

What you talkin bout?  It is the bomb.  It seemed like one that fell through the cracks to me when it came out.  I hardly heard any of their stuff on the radio or being talked about until now.  It was and is one of my favorites all-time along with Indiana State Mass Choir, and one of Pastor Hez's albums from the 90's.  That sister Kayla Parker is the bomb!!!

Shout out to the late great J.C.  We still sing these songs when I go back to my Father-in-Law's Church.  If they call me up to lead praise/testimony service, these two may be among the songs sang with little modern twist on Can't nobody do me like Jesus.  We don't touch God has smiled on me.  It's sang basically the same as back then.

Dude, I've never been a "huge" Tina fan, only because I tend to prefer alto leads, but I have been on a Tina (and Milton Brunson/Tommies) kick all weekend long.  I literally stayed in my room ALLLLLLL day Saturday listening to MB & The Tommies, mostly the Tina or Kim songs.  That Tina is just a SopranoBEAST!!!!

And btw, grab a pen.  I need you to know this, Oh Young'un... The lady who leads "Oh Happy Day" is my play godmother, Mother Shirley Miller.  :)

You just posted #1 on my most wanted list.  This song along with "Having You There Made The Difference - Miss. Duuuuuuuude!!!!!!!!!!!!  Now THAT'S a flashback!!! That used to be my favorite song back in the day.  I still know the entire monologue by heart (or whatever you call that spoken part at the beginning...)  I love that lady's voice! The drama... Ooooh, I gotta find that!

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so
Whom the Lord hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy
Who was the enemy?
Death eternal
Ever falling into a bottomless pit of hell
But God's only Son said, "Father, prepare me a body.  I'll redeem man back to you."
So he took of his glory robe, put on human flesh
Bled, died, rose
Proclaiming victory over death!
Proclaiming victory over death, hell and the grave.
Now we have life.
Forever.
Redeemed.

Keith Pringle And The Pentecostal Community Choir - Help Me Lift Him Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIagHCkqsTw#) (our youth choir has sung this since they were formed in mid 90s but the song is much older). Guess what? Our youth choir is singing this song Sunday.

Such an awesome flashback... it's funny looking back at them, though. They are so extremely talented and back then, we just thought they were IT... but looking back at them, they were so corny. LOL. The outfits, the haircuts, the gestures, the little two-steps and whack lines. But hey, ain't nobody like Marvin Winans, so he gets a pass...

Teej has officially made my day. I'm sitting here crying like a nut!
I have been trying to find this one particular song. I looked through my dad's albums, my aunt's albums and all of their tapes. They have HUGE album collections. I could not remember the artist or the song title. All I knew was one line...."Make A Way" We had it on tape with the song Teej just posted.

I clicked on the video and went to youtube and THERE IT WAS as a suggestion. I used to listen to that song EV.VERY.DAY. Whew. *wiping tears*

I Luv the hype man in the blue suit. He brought a smile and warm memories of yesterday. "Yes Sir", "sang Deborah", "oh yeah".   The lost position of service in the body/choirs.  Seems like it has been picked up by the secular hip hop artists of these times.

Do you think a part of this is because more younger musicians and directors are in place? When I came up there were older people over choirs. Young musicians played but they weren't the main musician. I find many of the younger musicians and directors are more about being showy and also have less people skills.

I'd love for my church to mix it up at least.  Due to my preference, I often have to have church before church.  Why are choirs out style all of a sudden in some churches?

So Satisfied Video.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQz3HjJDp58#)

Originally recorded in 1989. Heard it was all over the radio when it first came out. I think a shorter version came out in the 90s. Our senior choir is doing the shorter version of this song tomorrow.

Can't see the clip at work.  This is Luther Barnes, correct?

I've bkeen looking FOREVER for song with a similar, if not same, title.  Here are some of the lyrics & I hope someone will help me in locating it:

Chorus:
I'm so satisfied
I'm so satisfied
With Christ my Savior
I'm so satisfied
Iiiiiiiiiiii'mmmmmmmm so saaa-a-a-aaaa-a-aaaaaaa-tisfiiiiiiiiied!! Oooooooooo-oooooooohhhh. (Harmony)

Verse?:
Troubles of this world seem to get me down.
But I give my life everyday to thee
And I will praise thee, O Lord, with all of my heart.
And I'll sing glory, glory forever more.
<growling riff/run>

I wanna say mid-late 70s or early 80s for a timeframe.

Anyone?!?!?

Oh goodness  ::)...I'm trying to get instructions from Elder on what the choir is about to do and she just kept going on about some music. I was like, will you please wait! I literally had to tune her out  :D. And the drummer was over there messing with the mics, so whatever I played, I had to play solo (way out of Order, IMO).

Nessa, you would've been cracking up! She was the perfect example of Mothers Gone Wild on DVD! LOL!!! She said "we thank God for our pastor... he's the husband of ONE wife. When we left here last night (Watch Night), nobody in here can say they drove past no strange woman's house and saw his car! He was at home with his ONE WIFE!!!!" (and that was just the beginning of that rant). I love her though. She's hilarious.
Title: Re: Flashback Friday!
Post by: LaylaMonroe on January 03, 2012, 03:03:19 PM
And you had to see her go off on Teej. You couldn't help but laugh (since he was clearly in the right and she was clearly wrong). It was just way too funny. See, the choir sings during offering, but they sit in the congregation. So they give first, then go to the choir stand and start singing. Then when offering is done, they go into whatever the main selection is. So Mother was on fire! She says all kind of wild, random stuff about giving, blesses the offering and then turns to TJ and gives him this "what the heck are you doing, don't you know it's offering time" look and says "Come on musicians, give us some marching music" with this disgusted frown on her face. :D :D :D
Title: Re: Flashback Friday!
Post by: LaylaMonroe on January 03, 2012, 03:03:30 PM
But TJ was trying to get the song from the choir director... he can't just start playing whatever, he has to play what the choir is about to sing. THAT. JOINT. WAS. SO. HILARIOUS!!!!! I mean EVERYBODY was laughing. Pastor, First Lady, the entire choir... EVERYBODY. LOL

But to be clear, she wasn't being mean... she's just... well, you know how some old people are just really blunt and have no idea that they are as funny (or annoying) as they are? That's Mother.

That's like my co-worker who told me today that "as much as I hate to admit it, I really do like Celine [Dion]'s version of River Deep, Mountain High better than Tina's" ::) >:( UGH!

I have Celine's on my iPod. Not Tina's.  :D

Jesus, the slowest. song. ever.  :-\
You know, it seems they were just generally slower during that era... we played "There is No Way" and we learned it from an old back in the day version, and goodness if it didn't seem ridiculously slow.

Same with "Changed" by Tremaine.

The microwave mindset that evades every aspect of culture today hadn't kicked into full gear at that time. That's back when they allowed the songs to "build".

Nah, I meant evades. Evade means to escape, so I was saying that it has escaped out of hell and taken over the minds of today's generation. And stuff.  :P

1. Definitely sleeping on Celine.

2. Agree with Nessa and Teej on how slow music was back then, and why.

I LOVVVVVVE the build-up of those old songs (and the few modern songs that have that same effect).

And btw, I expect you not to know any better because you're not old enough to appreciate good music. :D :P LOL!!!!!

Nah seriously, we tend to prefer the versions we hear first/most, in most cases. I expect your generation (or most of it) to prefer Celine's version. But honey please, Tina SLAUGHTERED that song!!! God almighty!!!!

I must admit the first time we practiced God Is during rehersal I was like man .... is this song over yet! but once I paid attention I was like yes yes he is

As such

i like my music cooked slow like some baby back ribs on the grill full of a heavy rhythmic flavor

It smells so you good you think you just ate a full course meal

And when you take a bite GLORY! the meat is just falling off the bone

I am by no way endorsing this book I just like the cover

.... i'm hungry

I've heard Tina's version plenty of times before Celine's. I just heard Celine's last year. Her version just sounded cleaner to me.

Were you at church that time we started singing it spontaneously after church? I think it was me, Pastor Ryan and Pastor Jackson? Or maybe some other guy... I think Warren sang a little too... I love the harmonies.
